      Regulator:
      For example, if the input is 12V and you are using 7805 regulator, it will give 5v but the remaining 7v is simply wasted here. The reason for the regulator is heating also the same. it is almost grounding 7v.
      Buck converter:
      When you reduce the 12 v into 5v using a buck converter the power is almost maintained here. It is not wasting the power as in the regulator.
      So regulator is suitable when you have unlimited power. Buck converter is suitable when you have limited power(eg: solar, battery)

      There is a calculation to find the values depends on frequency, input current, output current, expected voltage, etc.,,
      We can't tell directly.

      If you go for a buck converter then you have to be ready to spend ten times of what you have paid for a regulator.

      @@prakashtamilan9864 For a rechargable battery the charging voltage should be given on the body of the battery. Typically the charging voltage will be 13 to 13.5 for 12v battery.
