  • The single leg squat is in our opinion, one of the most useful functional tests. We perform this test to assess the following:
    - The type of hip and knee strategy used for squatting down
    - Pelvic stability and symmetry
    - Compensation strategies
    - Ankle mobility and function
We begin by assessing with a 6 inch distance and progress to 9 inch and eventually to a 12 inch distance with high level performers. We don't use this test for diagnostic but rather quality assessment and changes to the strategies as we get deeper in the squat.
You'll notice in this participant that when we tested the right lower limb, the left hip dropped during the 9 inch distance. This was due to a lack of ankle dorsiflexion on the right side which create a "Trendelenberg" pseudo appearance. Meaning that the left side of the pelvis dropped, similarly to what you would expect with someone with a gluteus medius deficiency on the right side.
