There is a reason why I'm afraid of AE.
Nah man, AE is rather a composition tool than a effect making tool. That's why all the effects made in After Effects only look cool if you composite them in the right way because that's what after effects can do best.
It really blows my mind how you can make a thing like this out of nothing.

I love this fast paced tutorial, because it just shows me to rethink the tools available to me. I probably won’t take the time to actually recreate the effect, but it shows me how much the tools I do have can be transformed into something insane, for when I do have a larger project.

That’s really cool! I love After Effects and we’ve used Red Giant products for years. Stranger Things is cool and the Mind Flayer was definitely freaky. I like you you did this in AE. I did the Hawkins Tunnel System in Blender, but AE is way faster for integrating everything. Nice work!

Luckily for your CPU, Supercomp works on the GPU instead, so that should help.
Wow I thought you would need some crazy 3d sim software like Houdini for fx like this but this guy just did the whole thing right in AE. Crazy

red giant is the best plugin for after effects my favourite plugins are universe, magic ballet looks, and trapcode. love them they are simple and very cool.

incredible tutorial Seth.. i really dig the them and the result!! you are so rushing through it, its really hard to follow, also what is confusing you seems to jump around and not mentioning parts, like the camera setup and scene, i really appreciate the short length but would more like if the tutorial is a bit longer and more complete so that also not so advanced user that are just starting out (like me) can better follow and recreate, cheers!!

maybe you could put a matte choker or something to the sky layer to reduce the haze around the trees... at some frames (7:23) it's painfully evident, another thing you could add some red solid faded down and blurred as some sort of... depth map or fog? maybe
