    Referring to 0:57, you're the only reviewer who measured and analyzed sound quality compared to the original M50. Marques Brownlee and Jared Busch all did not do this, citing they were essentially the same. Well done!

    I just got the ATH-M40x and man i have to say, these are extremely netural. Even moreso than the original M50 or the new M50x. I really hope you can give the 40x a review. Cheers, love your site. I always refer to your measurements. I always felt the slightly broad peak in the midrange made these headphones sound a little bit metallic, and that the bass was a little too muddy. Otherwise they're great, but I think the 40x solves both of those issues, and amazingly costs less.

    • @kevinmorrice
      @kevinmorrice 5 років тому

      i agree, but i personaly prefer the m50x because they are a bit more suited for everyday listening, i feel the m40x are a bit to neutral for my ears, the m50x sorts the little issue i have wtih my ears

    • @blackstrobe69
      @blackstrobe69 3 роки тому

      @@kevinmorrice I feel the same about m50x, although i use Eq to get rid of that upper bass boom and to tame those highs. With proper eq i found them really exciting and fun. For example, k371 are really proper studio headphones, sound wise, out of the box. I use them just for production. They sound great but still, i fould EQed m50x a bit more fun for casual listening, with all flaws regarding sound stage and response out of the box.

      A *proffessional* ? That's quite an endorsement ;)
      Seriously, this isnt Tyll's first rodeo, and those of us who've been in the hobby for more than a few years can definitely relate when he says that high-end audio dealers didnt want to know about headphone amps in the early days of HeadRoom. Personal Audio might have given them a whole new potential market (under 50 and not exclusively male) but there are still some hardcases in that niche who roll their eyes at the mention of headphones. More power to Tyll for sticking it out all these years.

    - Sennheiser Momentum

    I bought the m 40 about two weeks ago and I'm returning them to Amazon Monday...they were heavy and totally understand comfortable to wear like having a big weight on my head and ears...the sound was ok but I didn't they were as great as many ppl said in some reviews...few days ago I took chance on a pair of STATUS HD ONE headphones that we're $$49. Last yr and Amazon had them for only $24!...I couldn't believe price and ordered them and they are perfect for me.. super lightweight and incredibly comfortable...sound quality was good to me to use on my phone and even on my TV...the first day I received these headphones I had them on that night for 6hrs and was never uncomfortable with then on...bottom line is that if I can get another color of these STATUS headphones I'm buying extra pair!

    Thanks for the great review, Tyll. The ATH M50 line is excellent. I have the M50, but very tempted to upgrade to the M50x for the better comfort in the ear cups and the more mobile device friendly 1.2m cable. But I think I will hold off on the upgrade. I have really grown to appreciate my M50's audio quality after having the chance to compare it to a $179 pair of Bose Soundtrue.
    Without a doubt, the ATH M50 is the better headphone and act the current price of $129, a better buy.

    Just goes to show how ears differ..respective of age, of course. But things being relative, I own 3 pair of 50's (no "x"), one being a year old. All 3 were broken in via my iTunes library of mixes, varying the volume. My new 50x pair the same.
    After 40 hours of break-in, plus another 40 hours of usage, I find the bass on the new phones...especially a low bump just below 100 hz to be nearly unlistenable. I'm monitoring through a UA Apollo8, BTW. I believe this (IMO) huge bass happening (versus my 50s) is one reason the AKG upper mid bump "seems" to be reversed...again all things relative. I asked my vendor to please check out the returned 50x pair to see if somehow they were mis-wired, as that bass was not just bigger proximity-wise, but seemed as if it was extending into the 400hz range, as if someone had inserted a faulty speaker crossover.

    Tyll, there's a rumour going around that Steve Guttenberg writes all your review videos and you are reading it from a teleprompter? I thought something was up when noticing you two guys share the same taste in shirts. It's good to hear that the M50 is still great with minor improvements, but when are you going to make review of something with meat on it? The Audeze LCD-X beckons me reckons...

    • @InnerFidelity
      @InnerFidelity  10 років тому +42

      Actually, I am Steve Guttenberg. Just have to much to say for one name to carry. In my Steve Guttenberg roll, I actually have shitty taste in shirts, but my wife helps me out. As Tyll Hertsens, I have to have good taste in shirts because I can't seem to hang on to a wife. It all balances out.
      Go read my Audiophiliac review of the LCD-X, mine here will be along shortly.

    I would still really like to hear Tyll's opinion of the Audio Technica ATH M40x's. They cost half the price of the M50x's (at least in Denmark), and some say they're close in sound to their big brother, if not better in some ways.

    It has also been stated that the M50x earpads are slightly different than the M50s. The M50x pads are supposedly more comfortable (with a little more cushion) than the M50s.
    I personally like to use 3rd party earpads since they are usually higher quality materials with considerably better comfort for a good price compared to the cost of the name brand earpads. I bought the Brainwavz velour earpads for my M50x for $19.50 on Amazon (amzn.com/B00PGMY2VK).

    What is your opinion on "Z Review"'s review on the m50x. I mean he hates them like no other headphone.
    I consider to buy one but I'm insecure.
    I'm looking for a closed back headphone, over ear, for on the go (it has to be transportable), listen to music.

      MrBlack661 I wouldn't take a review from one person. Look up reviews from elsewhere as well if you are still considering getting the m50x. They are fairly cheap. If you want to be on the safe side then consider getting the m40x.

      Patriots/Forza Fan Thank you very much for your reply. I already made a choice. I'm now a proud owner of the sony mdr 1a. I love sound because it delivers another "color" to the music. The Sennheiser HD 630VB for home entertainment with a pretty neutral sound, and the mdr 1a for on the go and a clean bass signature. Nethertheless I thank you for your answer.

    • @tempestjay7865
      @tempestjay7865 7 років тому

      MrBlack661 the Sony mdr1a is a wonderful choice. In fact I'm thinking about getting a pair of the them. Is it worth the price?

    • @MrBlack661
      @MrBlack661 7 років тому +1

      Patriots/Forza Fan From my point of you they are indeed a wonderful choice. They have almost no weight have a detachable cable and are incredible comfortable.
      The sound signature is unique. They are doing very well with rock, metal, anything with bass, but they can also play jazz and classic. So, they are not the most neutral sounding headphones. But don't think that they are bass boosted. the bass is clean and doesn't oppress the mids and highs. The base drum is punchy like hell. I couldn't believe it myself because isn't known fir good quality headphones. But these are worth the price. If you have further questions, don't hesitate to ask me.

    • @tempestjay7865

      I think they're what a solid $200 headphone should sound like. More than $200 and materials and design need to improve along with the sound.

      +InnerFidelity So for my music production I was thinking of getting these in replacement of the Sony MDR-7506's, mainly because I produce & listen to electronic music, and the Sony's bass end can be iffy at some times. I know the M50X's have a slightly amplified bass end, but is the treble/high treble range still crisp enough to hear & fine tune instruments in that range?

    So. My Tritton 720+ cable is about to break in about 2 months or so so I wanna be prepared for when they do break. I don't wanna get some kind of crappy "gaming" headset again but a headphone with a good sound quality.
    I like good bass in my headphones and i listen to a lot of Dubstep and Trap but I feel like the community is split into 2 groups here. Everybody say that the sound is very balanced but some say the bass is very good and others say there could have been a bit more.
    If anybody owning these headphone could give me an answer that would be great.

    Which one do you suggest for music listening ATH M50x or V-Moda M-100?
    If I have to pick only one headphone for music listening than which one is the close eye buy(among any headphone)?

      I've got both - some thoughts:
      The Vmoda has noticeably more bass, which is great for electronic music, and they're really well built. Lots of metal, they feel really sturdy. They fold up really small which is nice. I've stopped using them though, because they're uncomfortable on my very large head. The headband actually isn't large enough to fit me!
      I prefer the m50x. Despite what Tyll says, I don't think the plastic is strong enough - I've had to return mine once already because the hinge snapped! They sound great, definitely more balanced than the m100s, and a lot more comfortable on my head. I can wear them for hours!

    Would you recommend these or QC25 for studying??
    Thanks in advance

      I used QC 15 for college and they were excellent. The carrying case is great to prevent breakage in backpack. You can use QC without music just for cancellation which is great. M50X is great for clear music, but cancellation on QC series is downright magical. I think QC wins for studying.

    You have lot of experience, please solve my dilemma :'(
    I'd like to make sheets of famous modern songs for orchestrations with piano, violins, flutes and many many differents instruments from all styles and countries. So which headphones under 200$ is the best choice for me? I'd like to ear every single note and all parts of the music from flac files directly in the headphones without an amp to make sheets for a huge number of instruments. The source will be my smartphone. Please help :/

      Mukul Dulwani 50x is better if you're going to be listening to music. It has high highs, low lows, good bass, and a crisp sound. It adds fluff however, so if you're going to be wanting to know what your sound is actually like, go with the 40's

    Hey Tyll. You said you would review the m40x if was any good. Does this mean that its not so good?:) I think the reason so many people are asking about the m40x is because many people out there prefer them to the m50x. Did you get a change to listen to them?

      Do you like under a fucking rock bro?!?! Who the hell would choose an m40x over m50x? Its like saying you would like a Honda Civic over a Nissan GTR.
      Bottomline: Don't Bullshit bro.

      Renzo Raptor a lot of people would choose the m40x over the m50x. One such person is a UA-cam named Z Reviews.

  • @abasak007

    I love my m50x.. Granted it's the only good pair of headphones I own.. But they r great.. At my first listen I though da treble was a tad too sharp but after burn in it smoothed out.. It's fairly comfortable and very enjoyable listen.. I have seen Dat audiophile not pick a lot of things.. But most of Dem are negligible faults.. They r well built great sounding headphones.. Only problem I really have with these is Dat I can't wear Dem outside.. Coz I live in India and people stare a people who even wear on ear cans.. If u go out with dis huge studio monitors people do stare at me like I'm crazy or something.. My nest purchase will be senheiser momentum overears.. I hope I can use Dem outside. Without people staring at me..
