  • Timor-Leste is a small nation of just 1.3 million people. In its territorial waters lies an untapped gas field worth billions of dollars that bigger countries like China and Australia have their eye on. Recently, Timor-Leste signed four economic deals with Beijing, a move that worries Canberra. A tough choice for Timor-Leste? How has the country progressed since its independence just 20 years ago? And will joining ASEAN really benefit their population? Their President, José Ramos-Horta, tells Lin Xue Ling in In Conversation.

as Indonesian, I don't understand why they didn't join Oceania and choose ASEAN instead. isn't they are the one who curse or hate ASEAN being backward countries or so during their independence ?
they also said that they want to become like Singapore getting their independence from Malaysia but for Oceania.

They just want money from ASEAN development fund. But, they didn't bring anything to the table. No natural resources, no strategic location, no trade routes, no nothing. So why would ASEAN accept TL? From the beginning, they smugly thinking more like Oceania allies with Australia and others. Ramos horta himself is corrupt just like others. Now they got ignored by Australia and got nowhere to beg.

@@SABONGPhilippines07 What is this phobia, its christians killing christians. You do know the supporter for timorese integration were catholics in Indonesia (the catholic church, especially its influential member pater beek), even more so Soeharto regime which are supported by catholics as they were the most anti-communists. Like sofyan wanamdi student groups that help in toppling Soekarno. Protestant christian were more supporter of Soekarno, or muslim groups which are oppressed under Soeharto.
Benny moerdani, Maraden panggabean, Dading Kalbuadi all important generals were christian (mostly catholic). Not to mention golkar political party were graduates of Kanisius school, Santamaria network of Pater beek. Soldiers were most often local according to military district, catholics from West Timor. The reasoning of why catholics and the church and even rightwing East Timorese supported Indonesia was so they don't fall to the left wing communist FRETILIN which put timor leste under civil war. As I said Pater Beek was an extreme anti-communist as most catholics in Indonesia were.

As an Indonesian, I just wish this will truly work out. But to put it bluntly, I'm not very confident about this. I can just imagine how dissatisfied Singapore rn.
All I can say to the East Timorese is, your country better actually develops quickly in five years, develop enough to actually bring something to table, it's for your own good. If things didn't get better internationally and a war broke out (as people already danced around this Fcken topic for a while now), East Timor won't be able to use China as a threat and leverage on other ASEAN countries. I'm afraid if push comes to shove, while a war was raging outside and you guys still didn't have anything meaningful to offer, Indonesia might just take you back under its reign. Think again, if a war really broke out in a worldwide scale, no one would care enough about a small country getting annexed back. At that time, no China could be used to threaten ASEAN.
This is a hard time. A storm is brewing under the surface. We never know when will NATO would suddenly declare war and make it a worldwide problem. We never know it. This isn't a threat. I sincerely wish for East Timor to actually improve and get out of poverty after your wealth was stolen by Australia, it hurt seeing East Timor got betrayed like that for me. But seeing it from a larger perspective. ASEAN being forced to take ET in just because of China makes it kinda uncomfortable.
Improve. Improve. Improve. Become better. I don't really want to see when we have to choose to hurt a brother or to be vulnerable. If possible, look for the right leaders to actually build your country at this moment.

Timor Leste has a poor score in the HDI, coming in at position 133 (0.436). indicates how poorly developed the country is.
The unemployment rate is 20%, and 52.9% of people live on less than $1.25 USD a day.
Literacy rates in Timor Leste are at 50%. In the entire world, Timor Leste has one of the lowest rates of urbanization (27%).

Ramos Horta is too ambitious to join ASEAN. He used china as a bargaining card to threaten ASEAN countries to accept Timor Leste to join ASEAN as soon as possible. It seems ASEAN feel threatened and be intimidated by Ramos Horta statement . So there is no way for ASEAN to do, they must act and accept Timor Leste to be a member of ASEAN even some criteria which was set up by ASEAN is not yet fulfilled by Timor Leste.
    My questions are:
    1) is it Timor Leste economy getting better if joining ASEAN?
    2) is ASEAN ready to take moral responsibility in term of economy and financial to help Timor Leste if Timor Leste economy collapsed? As We know together that Timor Leste economy is heavily relying on oil and gas industry. No other revenue Timor Leste can make except selling oil and gas. The problem is in 2025 to 2030 the major developed countries in Europe, America and Asia will not buy and use oil and gas anymore to run their industry, transportation etc . They will rely on renewable energy like sun, battery , Hydrogen fuel, wind turbine and water . Where will Timor Leste sell its oil and gas meanwhile those industrial countries no longer buy oil and gas ?
    3) is Timor Leste ready to leave US Dollar and accept ASEAN policy if ASEAN choose to use single currency as their formal transection in the future ?
    4) Is Timor Leste ready to leave or scrap its official language from its constitution (Tetun and Portuguese) if Asean choose Melayu as their official language? Because this issue has been echoed by Malaysia and Indonesia so far .
    5) is it Asean countries willing to invest in Timor Leste and accept all risks and consequences in the future if their investment is failed. As we know together that Timor Leste infrastructure like airport , Electricity and telecommunications are the worst in the world . Electric goes off more often for hour and hour .Telecommunication or internet is running very slow and too expensive. International airport Nicolau Lobato in Dili is very small and can't accommodate big planes . New port in Dili is very expensive in term of tax collection. If a company establishes its factory there they will face four obstacles.
    1) power (electricity)
    2) internet
    3) Marketing and
    4) taxation.

Taking Taiwan will start world war with China, what kind of business is that? Seeing your history comments talking China building military bases in East Timor or Singapore building military bases, you have no clue what you're talking about business, economy, nation welfare

As a 90s kids Indonesian, I support Timor Leste joining ASEAN. Our past is intertwined, let us align our futures too. Hopefully, we can move forward together and bury the pains of the past. Let the water flow under the bridge. ASEAN’s policy of non-intervention should be upheld, lest we disintegrate.

@@starfromakihabara4896 I don't mind with that base. In fact i would be so happy to see it built on TL since it would gave two messages to the world. First of all is about how weak TL is and the second message is china has make Indonesia drifting back to the US military sphere.

As Indonesian, the country that always get called as "invader" from timor leste, I always support timor leste to become one of the newest member of ASEAN
I hope all ASEAN member will glad to accept timor leste as their family and start our cooporation and collaboration to develop a stronger and advanced south east asia region
I hope ASEAN emerging countries can build security and development circle that will boost every member of ASEAN
I also wait for cultural exchange from timor leste that will add more diversity and unity in ASEAN
