    So excited to see some new videos and I love this unfurling mechanism. How would you create a mechanism that does the opposite and closes as you open the page?

  • @ni1disponiblecarays
    @ni1disponiblecarays 5 років тому +1

    This reminds me of a mechanism used in reinhart and sabuda's books to spread the wings of birds and dragons. In case of the bird, advantage is taken of the unevenness between two parallel planes anchored to a u-fold (I think i remember), which triggers a lever that causes the tip of the wing to turn. Well, it'll be better you to see it. The book is called Ecyclopedia Prehistorica: Beasts. You can watch it on UA-cam. I think the dragon of Monsters and Dragons (also by Reinhart and Sabuda) is more like what you show in your video. I would love you to show us those mechanisms ^^
    I'm glad you came back, please, go on.

      Yes you're right. A bird with that type of movement from the Sabuda/Reinhart book appears near the end of the Be Amazed II video. I've thought I might include that mechanism if I do another series next year. Thank you for the encouragement.

    Thanks for all your videos. I want to ask you some question about the book RAVEN that you show us in this video 43. I like to know which is the mechanism that allow the man who reads, to raise the hands and the book. (Excuse me for my poor level of English)If you can explain it to me…. It will be great. If you can’t, do not worry I will understand. Thanks again

    • @thepop-upchannel4919
      @thepop-upchannel4919  2 роки тому

      The main mechanism is an M-Fold (Tutorial 19); The man's forearms and the book are made with a symmetric Parallel Fold (Tutorial 6); The Parallel Fold is attached to the outer planes of the M-Fold using Slots (Tutorial 11) with wing-tab joints. .... The angles on the M-Fold (the central V-Fold part of the mechanism) are the same as the angles on the page this makes the figure lean back to be almost flat when the page is open.

    Sigo intentando hacer tus videos. Gracias. Tengo otra pregunta, cuál es el mejor papel para la base (hice un primer intento con un papel grueso de 220 gms y junto a los dobleces quedan arrugas)

    • @thepop-upchannel4919
      @thepop-upchannel4919  4 роки тому +1

      220 gsm es un buen peso para usar en la base: para obtener un pliegue afilado y evitar arrugas, deberá marcar la línea de pliegue. Usualmente uso un bolígrafo sin tinta, o un cuchillo sin filo también es bueno.

    Dear Duncan, which paper thickness the best to use? and is there a maximum or minimum thickness?

    • @thepop-upchannel4919
      @thepop-upchannel4919  3 роки тому +1

      It depends on the size of the pop-up. The bigger the pop-up the more sturdy the card needs to be. The ideal card is rigid without being thick. In the tutorials I use photo copy card - 160 gsm. For much smaller pop-ups paper will work. For bigger (and better) pop-ups card up to 240 gsm is good - but if using thicker card it is necesssary to score the fold lines and that means they have to be measured accurately. The advantage of the card I use in the tutorials is that it can be folded easily and accurately without needing to score the creases.

    • @thepop-upchannel4919
      @thepop-upchannel4919  4 роки тому +2

      There's a quite extraordinary plane in Tutorial 14 at 12.45. To make it, (or an aproximation of it!) you'll need to understand the Box mechanism explained in Tutorial 14 and the Parallelogram explained in tutorial 5.

      The process of making the videos is quite long - after they've been uploaded to UA-cam it's not easily possible to add to them. Hopefully there are enough views of the hand in the video that you'll be able to work out how to make it.
