The Steam Deck is the current icon of the new trend in PC Handhelds, and after having been out for a couple years I wanted to double check in on whether or now now is a good time to get one. Whether because of competing other handhelds or the possibilities of a new model or price drop anywhere in the near future, let's talk about the options for grabbing a Steam Deck today and whether or not now is the right time.

Honestly, I dont think 2025 would be the year of a new steam deck. It goes against their idea they had for the steam deck refresh cycle. 2026 would be reasonable. Part of their idea of having a long refresh cycle is having something to work on, something to work towards. It has a large user base, abandoning it for a new model too soon, would cause fragmentation. It's largely why so many titles kept releasing with ps4 versions years after the ps5 release. Consumers are not so ready to go and move to a new platform, especially in the current economy.
Well they said they will announce it in 2025 soooooo yeeeaahhh.. and by what economic magazine says valve is gonna release on 2026, and if they go console schedules it will be late 2026.. so close to 2027.. but i won't hold my breath on that I'll say the end of 2027 is when will be released

What are you talking about? A steam deck 2 would just be able to play more games, but the os would be exactly the same between the two. There is no fragmentation in a traditional console sense. If a games doesn't run on the old steam deck but does on the new one, it is just because of hardware limitations.
Having a new steam deck next year is a positive no matter how you slice it, with no down side. At the end of the steam a steam deck is just linux gaming and that has a lot of issues, if you don't want to deal with linux limitations just using a windows hand held. Which already are more powerful and next year will be even greater.
@@FierroSev it causes developers to not have a proper target for performance. It's really not that hard to understand. Things are getting bloated. Both in size, and in unnecessary overhead. Games don't look that much better, but perform much worse and consume more battery. Stability is part of what comes with a longer life cycle. You're also assuming valve intends to support each device if they constantly push a new one. They are the one behind most of the software making these games work on their platform. Who is to assume they will keep putting out steamos and proton updates for older platforms produced by them when they haven't released it fully for anyone to use and install.

I tend to put Roms, indies and less demanding games on the SD card while reserving bigger more demanding games on the SSD. 1tb is awesome but I get greedy with my space so I ended up using my 512gb sd and it feels just enough.

Speaking from experience, yeah - it's worth it.
Especially if you're knee-deep into Valve's ecosystem and/or have a massive backlog a mile long, the Deck is amazing for that.
And hell, if you're into emulation, it is hands-down one of the best options available. Especially once you get EmuDeck up and running.
Best of all is that the Deck is basically a Linux PC in a handheld package, so if you wanted to use it as your main computer, you can.
It's the closest there is to a modern-day PSP, seeing as everything the PSP did, the Deck does it better, and in a modern package to go with it.

Grabbed an LCD model on electronic bay for a significant discount. It works great and was well worth the money. I have been impressed with the quality of the product and definitely recommend it. I don't think anyone on the fence would regret going for it.

As a Medical Doctor who also games as a hobby, I use my Steam Deck more than my 4070 gaming PC unless I absolutely need to play with AAA titles like Forbidden West. So yes it’s not too late to buy one unless there’s a new one coming.
I’ve also bought a portable monitor, keyboard and mouse and I intend to use it as a “tablet PC” at work instead of my iPad Pro M2 since Stage Manager is clunky. That’s how good the Steam Deck is.
You won't have any issues at all using it docked. About 75% of my usage is docked, and it's a smooth and easy experience.
You should be able to play Horizon forbidden West on the deck as well

@@potbem5333 About 95% of my use is gaming and internet, but you can also make it do productivity stuff depending on your needs.
If your work uses Windows-based programs that don't have a Linux version or equivalent, well... that's always a toss up. Sometimes you can get them working through Proton/Lutris/Bottles tinkering, while sometimes, they can't work at all.
But it can be a productivity beast in other ways. For example, in the Deck's gaming mode, I've configured it to use Firefox and Libre Office (compatible with MS Office), and I can use it handheld smoothly through the regular controller controls, and with voice typing through a program called Decky Dictation. It takes a little set up, but works fantastically.
In short, it depends on what you need to run on it.

i got my steam deck lcd about a month ago and i quickly realized the emulation potential this little beast has, currently i'm having a blast with ps3 and switch games on a daily basis

Just wanted to drop a comment to say I went with the cheapest refurbished option and then just popped an 128gb SD card I had in there. They are only in stock for brief windows of time so you got to keep an eye on them. I was really impressed with the unit I got and it was it had no scrathes or anything. Unboxing was like a new product.

Make your money IDC but at least choose a shitty product rather than an unethical one.

I love a ton of things about my oled but the best feature by far is how accessible it's made gaming for me. Have some nerve damage in my right hand from a stroke and through the combination of the back buttons, touchpad and steam input settings, I've been able to create a lot of control schemes that work waaaay better for me. Super nice system!!

I'd argue the viewing angles are more important on a portable device since sometimes you have to angle it away from glares and/or just for comfort of how you're holding it.

Take it from someone that has both if them, your not missing out on the oled.. graphics very, and iy has a hard time playing a lot of games.. mosy bugs sre recently getting corrected... don't follow what most oled buyers say... be wise and stay with in your budge.. but even so, the only thing that's big on for oled is price screen and small little features.. the hype soon goes away after you learn you have to mess with it to get games going to your prefection. The hardware is the same expect the screen. 250 to 625 after taxes and shipping.

I literally just traded in a Series X for $390 to Gamestop, bought Steam gift cards with credit ($200 at a time) and then bought a steam deck 2 days ago. Wasn't using xbox, and can still access game pass via cloud.

The better viewing angle helps a lot when you're using the gyro aiming. I use gyro/touchpad a lot when I'm FPS gaming.

You don't know how perfect the timing of this is. I'm torn on a used 512gb for $275-300 or just going 1tb OLED for $649. I need the anti glare and to be honest, I didn't notice the 512gb oled didn't have the anti glare til I saw your video.

@@IconSince87 From what i can briefly remember, they sold patient data and confidential conversations between patients and "therapists" and sold it to advertisers to create ads for those people based on their personal struggles and mental health issues. Among many things. Not to mention the company better help is under and doesn't have the greatest history.
Look up any video on youtube about better help, and they'll explain it a whole lot better.

And they have a history of staff that were abusive to PoC and queer clients. As well as general racism, sexism, and not doing anything about it when the issues were brought up, as well as other really shitty practices, including working with conversion therapy and anti-autism agencies. This all comes from people online who have shared their experiences, including screenshots from their sessions.
Love my OLED one and that was upgraded from the original LCD versions. If you want a good handheld with god support then I personally wouldn't by from anyone else except from Valve.
All I play games on now is the OLED Steam Deck. As soon as they make a Steam Box 2.0 with the Steam Deck OS and features, im there.
I love the Steam Deck OLED. It's like buying a new console that comes jailbroken. I have my GOG library in with my Steam games and with Emudeck I have something like 40,000 games. I have an SSD plugged into my dock with Batocera on it. It's loaded with arcade games I don't play portably because I want the full arcade experience like Light Gun, Racing, and Fighting games. Another plus is all my controllers, arcade stick and steering wheel connect to the Steam Deck with no issue. I know you can do all this stuff on a PC but the Steam Deck offers a console experience, and it's a handheld. This device will never be outdated for me.
I installed Windows on an SD card and it runs pretty well, other than the audio drivers... I need headphones to hear anything since the speakers won't work. It's probably not the best, but it is serviceable for the Windows games I play. I absolutely love the Steam Deck OLED screen and the console is really comfortable, so it's a trade off I was happy to make.
Gonna go ahead and get the Oled sweet spot option!

I just ordered the 1 TB OLED, but I plan to play the Sims 2 and a very highly modded Sims 4 on my steam deck.
Before Steam Deck i had never used a pc for games, always had a console but since my life got more busy compared to when i was younger i realized i never used said console, only played my 3ds (wich was the only handheld i owned) in bed at the end of the day when i had some spare time, so i decided, based on how much reviewers praised Steam Deck for its easy handling, to sell my console and games and buy a Steam Deck and i have not regretted this decision since, for somebody who was used to console's out of the box experience the Deck wasn't too much of a leap, it felt very familiar since day one and i slowly got to understand PC complexities at my own pace, the only thing i miss are some older Xbox titles not available on Steam or through emulation, that's why if Microsoft actually decides to make an Xbox handheld i might still be interested, but otherwise, with the Steam Deck i got all i wanted.

Bought the oled steamdeck one month ago best buy ever,,,,,,,and for emulation many great ps2 games looks and play fantastic on the deck......even xbox cloud gaming plays excellent
I would say it's DEFINITELY worth it! I feel like most sites are focusing on "the latest AAA games". But honestly, PC gaming is about SO much more than that, and once you ditch the idea of the latest AAA-games (that pushes graphical fidelity to the limit) and instead focus on typical PC gaming, you will be impressed! I generally get 4-9 hours of battery on the LCD model while the hardware also feels extremely powerful at the same time. It's honestly more than enough performance for anything you throw at it... It's only when you throw exclusives for this console generation where it starts t o struggle, Like UE5 games... Sure, you can play them, but preferably at low/medium settings and aggressive upscaling, while only having 1.5-2.5h battery
If I played a majority of my games on PC through Stream, I might consider getting a Steam Deck. But I'm mainly a console gamer so right now I'm waiting for a PS5 Pro (provided it's true) or a price cut on the PS5 Slim.

there are only 2 reasons why i upgraded to the oled and without one it would not have happened. 1 I really wanted to go from the 64 gb to the 1tb. 2 my OG had had a issue pop up and valve had to replace it with a new one, so I got to resale it as new. Everything else was a grate bonuses.
The steam deck got me into PC Gaming. It's quite an amazing handheld, but there were too many games that I couldn't play due to them being unsupported. That made me switch over to the ROG Ally, which is much more powerful, but it made me miss how console-like the steam deck was. Now I'm just waiting to see how xbox's handheld turns out.
Which games are you talking about? Just multiplayer games that have anti cheat? Or are you talking about something else?
In testing it’s hardly been called much more powerful than the steamdeck, a little more powerful, but you might be exaggerating a bit. It only really reached that point with the overlock mode, which kills the battery way too fast to be practical in many situations.
Edit: also, having the track pads are really nice. Some games benefit from them a ton

I have a SD. It's a great device and man, the speed at which you're able to jump in & out of games is superb. That being said, I just prefer the TV or monitor form factor and thereby wish Valve would put out a new Steam Machine that had some of the niceties of the SD but far more powah.

I bought my Steamdeck OLED 1TB 2 weeks ago for 2 reasons. First, the screen is phenomenal for outside play. I like to hammock and play and take it camping. The second, battery life and price to performance for Indie titles specifically, is the best. I play my Indie games on my Steamdeck and my more graphically compensating games on my pc. I’d say if you don’t have a pc and you want a handheld pc opposed to a laptop, go with the Asus ROG X when it releases later this Summer
This has been the best device I’ve ever purchased. Waited a year to get mine delivered for the lcd model. It got to the point where my wife wanted to play it too so we would take turns. Finally, when the OLED model came out my wife so happened to win $500 bucks from the scratch ticket from the gas station so she called me and asked if I wanted the terabyte model rather than a Christmas present that way I could just give her the LCD model and I could have the OLED. Now, we can both play project zomboid on the couch while our son has the T.V on and toys.
I second that, since getting mine I barely touch my PS5 and Switch. I'm just upset I didn't get one earlier

I would recommend if you scroll all the way down on the page where it says the options they have the 64 GB and one still and I would recommend just buying a SSD. It’s what I did.
What about an Rog ally or legion go and getting steam OS or Bazzite OS.
Legion is a must, excellent handheld which plays triple most triple A titles the best hands down
You REALLY should've touched on repairability. That's a major thing with the Steam Deck.
The factor that you want a Gaming P.C on the go? I mean, just have a controller with you with your phone or let alone a Nintendo Switch just for portability alone.
The masses want a steam deck that we can connect a quest 3 headset to, and be able to download games to the deck to play them in VR.
The only problem for me is i have to buy it through reseller which makes the price a lot higher than it should be

Just open up the system and upgrade the SSD. The Micro SD card will suffer SOME performance loss. Be it more stutters, longer loading or a small fps drop. A small drop doesnt sound bad but a game thats running at 33fps needs as much extra headroom for a stable lock as possible.
I really like the steam deck, i also test one at my friends house. But sadly i dont have a use-case for it.

My biggest question (bevor watching the video, maybe i get a answer): Is it easy to get the xbox pass on the steam deck? This would be a big point for buying or not.
Without installing Windows the answer is no, you can setup X cloud so you can stream games but thats only available for Gamepass ultimate. If you want Gamepass games on a handheld directly like I did, get another device, I have a ROG Ally Z1 Extreme model, I like it but Asus have been pretty bad recently with RMA issues so check what ASUS are like in your country before considering buying anything from them.
It takes 5 minutes to set it up through using edge browser and adding it to steam library. Only xcloud
Even then is still say go with steamdeck. Installing windows edge to play gamepass isn’t all that difficult, and there are step by step guides to get it done without any issues

I'm probably going to get mine for a Christmas gift or a birthday gift but is it worth it console though because if it's just like the PS5 and it has all the games and everything just like a console does but the only reason why I kind of liked it is because it had Halo on the console in Forza
Its definetly too late to buy a Switch now, but Steam Deck OLED should still be good for another 2- 3 years.
Asus needs to include a tiny stylus with the Ally, similar to how Samsung Note phones have a stylus that pushes into the device. It would drastically improve usability of the device.

I got a steam deck LCD last month on the refurbished side of things for £249.
Bargain really.
You can do so much outside of steam and with steam, yes there are certain restrictions and oddties (mainly due to linux) but you can work around them thanks to the community.
Honestly a steam deck is the best option out there, whatever version you want.
I would never advise anyone getting a Steam Deck (I have one and its awesome but...), until Steam sells undefective units or allows iFixit to sell button/daughter boards. The bumpers stop working right after warrantee expires and they refuse to let you fix it yourself and if you just return it to Valve it will take months and they won't even send you back your same unit...no thanks.

You need to check out Joe Wander and the Enigmatic Adventures. It's a true indie gem, and it works well on my Steam Deck. I didn't see any bigger UA-camrs talking about it, but that game deserves more attention.
I'm debating between the ROG Ally X or Steamdeck OLED.
The steamdeck oled is the better buy using Linux runs better over windows since it's not equipped for mobile plus it has issues weaker battery and currently asus may be under investigation for warranty issues so I'd say get the 1tb oled steamdeck

@@animefrasier Battery should be better as it's 80whr vs 50whr. Deck LCD and OG Ally have very similar run times with the Deck being more efficient at 12w and under as they have the same size battery
@crestofhonor2349 I'm referring the the OLEd model. Has a longer battery that last a bit more plus the SD card issue overall between a few issues plus asus looking at investigation over. Warranty and customer support I don't. Trust em and steam is more user friendly and customizable run and look great. And more affordable.
I think Valve should take their time with the next iteration of the Steam Deck. I friggin love my OLED more than anything else I’ve ever owned tech and gaming-wise. The only reason I’d buy something else, including the next Deck, is if it keeps or improves on all the things it has now (solid price, long battery life, high refresh OLED screen, comfortable ergonomics, amazing support and optimizations on games, etc.) while also making a solid jump in performance, which doesn’t seem like exists at the moment or even in the near future.
To be more straightforward, the price to performance of the Ally, Go, and Claw are not enough to sway me from the Deck. I wouldn’t throw down money for a new system if that was the only jump in performance (especially giving that the battery on these is worse than the OLED Deck, which is something I wouldn’t want to sacrifice).
I think it would be a solid investment for someone to go for the mid-tier OLED Deck right now. At $585 (after tax and shipping), I really don’t know how anything else that compares in the handheld market, unless you really want a Windows device. Still, I’m excited and looking forward to the competition and future of handheld systems.
If I could finance / split pay in Canada direct from steam, I would. Can do this through Amazon, but it's all third party sellers, running the risk of getting a different cheaper model than ordered, and paying more.
