The Cybergoth dance party is a popular dance video uploaded to UA-cam in 2011. It features a handful of young Germans dressd in eccentric clothing, industrial dancing to a popular house track. The original uploader of this video only expected his fellow cybergoth friends to watch it, but it went viral. Ever since, the video has been flooded with comments mocking and joking on the group and the video itself has become a meme. Today I tell you the story behind this video, cybergoth culture, and how the internet reacted to it.

It's so hard to believe a movement we were part of in the early 80's is still alive and kicking - I'm 63 now and I laugh when my grandkids tell everyone about how cool their "goth granny" is and drag out my photo albums - The Cure, Sisters of Mercy and Type O Negative can still be heard blaring from my house - keep it up kids, it's awesome!

This isn't part of the British "goth" genre, or even a sub-genre. No one in the early 80s called it goth anyway. This is a weird, uncool German scene with shite music and even worse fashion.

this just warms my Cybergoth heart man. thank you!
It's cool as hell.
Sci-fi motifs have been popular for decades, and often run alongside alternative (gothic, rave, nerd, gaming, etc.) subcultures and interests. Just makes sense that they would merge.
I think people (usually younger, we've all been there) tend to be more territorial about subcultures they feel at home in. That being said, cybergoth makes sense to me lol.
I always thought the Cybergoth style was kind of cool. Dark against extremely bright colors works insanely well. If I had more confidence and stuff years ago (and probably even today), I'd likely go to a meetup and give it a try.

Before they became cybergoths i guarantee you they were lonely kids just looking for friends and a sense of community. So yeah, they're not being themselves if we're being honest here. But that's okay, they can do whatever they want.
Silly cybergoths, it was a trap to make you expose yourself. Definitely don't be yourself.

If history has taught me anything, it's that something deemed as cringey and uncool will one day come back as a huge fad with a younger generation. I look forward to suddenly seeing the cybergoth look rising from the grave.
If it's tied to music, (as all goth subculture is) then it can't be a fad unless the music dissapears from existence. If someone dresses like a cybergoth but doesn't listen to any of the music, they're a poseur and a fake goth.
True and with hyper pop/ rage music on the rise I think it will be soon
I saw that bucket hats... the worst fashion of the late 90s early 2000s are back. If those are back, anything can come back. Anything.
Anything comes back, hell crocs were seen as trendy last year! Currently I think emo/scene are making a comeback. Idk I'm just part of the sub cultute so maybe it's that
I'm friends with a huge crowd of cybergoths from the early 2000s. most of them are more toned-down versions of how they used to dress and party but still go to the goth club to hang, just in a more subdued way. I think a new generation of modern cybergoth babies will rise up soon.

@Bunker Sieben you got to have that mindset or you could not deal with the hostility you get. I never was a goth or so, but growing up in a pretty conservative area my friends and me also were kind of outsiders compared to the rest and we also thought that the lame ones are the mainstream folks.
Cybergoth are truly trash
I’m “trad” goth but I always liked the cybergoth vibe. Goths who hate on it are just bitter lol
@@Ebrill_Owen When I was younger I was a traditional goth but I always thought Cyber goths looked post cool. I wasn't into their music though.
This idea that goths are bullied for being goth is very peculiar since it seems to be contemporaneous with internet culture and culture outside of the influence of major cities (no goths used to develop in places without goth scenes before the web).
Damn, these guys were the outcasts amongst the outcasts and they still stayed true to what they were into, gotta give respect to that.
Man I didn't realize I use that bridge almost everyday driving to work when driving from Duisburg Marxloh to Bonn Tannenbusch until you mentioned it's in Düsseldorf... thank you very much for that, ill check it out on Tuesday, don't wanna be late on Monday...
What has me vastly amused is that almost every type of music has been used with this clip...and almost every type of music still fits!
A girl in my art class at college happened to be a cybergoth. I was terrified of her when I first met her as I never understood her extreme image, but after spending time with her and getting to know her, she was an incredibly kind human being. She took me to her house (she lived with her parents at the time) and I saw her bedroom. It was entirely black with splashes of intense colour. Her parents were lovely...they had no gothic tendencies and said they just let their daughter find her happiness.
We lost touch after college. I often wonder how life panned out for her. She was a great girl. Once I'd gotten to know her, I felt like I had a view from inside her world and it was one that was pretty much full of happiness and love. I never judged anyone different/unique ever again.
i hope she’s living her best life fr
Do you where her parents house is you tell them where she is now
They sound like a wonderful family!
thats awesome, more parents should just let their kids do what makes em happy (within reason of course)
That's awesome I hope you find her again a good friendship is the best friendship and kindness goes a long ways :)
It always bothered me how many people from subcultures love to gatekeep and oust members of a slightly different subculture. "I hate that everyone is the same, but you're too different from us."
hello david. btw wobba wobba
I found that, depending on where you are, these communities are either accepted wholly or rejected outright. Example; in Tucson (at least the club I went to), unless you creeped on people or were an incredible jerk, you were accepted immediately, whereas in Vegas they wouldn’t even acknowledge outsiders.
Honestly it makes sense. Bring too many in too fast it becomes toxic and gatekeeps anyway. To prevent you gatekeep and keep it traditional in liking this thing.
I find it weird as I used to be kinda on the scene in the UK and never saw any of that. In fact in the latter part of the 00's I was a photographer & DJ for a number of alt. nights and clubs in the South West (UK) and never saw anything akin to bullying through the different scenes, we just hung out together, weather it was at a rock night, goth event, EBM clubnight or just a house party. Hell even some of the festivals are still going (Infest, Resistanz etc) and their tickets sell out pretty quick. To say it's a dying subculture though is probably true as it's not getting younger people involved (mine was probably the last and even I've moved on since), but hey it's still a fun subculture with some awesome music. :)
You must earn your place

Turn all the lights on in a club and change the music to thomas the tank engine and these "regular people" will look just as stupid, maybe more-so since they would also be likely very drunk lol also their clothes are fine. Not my cup of tea personally but who cares if they enjoy dressing like that? Certainly not me.
@@TomGallagherSuperboyBeyond don't delude youself into thinking the internet doesn't mock normies too.
I can really relate with anonymous internet user
Bring this back for a moment 😭
I'VE BEEN WONDERING ABOUT THIS FOR A DECADE
With how accepting the "emo" and "scene" community was, its kinda tragic that this was the fate of the cyber goth. It kinda brings me back to the rave episode of Samurai Jack. I wanna see a documentary of goth trends and the sub sects that it spawned. That'd be interesting
That documentary idea is cool
spicy straight facts
Let's hope that we can see them at Night City come September
@Rodney Gore the emo kids you probably thought of back in the day was exactly "emo," it was just kids playing press up to what others thought emo was based off what mtv presented. Then what came later was scene with brokencyde (or whatever they are called lol). I know about a bunch of the super early emo shit as I dated someone that was right into it. She was probably the most down to earth person I met as she was more open to emotional situations. We broke up because her parents were super religious and against dating. Lol
@@Red1676 i remember brokencyde!
Goths: We embrace society’s outcasts.
Also goths: No, not that kind of outcast.
tbh, I've never witnessed fellow goths bulling cybergoths.
@@DmitryFromForest Yeah I agree, I also thought the commentary in the video seemed a bit stereotypical. I am sure some of them did, but over all most Goths I know don't go around and judging other subcultures everywhere. But there are always some bad apples ofcourse.
To be fair, most cybergoths that I met during the early 2000s have been dicks. They felt they are better than us "normal" goths and always acted like 1st class people.
But maybe it was just a local phenomenon and the cybers in my area have just been the foul bunch.
@@King_Firebrand That's quite possible... You kind of have that type of issue in every type of musical genre or sub genre as far as I am aware :P
@@Yourebeautyfull that's true.
I always think of bullies on internet are the people who was bullied irl and internet is one way to vent that anger
Your background is bad ass. PS- my friend lives near this bridge and said she’s seen them a bunch of times.
Do they still have under bridge raves 🥺
4:35 he is CLEARLY doing the macarena.
*macadamia
Fun fact i was there when the clip was made and knew most of the people u see in it but we sadly löst toch over the years. We would meet unser that brige ever saturday and just have a great time. There were people of different scenes like some goth, Punks, the cybers, hip hop and so on just chilling together. It was a wonderful time whit a not of awesome folks. Everytime i see this Video i get a big Smile and a bit nostalgic. Never thought at the time it woud become such a meme.
Ich vermiss euch leute
Tracer106 Stop lying, no one cares anyway
its not a meme. its a joke and you guys where the laughingstock. its nothing tobe proud of it.
hey man, what a great thing to hear, you're a part of history!! screw the haters, for real. can you tell more about the people pictured in the clip, if you're visible, or what each personality was like (such as white shirt boy, glasses guy, or fishnet sleeves girl?)
@@erikthomas6046 sure thing mate. The guy in white was one of those always full of energy-people. First time i got to the Meeting he greeted me whith a big smile and was like "you don't look like you'll fit in but thats why u fit in perfectly". Was a gerat guy. The Girl with the green extentions was a much more scilent type till she got to know someone but she got more chill After talking for some time. I admit that i had a lil crush on her for some time but that was a long time ago and never lead to anything so we just became friends After a while. I sadly dont remember much about the girl with the fishnet sleevs exept that she called herself zuki no tesch or something along those lines. Never talked that much to her but she seemd nice enogh. The guys whith the coats wayn the back where my folks, shizo and jackell they called themself. Shizo the guy whith coat and hat ,head a fucking sick sense of humor im mean really fucked up it was helarious to see people just stare dead back at him when he droped a bomb but i admiert his don't give a fuck Attitude. Jackell or Jack didnt talk much always just nodding or shaking his head. I thought he was mute for the first two weeks. All of the folks there head a screw or two lose tbh but they gifted me whith a wonderfull time and keppt me away from fucking up my youth to bad.
let these asshole say what they want. They’re behind a screen anyway.
I was always just so impressed how they got so many people together and had a good time.. I was of course a baby emo when I first saw it xD
Dude! They had a reunion and made a new video!
Link plz ❤
I want a 'reunion" video where all these cybergoths get back together, under the same bridge, 10, 20, 30 years later!
Fuck that. I want one 50-70 years later. Just a bunch of elderly cybergoths with oxygen tanks, walkers, in wheelchairs, etc., all trying to do the same type of dancing they did back then.
Allegedly they’re back and on TT under “boss man”
I heard some where that after one of their toxic friends outed them they got bullied so bad that they eventually ended their life. I don't know if it's true but still so sad
Half of them overdosed on krokodil
@@ZebbMassiv oof

This is one of my favorite videos.
I was just wondering why they were all gathered there and of course you have a vid on it. God bless
"A dance party that took place under a bridge"
As a former goth kid from back in the day, that sentence just warms my heart. Which bridge? Just a bridge. Why? Because goth.
I felt that. Cause it's under a bridge, yeah.
@Joe The king of Africa Because there are vehicles on the bridge. They didn't want to cause a traffic jam.
That's the best place to shoot heroin.
@Joe The king of Africa It's out of the sight of surveillance and anyone can join in. Much like when they throw a party at abandoned warehouses.
The dirtier the better
To be fair, that one kid was doing the Macarena.
As was one of the medical droids during the opening sequence in System Shock 2. Which is *obviously* what the dancer was referencing, and I appreciate that... XD
Came to the comments to see if anyone was going to mention that. I wonder if it was intentional, or if he just subconsciously started doing it and couldn't break the routine.
@@Phreekful The Macarena, once instigated... 😣
