    Nan Dixon was my great great aunt, sister of my great grandfather Paul Leighton

      What does your family think about her disappearance? Or are they stumped, too? Sorry for the tragic loss of a family member.

    • @stevenleighton97

      I never met her, or my great grandfather or grandfather, but I know Nan's sons and grandchildren were really upset. One of her grandchildren has spent so much time and money investigating, but there are no new leads. I'm in contact with many Leighton relatives (Nan's maiden name was Leighton), and most seem to think it was Nan's nephew, Butch Leighton, son of her brother Harry. Butch was known for being friends with the sheriffs around there and most were corrupt. He had a store that was a front for the drug trade and they used to do air drops of some kind out in the desert (likely drugs). Butch was a bad man, as he had even sexually assaulted his female cousins and also was known for leaving my grandfather in the middle of the desert with a broken back. Butch was bad news, and we have long suspected he was involved.

      We think Nan saw something she wasn't supposed to see. It's really interesting how the car was auctioned off by the police, and Nan was not the kind of person who would take her own life.

      I'm truly sorry for the loss of your family member. Until she's found, people will keep looking. I used to live in Carson City, Nevada- I know that finding a person in the desert is going to require a miracle. I pray your family receives it.

    After watching these 3 video's it reminded me of when Mrs Dixon disappeared and I did a little research on my own to refresh my memory of the details of the case. I can't imagine the pain and the heartache her family especially her granddaughter must be feeling. I just wanted to let you know how amazing I think you are for all that you are doing to help her find her Gramma and the hope that you've given her just letting Mona know she's not alone in trying to bringing her home. Good work young man. Thank you.

      +Karen Foster Thank you Karen, we just got back from spending a week out hiking the entire canyon where Nan's vehicle was found and took a bunch of quad copter video footage of the entire area. We found some interesting things down further into the canyon, close to the end of the canyon. We are just getting started in our search and have started contacting everyone involved in the case to try and get as much info as possible to help bring Nan home to her family. If you have any info you can share, I would be most grateful. We appreciate your kind comments and support. Thank you. :-)

      Explore With Us I'll look forward to seeing the footage if you decide to share. I think I remembered Mrs. Dixons disappearance so well was because she reminded me so much of my own mother not only in appearance but in her spunky and independent spirit as well setting out on her own as she did into an area that she was unfamiliar with to collect a debt that was owed to her, armed with only determination and a gun something that my own mom would do and it only made me worry more for her each time she set out on one of her adventures. Because as in this case it was a reminder of the dangers that are out there. I wish I did have info or suggestions on how to bring this sweet lady home. If you can think of anything that I might be able to do to help whether it be research or even helping with search efforts please let me know, I live in Utah and am semi retired and would be happy to do whatever I can to help to give this family some closure to this heartbreaking case. Again thank you for restoring my faith in the human spirit and my fellow man and that there are people out there that do care and can and will help others.

    Thank You for such prompt response and additional information from Steven John Leighton concerning the family's ideas of what might have happened to Nan. I wonder how Butch Dixon met his demise. He sounds as if he was or rather might have been a contributing factor to Nan's disappearance. Interesting info about her car and the disposition of it. Today it hopefully would be more carefully examined. I really enjoy seeing this as I will never be able to see any of this. Thank you so very much!

    That's an empty film pack, based on the date it's most likely a Time Zero/SX-70 Polaroid camera pack; the time frame is a little early for the 600 series cameras and film to have come out, even though the film packs look identical. The crime scene investigators might have used cameras like that but a lot of them were using the Polaroid peel-apart film cameras (with Type 108 film) back then, so it's impossible to determine that with any certainty.

    • @ExploreWithUs
      @ExploreWithUs  8 років тому +1

      +CamSayCam The cassette tape was originally a blank, so I am going to transfer the tape into a new cassette case and see what was recorded on it. I did see it has the tape still in it, so with a new case and a little cleaning up, I should be able to hear what is on it. I will have to make a video when I transfer it over and listen to it the first time. Very strange place to find a cassette tape. I believe it must have belonged to Nan.

    The car was driven there to hide it but wasn't burnt out, which might draw attention to it in the daylight. It still seems a little odd especially as it was found 4 years after her disappearance. It's not made clear how long it had been there and the area had already been searched so she obviously didn't leave it there. That means that all the conjecture surrounding her proximity to the car is pointless because she couldn't have driven it there.
    For all you/we know she could have reached her destination and was on her way home with the money, when she was "disappeared" so could realistically be anywhere. If the brothers and/or nephews were under suspicion the best thing they could do was deny she ever arrived. The car not appearing again for 4 years however is very odd. It's not that easy to hide a car for that length of time and the logical thing would have been to destroy it to hide the evidence.

    • @ExploreWithUs
      @ExploreWithUs  8 років тому +8

      There is a road to get to the top of the valley, but down into the valley the road no longer exists. It wasn't until I got there and seen it for myself that I realize how easily that car could have been missed in the search. It was searched by air, but they would have had to fly exactly over that area to see it, and it would have easily been missed.

    • @jessabbott7830
      @jessabbott7830 7 років тому +6

      I think it was her brother or he somehow was involved. Because she went to collect her money her brother owed her and she followed a handmade map..how do we not know this map led her to ambush and she was murdered.. I find it hard to believe her car was in that spot for 4 years because when they found it, the tire tracks driven off the road were still there. Why would she drive off the road? why would a 70 something year old lady leave her car and carry her possessions over rugged land..too strenuous I would think. the note found in the car makes no sense and then you have the possible blood in the back. what if someone ambushed her and murdered her and put her in the back and then drive to hide the car until people stopped looking for her. Nothing adds up and for days I've been brainstorming this case.

    Some petty cool places out in the middle of nowhere, glad you document and share this with us all! Can't stress it enough that it's easy to be stranded and lost out where nearly no one will find you, so as you said pack a lot of supplies, and you should bring firearms, you can find strange people and beasts out there. I wouldn't go out to any of these places without a hand gun and maybe a rifle at least. I may be paranoid but you also should consider they can help you survive by having tools to start fires, hut for food, and signal people if you are inventive. Judging by the places you guys go and explore I assume you are packing and I truly hope so, would be unfortunate for you to stumble acrossed some unstable person in the middle of nowhere and not be heard from again.

    At 3:32 the camera is aimed at the floor looking at the small animal bones and I'm trying to figure out if that round white object with three holes where one might expect eyes and a nose to be is just a rock with owl droppings on it, or it kind of looks like a skull...Great video series. I just don't understand some things I'm assuming her car was stuck? She had some gas to keep warm at night. If she stayed for any length of time in her car wouldn't there be evidence of that? I'd be pulling clothes out of my suitcase for warmth or discarded pop bottles or rolled clothing for a pillow. If she had gas for warmth she could have just left so I'm assuming her cars stuck. After a few hours of sitting there wouldn't she be trying to push some rocks or some clothing, anything that might help give traction, under the stuck tire? Try to push some of the sand away? That would be easier then carrying a suitcase thru that environment. Even after four years that evidence of a stuck tire would still exist. If she spent time in the car because it was a familiar safe place with the only shade that would have been evident. If the car was in the deserts hot sun for four years wouldn't the paint on the car show this? Would rodents have moved in? Even they want to get out of the sun. Did the car have spider webs on it? The police took pictures and must have investigated the findings. Local papers must have pictures and sometimes graphic articles back then. But say okay....she spent as much time as she could in the car and knew help wasn't coming and she had to leave. She's carrying her suitcase, purse. A twenty year old would be puffing to get up those hills and this 73 year old had added weight of what she's taking with her with a lot less muscle mass. No way. Shed be hard pressed on a flat away. After a short distance shed have to abandon her things and maybe carry extra clothing for warmth. If she spent any time at her car before leaving any liquid she had would have pretty well been depleted. She needs to leave her safe haven to save her life. So she starts walking? How fast or far do you think a 73 year old, in a desert, with high temperatures, a suitcase and a purse with limited liquids can go? If this is what Nan did then she's in close proximity of where the car was. And without a doubt the suitcase is. I wish there was pics of the car cuz wouldn't the desert ruin the paint? But if someone had to hide that car in a garage so it wouldn't be found the paint would be better and interior not faded. Also if the car was stuck you could probably still see evidence today where it got stuck at. I'm getting up in age and I would put rocks under my tires or try jacking my tire up to slide something under or put some old pants under the tire, anything, cuz its better then walking away into a desert. I'd like to know the inventory of her found car and what kind of shape it was in when found. Was the battery dead was the gas old were the mirrors turned was clothing in the car any rodents fingerprints spiderwebs were the seats pushed back. So many questions. And if her car wasn't stuck...most, I would have hung around ten minutes and left for a phone to call brother.

I call bullshit. you know Dahmer and Ted bundy were well loved and giving to. why did your idiot grandfather make her come out there for money he owed HER? The ass hole should have taken it to her if she needed it so bad. my guess is there was no way in HELL he had six grand to pay her back so he buried her ass out there somewhere.

    something about the stacked rocks in the mine on the left hand side just before the tunnel to the left grabbed my attention. if only it were possible to get a round about idea of when they were stacked there. that would be a great way to ensure someone wasnt found because it "blends in" with its environment.

      They are not sure as there are more people still missing along highway 80 in the area who went missing under mysterious circumstances. They police have one speculated on the possibility of a serial killer as many people went missing and have never been found in the area. Thank you for watching.

    Enjoying your video. A question for you...At time marker 7:04, when you were in the mine I noticed that the stones by the left side of the cave near the fallen rock seemed to be very neatly stacked in rows. It struck me as odd that the rocks would be SO neatly "arranged." Did you think anything of that? or is it commonplace to stack or arrange fallen rock so it would be stable? (or maybe cover someone up so they would not be noticed?) Just wondering. You have my full attention and hoping you find additional info on this tragic story. Thank you.

WHY on EARTH would an older woman go traipsing around unprepared in that area?Theres nothing of interest for her there.My uneducated guess is that she wouldn't! finding that Polaroid film was so strange! Great job!

    • @ExploreWithUs
      @ExploreWithUs  8 років тому +2

      +Candy Santillo Yeah, I went in alone as it seemed too unstable to allow others to go in. I think the most dangerous part was the opening of the mine. I should have gone over the dirt to make sure it didn't continue. Next time I am in the area I will see what is further back. I agree, I don't see her going in that area deliberately either. Seems more likely she was murdered and her vehicle was stashed in the area. Thank you for watching.

    Those videos you did with the drone are what made me think it is possible to look for Nan with street view. It looks like someone, between 2008-2009, (i am not sure of that date), has either by horse back, or when the ground was wet, been going up and down all the turn offs on 399. There are tracks everywhere. Was that you? Just curious. I have been going foot by foot down 399, when I have time. May be a waste of time, idk.

    Loved this whole series, it was fascinating. I really do hope that the mystery of Nans disappearance will be cleared up in the end. That looks like a perfect place to 'hide' a car. I believe someone knew that area well and decided that the best place to hide a car would be down in that little low spot. As you panned the camera from where the car was found, there is low visibility. It was out of sight from afar. This spot is far also enough away from the house that she was supposed to be heading to, that this would have created an illusion of separation - the car being far enough from the house to avoid suspicion. But it's not so far from the house that someone would have to be explaining 'where they went' during the time they ditched that car and made it back home. The sight of the car was staged - or - someone actually spent time there waiting for someone to pick them up and bring them home. Stuff was strewn about the car to try and be a diversion for anyone who might want to investigate once the car was located. Also, even though 'she walked everyday', I don't think an elderly person would have been able to get very far from that car, especially if they'd spent so much time there - given the steeper slopes around it. I think she should have been found as she likely couldn't have gone far enough. My imaginative mind could speculate all these things... but I'm having a hard time ignoring those coincidences. She met with fowl play somewhere else and the car was ditched way over here. Very sad to think about this. I wish all the family wellness and healing.

    Just throwing this out there: Interstate 80 shall go down as the number one interstate in America that can possibly be connected to multiple murders. If you want hauntings, travel I-80 in Utah, Northern Nevada and parts of Northern California. For many years the unusual concentration of found bodies, abandoned cars, and the like have been found. Thus, adding all the murders and disappearances it is highly likely Dixon might have been subject to this. Many authorities believe there have been multiple serial killers based at I-80. I suggest looking into it. Also, what happened to Dixon lines up with what happened to others.
