We are Dani (daughter) and Sherry (Mom) and we flip furniture as a side hustle. This episode is all about our entry in the Ugly Duckling Challenge. This challenge is hosted by Cory @ Desert DIY. The rules are simple: Find an ugly piece of furniture and make it beautiful by 8/21/21. Cory will pick a winning entry and we are hoping it is ours because we found the 2 ugliest nightstands we have ever seen! But can we transform them into beautiful swans? Is this a true trash to treasure furniture makeover? Please watch and let us know what you think!
Honestly, we don’t expect to win this challenge as we are competing with many talented and wonderful furniture flippers/refinishers here on youtube. We are honored and blessed to have all the support and encouragement they have given us. Be sure to check out all their entries and videos on this playlist:

Your family is absolutely adorable. I love your approach to life as well as how you present your videos. I felt like I was watching TV! I would love to work with my mom in a creative way, what a wonderful bond you two have. Your pieces were truly ugly ducklings and the look you came up with for the end result was stunning. Wonderful color. Love the handles. Thank you for saving those pieces!
Well, thank you, Cory! You have an adorable family, too. And thank you so much for organizing this challenge. We are both huge fans of yours!
They turned out really cute! Enjoy your Mom. I lost mine 17 yrs ago when she was 63. I miss her dearly.
Thank you, Vickie! This is Sherry (Mom). So sorry that you lost her at such a young age. Dani and I do feel very blessed to be able to have this time together.
You nailed the retro style. Though not everyone's style, there are lots of people who are hot after the pieces like you did. Kudos to the two of you for giving two truly ugly night stands a second lease on life. And by the way, the home made wallpaper design is a touch of genius.
Thank you, Doc! Haha ... that homemade wallpaper was an act of desperation. We had to get them done that day and couldn't think of anything else that work at that moment. I'm glad it worked to add interesting detail.
Awe you ladies make me want to move to Arizona to work with my mom. I flip furniture and I learned she used to do the same when I was younger. You ladies are living the dream.
Oh, that's so cool, Kat! We are very fortunate to be able to live so close!
Love your mom. You two are so precious. Beautiful work.
Thank you, Nola. You are so kind!
You too made me miss my mum. 😓 Beautiful to see your bond and you did a wonderful job with your Duckie ❤️
Thank you, Di! We hear that quite often from ladies who miss their moms. We feel very fortunate to have this time together right now. - Sherry
Fantastic job.. the shade of blue you chose was very soothing and would be perfect in the bedroom!!! CUDOS to mom for making the wallpaper!!! It came out great!!!
Thank you, Nancy! This is Sherry (Mom). Yes, that stencil just wasn't working for me to apply directly on the inside of those pieces. Fortunately, I had a pad of thick watercolor paper to paint on as i only had a couple of hours to get it done.
So refreshing to see a mom and daughter team!!! amazing transformation!!
Well, thank you Lolita! Thanks for watching!
🐼 Big Bear Hugs from a 68 yr old grandma in Kirby, Texas, USA 🐼 ❤️ 🎀 ❤️ 🎀 ❤️
Haha... thanks for watching, Grammy Bear! I don't think I've been to Kirby but was in San Antonio about 10 years ago and it was just lovely. How many grandchildren do you have?
Hi this is my first time viewing you lovely ladies. I love a Mother Daughter Team💕 You did pick some very difficult pieces and you definitely turned them into Swans!🌟💫 love the color, hardware and those gorgeous legs.....Great Job👍🏻....new subscriber for sure❣️....thank you for sharing 😊kim
Oh, thank you, Kim! So glad you found us and thanks for subscribing. That means a lot! - Sherry
You make a great team and it's always nice to step out of your comfort zone once in a while. Well done. These turned out really nice.
Thanks so much! Glad you like them. They were a challenge but we did learn a lot. - Sherry
Amazing transformation. Definitely went from ugly ducklings to beautiful swans. Great job ladies!!!
So sweet, JoAnn! Thank you!
I really like the way these came out! The homemade wallpaper is fabulous; it ‘makes’ the pieces.
Thank you, Kay! You are also so supportive and kind. We really appreciate your comments! - Sherry
Colors are superb. The fact that you have working knowledge of power tools and would try legs has to count as was that textured paper inside. Gee Willikers! Good to meet you two. Thank you. Duckling grew up into ,if not swan, the most beautiful pair of geese. Geese in water. Majestic.
Thank you so much 😀! I love that: a beautiful pair of geese in water. That is a very nice comment. Thank you, Nancy!
@@secondchanceohana been around both geese and swans( never owned) but took care of a bunch of ducklings for a friend with a broken arm. If there had been a cygnet I'd a figured it out that it wasn't ugly. Always the literalist, not Hans Christian Anderson.
@@nancyberg6260 Haha... I had to look up the meaning of "cygnet" and pictures of them (grew up in the suburbs of So. CA). Have to say, they are pretty cute!
You ladies did an amazing job on the tables! They are gorgeous!❤️🌻😊
Oh, thank you, Beverly! And thank you for watching today!
I love this channel for so many reasons. It makes me miss my mom so much more but in a wonderful way.
Oh Laura, I'm so sorry about losing your mom. Those mother-daughter relationships can be so beautiful. And I am glad that we remind you of the wonderful times you had with her. Thank you so much for watching!😘
@@secondchanceohana thank you so much for having such an adorable channel and for being so inspiring.
Those are so cute! Love the color and the paper/stencil. Oh, if you dip the dogs tail in the paint, you could have done a special paint effect. But then again that would create a while new mess!
Haha ,,,, yep ... she needs a bath and haircut badly (reminds me of a mop right now) but her tail would probably work as a great abstract paintbrush. Thanks for watching!
You definitely turned those ducklings 🐥 into beautiful swans 🦢 they are so cute! Love thier little feet and that hardware is perfect!!
Thank you, Melanie! We are inspired to do a base like you did for your Ugly Duckling next!
Love the colour and they went from looking non- functional to cute mid century style!! You and your Mum are so fun to watch!
Thank you so much, Tina! This is Dani's Mum... where are you from?
@@secondchanceohana Hi there! I'm from Ontario, Canada!
They look a lot better than they started out. Well done. Love the new hardware.
Hello Emer! Welcome back. Thank you!
Great transformation, love saving stuff from landfill 💕
Thank you, Diane. Yes, I think I bought them because they were so ugly, I wanted to save them. A Little weird... haha. Anyways, thank you for watching today. - Sherry
You all did a great job! Love the color and pulls! AND LEGS!!
Thanks so much, Dee! Haha....Dani was so excited about those legs...it is fun to do something new and have it turn out good. Thank you for watching!
I love you ladies and laughed at mom when she told you to reel it in on revealing too much lol. Loooove the paper inside. These are completely different pieces now. You two do such nice work. Way to crush this challenge!
Thanks Jenn! Haha, that is so funny. This is Sherry and you pinpointed one of our major personality differences. I am on the quiet side and Dani isn't. I remember once when she was about 10, I asked her about the book she was reading. Well, 45 minutes later, she was still outlining every detail about that story... Thanks again for your encouragement!
@@secondchanceohanaoh my goodness, Sherry, that's adorable. Love the story 🥰🤗
I would love to see someone tackle Mediterranean furniture in a challenge. But that piece was ugly and you did d an awesome job! Turned out just lovely!
Thank you Roberta! Well, Mediterranean furniture would be a challenge...
loooove the stencil idea so clever!!!
You absolutely Smashed it guys! Definitely two very little ugly ducklings into beautiful swans 🦢 🙌
Hello Dean and Chantal,, thanks so much!!!!
I really love these and I’d have snapped them up if I lived close ! fantastic job
Awww.... thank you, Dianne! It was a lot of work for a couple of small nightstands but it was satisfying to give them new life.
Wow!!! You guys actually made them look like a matching set!! Haha great job! And aloha :) I’m from Maui as well. Born and raised. Looking forward to the next one!
Thank you! 🤗 Aloha, Marissa! Haha... they were almost a matching set when we got them except the one had a glass knob on the drawer and legs. I had already removed the "lodgepole" trim a few months ago on 1 of them and got discouraged and lost my vision for them. (Too much work... but the challenge inspired me to get them done and off my patio...)
@@secondchanceohana oh got ya. One looked significantly smaller
So stinking cute!!!! Awesome job ladies!
Haha... Thank you, Sabrina!
Quite the transformation! Love the legs! Definitely a lot of hard work but you did great!! 😊
Thanks so much! We were very glad to get this one done in time for the challenge deadline. Yikes!
I love your makeover❤ and love that you get to work with your family!
Thanks LaVonne! Yes, it is really great to be able to work together. A true blessing!
You wiped the ugly right off of those! Great job!
Thank you Jim and Cindy! We are so glad to have them done!
Love the Star Trek handles!
Thanks Julie-Ann. They are super fun and very Star Trek...haha.
they turned out super cute, love the colour too
Meg, thank you, thank you thank you!!! I'm not sure we did a good job conveying what a pain these were and what a relief it was to finish them.....
Gorgeous! Love the knobs!
Thank you Kathleen! We were grateful to find those. And thank you for watching!
Great job saving these funky pieces.
Thank you, Beverly!

These came up amazingly 😍😍😍 well done gals
Thank you, Tarnya! They were definitely scary and we weren't sure how they would turn out but were pleasantly surprised in the end.
@@secondchanceohana they are now AMAZING!
Oh my! Those sure were some ugly pieces. Love how they turned out and the stenciled wallpaper was awesome.
Thank you so much, Sue! Yes they did "stretch" us a bit. And as always, we learned a lot! I think the wallpaper was my favorite part, too.
Really cute!
Thank you, Denise! So glad you liked them. - Sherry
Look great xx
Thank you Karon! And thanks for joining us today!
Awesome!
Thank you, Melanie! And thanks for watching.
Great job ❤️
Thank you so much 😀
they look amazing ladies! those handles, i want them!!
Thanks, Twitch! Yes, thank you Amazon for the handles, we got them in the nick of time! We ordered some from Etsy but only received 1 (obviously needed 2 for this project) so had to change direction last minute.
Lovely 😊
Thank you, Valerie! 😊
Beautiful but I missed Sammy.
Haha... yes, she is back in school now and couldn't help with these but I think she will be appearing again soon. She and Dani are going to refinish some "new" furniture for her bedroom.
Very smart
Thanks Angela! And thanks for watching!🤗
I would love a tutorial on how you made those cute legs!
Hi Laura, that's a great idea! That was the first time Dani made her own legs so she was just experimenting and they turned out great. We will be making some similar legs for another piece next week so i'll ask her to go in to make it a tutorial as she is building them. Thanks so much for the suggestion! - Sherry🤣
