  • In this video Kitesurfing for beginners, Where to position your hands on the bar we cover where to hold your hands when flying a kite. Of course, you can (and do) move your hands around while flying. As a beginner kiter, a lot of the mistakes made are accidentally steering a kite in the wrong place. This can often come from holding the bar out on the end, particularly with one hand. For that reason most of the time you are holding the bar it's a good idea to hold your hands close to the centre line.
Holding the bard close to the Center:
    More stable kite
    Less reactive kite
    Secure body posture
in General Kite keep your hands close to the centre of the bar to
    - Slow down turning speed and unintentional kite movements.
    - Enter and exit the water
    - Launching and landing
    - General riding
    Middle section of each side
    Active steering Water start
    changing direction
    One-handed.
Holding the bard close to the outside:
    More reactive kite
    More range of motion
    Unsteady body posture
    Outside of the bar
Aggressive steering (typically only in light wind)
    Loops
    CENTRE = STABLE | OUTSIDE = REACTIVE
Moving the kite around too much is ineffective. In fact, when learning it is common to oversteer the kite. the kite is great at flying and almost all the input it needs can be done with your hand close to the centre line. This will help your ride by stabilising the kite and making sure you don't have anything unexpected happen.
Often a mistake can happen when holding the bar to close to the ends (outside) and then becoming distracted by, picking up your board, waves, crashing and getting water in the face etc. This can lead to aggressive and unexpected power that can easily throw you onto the beach etc,. While it can take a bit longer to get the feel for flying the kite with your hands close to the centre line and it does tasks slightly more effort in your wrists to make the kite steer, I've always found that to be easy to overcome and the benefits of a reliable kite partially help you progress faster and with more confidence.

Great content as always. On extra what I always add to these for my students is "Don´t squeeze the bar." I try to teach them to hold it firmly with fingertips bent over the bar (preferably the thumb also) so they can feel the backlines better (the tension and the slack). When they learn this they immediately gain better control of the kite. Also when squeezing the bar you make it harder to steer the kite as your wrists are not "loose" anymore. Never thought of the triangle, you mentioned, in that way.

Great tips! When starting out (or even as an early intermediate rider) being conscientious like this about how you’re holding the bar can make a big difference in how the kite handles.

Brilliant as always. Never seen this explained properly and yet we position our hands 100% of the time we’re out riding! Just recalling launching in breaking waves this weekend and my kite hand was too far out and it nearly crashed back on the beach behind me.. saved in time! Getting hands right for the current activity is one of the most important areas to master. Being aware we can adjust to suit is a fantastic reminder, too; nice clear blue skies & sunshine so I’m heading out right now! :)
