Aikido Demonstration during the 2019 Kagami Biraki & Budo Hajime, at the Nippon Budokan.
Tanto-dori by Suzuki Toshio Shihan, 6th Dan and Suzuki Kohei, 2nd Dan.
Aikido is a contemporary martial art founded mid 20th century by Ueshiba Morihei.
The founder studied several Japanese traditional martial arts while pursuing an intense spiritual practice. This leads to the transformation of the techniques, from “Jutsu” or “technical application” to “Do”, “the Way”, implementing a focus on the development of the practitioner’s character.
The founder used to say: "True martial arts are not meant for competing with techniques that rely on strength, but are a way for those who seek self-perfection".
Today’s demonstration consists of throwing techniques, grappling techniques, defense against knife and free techniques, by a delegation from the Aikikai Hombu Dojo, the Aikido world headquarter.
The Kagamibiraki is a traditional ceremony which translates to "opening the mirror" (symbolically).
Taking its roots in the Shogunate, it is strongly linked to Budo practice and it is natural that the Budo Hajime (first practice of the year) is celebrated at the same time.
At the Nippon Budokan, the ceremony is held at the beginning of January and consists in:
    - The Kagamibiraki, with a historical reconstruction (in armor).
    - Budo Demonstrations (by the 9 "official Budo").
    - Budo Hajime (first practice of the year, all practitioners present can practice).
    - The Oshiruko kai. “Oshiruko” is a traditional and popular sweet azuki bean paste soup with mochi (which symbolize the sharing of the mochi that was broken before during the ceremony).

In the past O'Sensei and his students were less formal at the moment to given back the weapon to the Uke. Nowadays there is an excess of theatrical postures.

      Were you there?
Because, depending on whom you ask, some of his students said he was often very strict on protocol. Especially Kobayashi Hirokazu (post-war).
O Sensei was also very focused on sword related etiquette because of his connection to religion.
The etiquette has a reason to be. Without it, there's no Budo.

I don't know if you speak French, basically this video expose how the O'Sensei practice of Jo and Bokken was totally free of the traditional Japanese stereotypes and preconceived movements and katas. Both weapons were subordinated to the principles of Aiki, and not the opposite. He used to switch the use of the Jo as a Bokken, and the Bokken as a Jo at will. Later on, some of his students, in an effort to systematize his practice, developed some sort of katas and structures, that later on became in to a totally rigid, stereotyped and unnatural practice of Aikido, subordinating the principles of Aiki under a supposed Japanese Martial tradition of the use of weapons. That's why nowadays we see styles like Iwama, so far away from the natural, fluid and spontaneous Aikido of the founder, and the most funny part, is that they proclame they do the "real Aikido of the founder".
In reality what they do is the Aikido of Saito, who learned Aikido like the rest of Shihans, to later on changing the way of practicing according to his own closed interpretation.

      Too much talk.
Just watch the master in action using weapons.
Fluid, dynamic and spontaneous, not like most of the Aikidoist of today, that believe that Buki Waza is a never ending stereotyped theatrical kata like Morihiro Saito used to sell as "the real aikido of the founder"
