Yellowstone Wolves rally after chasing coyotes

Members of the Junction Butte pack of wolves had been feeding on a bison carcass and then, most likely, went and bedded down not far away. Coyotes came in to feed and, not long after, the wolves chased them off the carcass and then had a brief rally as they returned to the carcass.

All wolves in Yellowstone are Canis Lupis or "grey wolves". But some are all white, chocolate brown and black. I asked a wolf expert, Rick McIntyre, about why the grey wolves that blend in better to the landscape aren't more dominate in color. He said that the black wolves have a gene that gives them resistance to some diseases common to dogs and wolves. So even tho they don't have the camouflage that the true grey colored wolves have they do have other advantages. Most of the "grey wolves" in Yellowstone are black in color.

Forgot where I learn this from but I remember learning that the color black on wolves actually originate from breeding with stray dogs or coyotes. I could be wrong. Thanks for the information!

Awesome footage ! Do you know who is the collared wolf ? My guess is 1229F. Subordinate 996M is black as well as 1109F, beta 1048M & alpha 1047M.

996 is 1048's brother and they and 1047 are older wolves, even though none get to be old in the park. Lifespan is only an average of 5 years. 1109 was not hanging out with the pack at the time of this video. It is a yearling, so 1229 is a good guess.
