- Because of this great event (since 1962 only 10 gorillatwins were born in zoo's in American and Europe; N'Gayla is the first one in Europe and second one 'worldwide' who raised a twin all by herself) there was a birthday cake for the gorillagroup.

Looks like Daddy gorilla really enjoyed the "birthday" cake. Really sad that the others didn't get very much. Couldn't they have kept the male gorilla inside for a little longer so the others could have had more?
Donna Jean Right but at least they said the keepers went to the roof and was throwing food down for the others to eat also

Understand that in the wild, but this is a special day for them in captivity .So let them each have their own special day just for a hour or so.And then back to pecking order.@andreww1225
This is simply just some of the BEST footage EVER...I NEVER tire of it no matter how many times I come back & watch it over & over AGAIN...I love how everyone rather defers to "Big Daddy," in the beginning & lets him eat his fill first before cautiously moving in closer themselves to score whatever tasty treats are left...So very, VERY enjoyable to watch...
Dad didn't get the memo: It isn't HIS birthday.... Maybe he thought the "1" represented... "I'm number 1." It is the unwritten rule in Gorilla World.... Dad eats first, and he eats as much as he wants. Love how some family members do their best to sneak away with a pepper or two!

Obviously I know zookeepers can’t separate daddy gorilla from the family & in the wild it wouldn’t matter if the rest of the family got any of the special treat or not. As with any species first dibs on food or anything always goes to the dominant male in return for their protection. Yes this family is in captivity but the family dynamics don’t change...and the silverbacks role is still to protect his family at all cost. The silverback isn’t going to differentiate between being in the wild & captivity when it comes to his position in the family. I was glad to hear that zookeepers did make sure that the entire family did get to enjoy a good amount of special treats and the person filming the moment had just focused on the silverback reacting to the special birthday cake which was just as fun to watch! I didn’t think zookeepers would just have one special cake for everyone...They know the families different personalities better than anyone therefore would have known “sharing” the cake wouldn’t have been an option for daddy silverback and had to have made sure the rest of the family could also enjoy the treats too.
Seems to me the male ate the whole cake by himself. It upset me that the zookeepers didn't arrange things to let the twins really enjoyed their party.
(Very late, but I've been very very busy the last months) The zookeepers made sure the others got enough too; I witnessed that. But I focused on the silverback and the 'special cake'. As with all gorillas (both in the wild as in captivity) the silverback can claim all he want. And if it's very jummy he will. That's gorilla life! Keeping the silverback apart from the others is never an option!! That would frustrate him. Not because of the food, but because he can't do his job: watch and protect his family.

Because of this great event and the stupidity of people, the birthday twins got no food. Would have made more sense to have more than one display of food.

The twins are going to have several playing companions. There were quite a few new moms with their babies at the party.

The 2nd and 3rd birthday were on 13 June 2015 and 13 June 2016 ;-) Since the first one was special, they did this. The other birthdays weren't celebrated like the first one.

Wow! Hoevéél kan zo'n silverback eten?!? Wij zouden het aan onze maag/darmen krijgen van zoveel paprika's haha. De "lijm" (siroop) konden de kleintjes ook wel smaken. Koddig hoe ze zich in alle bochten wrongen om eraan te kunnen. Oké ik ben 6 jaar te laat op hun birthday party maar nu pas dit filmpje ontdekt :-)
Iedere gorilla kan heel veel eten ;-) Ik heb een keer de moeder van de tweeling een stuk of 9 hele grote uien achter elkaar zien eten .....

Yep, silverbacks can always claim all the food if they want to. That's why they normally spread food over the entire island in Burgers' Zoo. That way they all can have their share. In Apenheul they have a gorilla presentation where they throw food to the group. If Jambo (their silverback) sees something he likes, he can claim that too even though it's thrown to another gorilla. But he doesn't do that often. The same is in Gaia Zoo with silverback Makula. But he's the most relaxt silverback I know when it comes to food.

It was a birthday for the twins. They should have fixed it to where the twins and mother could have got to it first.it wasn't much of a birthday for the twins.dad jogged most of it. Poor twins.

The point was to celebrate that the twins turned one. Not many moms can do that job. Not 'all the oter gorillas' ate their cake by the way. The silverback, any silverback, can and will always claim food. Especially when it's his favourite. Luckily every gorilla got more food a few minutes later.
Aww Such a shame that only a few of the others got a vegetable. Big boy's rather greedy. What;s the orange stuff on the wall where the lettuce was? They like licking it.
I think it was some kind of syrup, but I'm not sure. Silverbacks are always greedy and not sharing. If they want to have something, they even steal it from their kids. But most of the time just looking at a piece of food makes sure that the others don't touch it. But other gorillas get enough food too.

That's gorilla life: the silverback can always claim all the food if he wants. If it's his favourite food, he does. They don't share. Even worse: both dads and moms are known (some individuals more than others) to take food out of kids' mouths.

The adults will eat up everything it's the twins birthday and they aren't there to get a one so all the treats mostly went to greedy dad that's a shame so watching this what was the point so sad look at that a big mess a lot of them still aren't going to get to eat they are going crazy better off just giving each of them food and treats the dad was eating oranges already and he left with arms ful .
First of all: the silverback has to lead his family and has to be the strongest one so he can claim all the food if he wants.
2: the keepers threw food to all others.
3: Look at their bellys, they get more than enough ... always, every day.
4: birthdays are for humans; apes (and all other animals) don't have a clue.
That’s not a silverback gorilla…..that’s a silverback hog.
Just like our house, kids. Dad got the largest portion 😂
