He only didn’t need a sword because Thorfinn was so consumed by revenge that he was easy to anger and make him an easy target, if Thorfinn would’ve been able to master his emotions and keep calm he would’ve beaten Askeladd a while ago, you can see by how Thorfinn is able to get the upper hand over Askeladd but once he gets worked up he immediately fails
