Thank you - it’s nearly 2 years since we got the keys and we absolutely love it. We still feel like we are coming home to a little holiday cottage in the Dales whenever we travel which is a fantastic feeling 😊
Hello Richard and Jackie. I stumbled across your channel yesterday and much like another comment my wife and I have spent a few hours catching up. We are 51 and 53, we are both looking to retire around 60 but fair play to you guys retiring early. We see a lot of tragedy in our jobs and will have good pensions after 55yrs having worked in the police. My wife is a double dipper having retired and gone back as a civilian. We often say it’s not all about the money…but currently needs must. Your channel is inspirational to our age bracket. We also have renovated our 1960s bungalow in Sidmouth Devon in the past year and can concur with the upheaval having lived in it! Yours looks super cosy. Keep up the good videos.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment. We have realised over the past 18 months that there are so many people in a similar situation to us and it is interesting hearing their stories. I can only imagine some of the stresses you have and see being in the police, it was hard enough seeing some of the social situations the children came from in our schools! We just keep going with the mantra that we are now rich in time and will have enough money to get by.
Hi Richard and Jackie. Only just discovered your channel and spent my Saturday evening watching a few of your old episodes whilst other half was out and I had control of the remote 😊! This morning I get up and enjoyed my morning cuppa (tea for me!) watching your new episode! We're similar to you - 50 something retirees with a VW Camper. Just haven’t relocated yet! Spent years renovating our family home so feel very attached to it…but the dream in Devon/Cornwall for us. You’re a great couple and your new home is amazing. You’ve done an amazing job renovating it..and learning new skills along the way too! Lifelong learners! 😊 Enjoying life is what it's all about! Thank you for sharing your journey! Jood 😊
Thank you. We absolutely love the cottage, it feels like coming home to a holiday cottage when we get back from our longer trips. Our grown up children love coming and working from here while we are away which is lovely that they feel so at home!
❤ You two have renovated your Cozy Cottage Beautifully ! I love the open concept of the Living room and Kitchen area... I live in a small house as well 😊
Thank you 😊 We absolutely love the cottage - it still feels like we are coming home to a holiday cottage after our van travels, it is small but has everything we need
A heart warming update, thanks. The cottage looks great. We love the Dales too and have just returned from a week in Muker, which is our favourite village. I may be mistaken, but it looks like Richards shirt is the same material as the curtains! Nice coordination.
Thank you ☺️ we were up in Muker yesterday! We wanted to stay at the Tan hill inn but they were having work done and not having stopovers for a couple of nights. Rich likes to melt into the background sometimes 🤣
Morning, This was a great recap of the earlier videos. I must say your production and story telling is coming on leaps and bounds. That life long learning is paying off.
We are still declutterring a year later 🤣 we have stuff in a small lock up that we haven’t touched. So a new years job is to have another round of sorting!
Hi Richard & Jackie, As time has gone on how have you found the electric heaters you have? Have they been economical and where did you get them from? Thanks love your channel 🙂
Thanks for this Gill- great question, but not an easy one to answer outright. The main issue is long term viability as we have not spent a full winter in the Dales (and don't intend to with our love of skiing and winter adventures), so we cannot really give you a true cost of running them every day. They are really good and heat the spaces up very quickly when we use them. They compliment our wood burner and we tend to use them in the morning when we don't want to set the fire. We rarely have them on for more than an hour or so, and this doesn't cost too much. They are meeting our needs at the moment, and were a very cost effective system to install as we only have electricity in the house. In the long term, we cannot yet really say how cost effective they will be. Watch this space. Thanks for the comment👍
The Yorkshire Dales is a fantastic place to live - although I’ve just done a 2 week house and dog sit on Anglesey and I could easily live there! The house looks amazing. Looking forward to seeing what you get up to in your second year!
Thank you 🏡 we also love Anglesey. It was one of our go to weekend escapes in the van we lived in Cheshire. We could stay on the beach carpark at Lligwy beach for £10 but it got stopped after COVID. It is gorgeous
Hi again , Richard and Jackie- love your new home and learning about the renovation. We renovated our cottage 13 years ago and moved to Weardale. Luckily Steve is handy and did it himself mainly. Could never go back to town life . We are in Canary Islands for a bit of sun. Looking forward to travelling in our van in the new year. You must blog your Xmas with the family. Thanks
Thank you ☺️ we are loving being in the hills and countryside and it is such a great feeling returning to the cottage after our travels. Enjoy your holiday x
It looks lovely, cosy and cost efficient to run which is exactly what you want given your plans and early retirement. A great find and a great place to have as your final forever home and the location looks fabulous. Insulation upstairs will make such a difference for you so a really good piece of work to do when you are ready.
We were a little worried last winter that everything was on electric with rising prices😬. However our bill for last month with all the cold frosty weather using the electric radiators was still only £105 so it is definitely cost efficient… right upto the point that we bought £100 of wood 🪵 🤣 but the fire is almost like our entertainment watching the flames and it heats the whole house once it’s at full capacity.
Hi Richard and Jackie, Love your channel, thank you for sharing your travels with us. You've made a lovely job of renovating your gorgeous little cottage. We're of similar age, but while we aren't retired yet we are certainly working towards it! Currently building our forever home- to a strict budget! We note you've fitted a Howdens kitchen, are you able to share which range yours comes from?, it looks fab. Keep up the good work. Darren and Karen.
Hi we certainly love our cottage now it is finished. I think the kitchen was from the Chelford range in dusk blue. I know it was at the cheaper end of their ranges. We found it hard to work out because howdens would not give us a price. We had to go through the kitchen fitter once we had designed and decided on what we wanted as they will only deal with trade! But we do love the kitchen ♥️
Many thanks for the reply guys. We're having a similar problem with planning ours! Because, whilst Howdens do allow self-builders to have an account of their own (essential for re-claim of VAT on new build), they are reluctant to give an idea of cost increment across their range? Have a Happy Christmas and enjoy your skiing trip.⛷ @@earlyretirementwanderlust
Loved watching this video, can I ask what the flooring is in the downstairs as we are in the process of renovating our house whilst building our campervan. love the curtains and lamps. Also what brand of white paint did you use as this is another task I am facing. My first room I am not happy with paint finish, this is our 4th renovation but we were much younger then lol
Hi we went for an Amtico Van Gogh flooring as it is simple to keep clean and makes the house look much bigger downstairs as it goes all the way through. I had fun making the lamps - there is a lovely material shop in Skipton and I order the lamp kits on Amazon 🙂 Wow you must have lots of energy to do 4 renovations - we weren't looking for a project and although we love the house we found parts of the renovation quite stressful, particularly keeping to a budget!! The paint was a delux 'timeless' colour that we chose because they did it in the industrial size Vats so it was cheaper 🤣
Hi it was Amtico flooring from the cheaper Van Gogh range. We also looked at the Karndean flooring which we had in our old house and had lasted us over 15 years. The Amtico was slightly cheaper 😊
Love your cottage & your renovation story!
Thank you - it’s nearly 2 years since we got the keys and we absolutely love it. We still feel like we are coming home to a little holiday cottage in the Dales whenever we travel which is a fantastic feeling 😊

You have a beautiful home - well done on the work you’ve done. I love the kitchen units colour.
Thank you - we absolutely love our home. It feels like we are returning to a little holiday cottage each time we come home!
Love the renovation. You have done really well. I enjoyed the tour of the property.
Thank you. We love the cottage - it may be tiny but it has every thing we want and need!

Your cottage is gorgeous. I loved seeing you on Escape to the Country this afternoon. We too dream of the life you have. You are an inspiration.
Thank you so much for this. It has been a labour of love but we love the outcome. It is our little happy place❤️

I saw you both and the cottage on Escape to the Country recently! You’ve done such a great job with it.
Thank you, we do love it! 🏡
Well done a fantastic job. Looks lovely. We are just declutterring our house before we move out and go full time. Thanks Dave and Jo

Totally agree with your observations and really inspired by your experiences of simplicity. Great work guys 🤙🏼

Yes my Log Burner is the same it just makes the house cosy and warm and they are captivating.
Snap! We have the same kitchen and we love ours too
How good are they? It took a while to get it off Howdens, but we love it.
Have a good one. R
Great job..well done.
Thank you ☺️

You were lucky to find good trades! 🙈🤣
Definitely, they were all amazing. Especially the plumber and kitchen fitter. 🏡
Serendipity!!
Thank you!

Thanks for the quick reply its like a vinyl flooring isn't it? Glued down in strips?
@robkettle1971 yes it is and it is super easy to keep clean!
