Pop-Up Tutorial 30 - V-fold action - Building a Tower

Yes, there is a lot to it but very pleasing creative results can be fairly easy. Try watching tutorials 1 and 2, make a couple of V-Folds, then watch tutorials 8, 7, and 22 to see easy ways of building onto them. Experimenting often helps!

:) . you're doing a wonderful thing, sharing, so I appreciate it very much. it came up when you referenced circular motion and gluing the circle at the point of a good and joint position. the challenge was understanding where the point was visually so the idea of glue and intersection was right. That's where all the visual angle references prompted me to at least suggest more close ups at the crucial bends and functional placements. I thoroughly appreciate and enjoy your generosity in this process. If you would like some editing support, I will help in Adobe as well. But; great channel. Much appreciated for the passion play of dimension and mechanics!!! Awesome!!!
Thanks for the offer. I think we've got it covered. I had another look at the circular motion tutorial and I see your point. It is actually a bit difficult to position the wheel correctly. What I neglected to mention in the tutorial is - if you look at the wheel there is a little square that has been shaded in, the little "L-shaped" piece glues on behind the shaded area.

Thanks so much for these videos. I'm so glad that I've found your channel! Is there any video/book instruction on how to polish or rather make a pop look "finished" ?
I'm not quite sure what exactly you mean by "finished"! There is a section in my book "Pop-Up Design and Paper Mechanics - How to make folding paper sculpture" That explains a bit about making "high quality" pop-ups. Use heavier card; Work out designs by making dummies first, then measure and score all the fold lines so that they're sharp and precise; Illustrate the pieces before gluing them all together. Hope this is of some help.

Tutorial 35 has an example of another method. The technique explained there can be extended to go even higher - I plan to explain it in a future video (later this year) - an excellent example is the final spread in Matthew Reinhart's book "POP-UP A Journey through the LEGO Universe".

Thank you for the array of coverage. Please spend a few visual moments (2 second close-ups) closest to the points and mechanics you're making, in the production, to help actually see them in focus as opposed to a full room dropped back scene. Kindest regards.

These are amazing books! What weight of card stock do they use in making books. Especially pieces of that height?
For quick and easy folding as shown in these tutorials, where the card doesn't need to be scored, I use 160gsm. for more substantial models probably 220gsm. is better, but this will have to be measured and scored. The ideal card is as rigid as possible and as thin as possible. sometimes most of a pop-up could be relatively light weight card and just make it double thickness where a component needs extra strength. The size of the pop-up also dictates the weight of the card - the bigger the pop-up the heavier the card needs to be.

how would you recommend I make a big mountain? I have fairly limited space along the gulley but was hoping to incorporate some hight. How would you make the sides angled?

Tried this one today. After a couple of attempts I realised that I wasn't matching the V-angles accurately enough when the first floating plane went on. Eventually worked out a technique to insert the plane folded and the tabs found their natural position. Still need to add the second and third tiers ... wish me luck. 😁

Hey Sir! I am trying to make a tall tree following this mechanism, similar to the example no.4 (big-bang pop-up book). Can you please explain a little bit more how to keep it tall and straight. Mine is slouching backward!
Yes that pop-up in the Big
Bang book is pretty amazing - also a bit difficult to make. The mechanism is
actually slightly different from the one explained in the video. I'll probably
try and explain the theory in another video at some point. In the meantime here
are the measurements for the pop-up that appears in Big Bang:- The main
structure is a V-Fold. On the V-Fold piece the angles between the central
crease and the creases of the tabs that glue it to the base are both 78
Degrees. On the base the angles between the spine fold and the points where the
V-Fold is glued to the base are both 68 Degrees. The section that rises up
really high is part of the V-Fold, there is a crease 15.8 cm above the base.
There is a second piece of card that pushes up the top section of the V-Fold
(Make this piece double thickness as it needs to be very rigid.). This second
piece is 18 cm long. It is glued to the base 3.2 cm behind (and parallel to)
the V-Fold. At its top end it is glued 1 cm above the crease. I hope this helps

The book about complex pop-up hasn't been published - I haven't forgotten it - various things got in the way - I still have it in mind though so It may yet get published.
What card did you use for this video? I have 160gsm, but I'm wondering if I should get thicker for this particular popup. Thanks
160 should be fine - making the card thicker usually means that you'll have to measure and score the fold lines. If the panels are buckling it's always possible to just cut out a piece that fits exactly and stick it on to reenforce the panel. As a rule of thumb - the bigger the model the stronger the card needs to be.

I've been meaning to make a video about this for ages! It's difficult and so every time that we're filming this particular mechanism seems to get dropped off the list. It is still on the list though so it may be explained one day!
What is the name of the book that was published in 2018 with “highly complex pop-ups”? Would love to buy it.
That book hasn't been published (a dispute witht the publishers!) - but some of the mechanisms that would/will be in the book are covered in Tutorials 57 -68.

Hi can I ask, why does the top levels slant?
V-Folds fold down in the direction that the V is pointing - so the slant is because the V isn't standing up perfectly. Partly this is because of the slight bendiness of the card. It could be made to stand up a bit more straight either by flexing the base to give it a bit more lift, or else by adjusting the angles on the V fold pieces, making them a little more acute will make it lift a little more.

Hi, Yes you're ahead of the game! I think Tutorial 30 more or less completes the academic type series that I've had in mind. I've been talking to Jane (the filmmaker) about where The Pop-Up Channel goes from here and we've decided to do a series on actual greetings cards - we've thought about Birthdays, Christmas and Valentines but of course other things are possible too. So I expect it will happen - but probably not till next year.

Also what is the exact name of the glue you are using? I can't find it
The glue I use in the videos is UHU. Really almost any glue will work ok - water based glues are a bit more difficult as they tend to dry more slowly so I prefer solvent based glues - if you are making a lot of pop-ups it's probably worth experimenting and finding which glue suits you best.

Sorry it's not working! In the tutorial make sure you look at 5.23 -5.35 this explains how the V-Folds can't be glued at 90 degrees to the spine. Hope it works next time round!

Hi! sorry to ask but it is destroying my brain!!! on the big bang pop.....the tall bit that pops up, I don't understand how that equates to the tower ! Help! I have tried so hard to recreate it and have failed miserably!!!
You're absolutely right - they don't equate! At the beginning of Tutorial 30 I am just showing examples of tall structures that rise up higher than the height of the page. The tower explained in that tutorial is just one of those mechanisms. The mechanism that features in the Big Bang Pop-Up is explained in Tutorial 35. The very tall "Rapunzel Tower" is another structure that I plan to try and explain in a forthcoming tutorial that I hope we can make before too long (lock down permiting).

Yes these pop-ups in Matthew Reinhert's book are very very clever and impressive. They would be difficult to explain in one of these simple tutorials - but I will think about it.

Curved shapes are very difficult to do. They are possible, but will take a long time to work out - a lot of trial and error. If you haven't spent much time experimenting with pop-up so that you really understand how things work you would probably do better to think of a different pop-up idea. If you still want to try it the videos I would look at to start with would be numbers 14, 18, 61, 62.
