The chicken we saw in the film was a hen. Hens are female chickens. Roosters are male chickens. Hens are the same as humans, really. The eggs that we buy and eat at the store are not fertile, meaning there is not a baby growing inside the egg. That would be nasty to eat. Essentially, a female homosapien's period is the equivalent of a hen's non-fertile egg. When a female homosapien doesn't have her monthly period, it's because her egg is fertile. When a hen lays an egg with a chick growing inside, it's fertile. There has to be a rooster, the male chicken, to fertilize the egg. Otherwise, the hens just have their periods, unfertilized eggs. Hope this explained it.
