- Very lush, made in the 80's Stereo Chorus from DOD. Sounds terrific, warm and crystal clear. Simple chorus, but very effective. The guy from the Cranberries uses this in his pedalboard, so it certainly captures THAT sound.
Thanks for the review, best one of this pedal on YT. Just picked one up!
very kind of you - glad you could make an informed decision based off my video
Varios pedales DOD de los 80's son excelentes....yo tengo este Chorus y es maravilloso. Gracias por el video. Saludos a todos.
I have one of these. I bought it new in the '80's. It still works great.
it's a fantastic analog chorus
John Chorusciante.
Frusgasmic
Frusciante \m/
sounds super chill.
An old bandmate used to use one of these. Always sounded really cool.
this one is lush-ier than the boss ce2, to my ears... and I love the Cranberries!
It def has a beautiful lushness to it - definitely awesome
Hey man, thanks for the great demo vid. Your demo helped me to decide to get this pedal off ebay. Really love the sound of it. Thanks for showing how it sound.
Thanks man, glad to hear it! That's exactly why I post my demos, just trying to give people a good idea to make informed decisions of their own. It really is a great sounding pedal. Also, I see you're an "Althauser", I happen to be an "Althouse" which came from "Althaus" so you and I must go way back somewhere in history man lol
ianA Ahh yeah we are related :) . Craziness. I wonder if all Althausers/Athouses eventually own the fx65. Hehe.
one day in an old music store, i found this and a beat-up 80's GE-7. $5 for both. i still use the FX 65 on my board, the lushest chorus i've heard to this day is when i put it after my Small Clone (i don't have a chorus problem, you have a chorus problem lol). anyways, great pedal~
I have 3 choruses at the moment, so yeah I definitely have a chorus problem. It's a great problem to have haha
@@ia5662 isn't it? which ones do you have?
I saw one in a shop a year ago for €15.00 and as I have a few Chorus pedals I was going to leave it. I walked out and half way down the street I did a U-Turn and ran back to get it. I'm glad I did, for this is a class pedal. I prefer it to the Boss CE-2 to be honest. It's a classic chorus sound that has it's own character. I love it. Nice demo!
Awesome! Yeah, this is a sleeper of a pedal, no one thinks of it when they think of 80's analog. It does sound very good, although the power supply I got started to get wonky and I was worried about electrocuting myself, so the pedal has been retired a bit. I love my CE-2 though, I have a silver screw model and it sounds fantastic. I think it's a little more subtle than the DOD, but still has the warmth.
I have all of the the four Boss Chorus pedals and I think they lack a certain kind of shine, I can't quite put my finger on it. The CE-2 is best for me at very low settings and this gives me a 70s slight flange-like sound but ever so subtle. The CE-3 is good in stereo, again turned down low. The CH-1 I don't hardly use at all and the CE-5 has too many controls which I don't like as it overcomplicates things, plus mine is the sterile digital version. The DOD has something they lack and I like it.
sounds great! nice find.
I put my fx65 on the output of above, have you ever tried? nice demo!
Not yet! I think it's for going stereo with 2 separate amps to get a big wall of chorus sound. Most chorus pedals have that function I think.
I use to have one, it really sounds good connected to two amps.
this or Line 6 Space Chorus?
I always say, play what you like and think sounds the best to your own ears. Don't let anyone else make that decision for you. However, in my own humble opinion, you can't beat the lushness you get from old analog chip chorus pedals like this DOD. Play them both and see what you like better (I know that's easier said than done with a vintage pedal - you can always sell it if you don't like it!)
🌈
The very first pedal i bought ... summer of 89 ... right before 9th grade ... oh lord ... learned u2 and the cult for the hottest stephanie in school ... god send me a time machine ... such soft lips
Haha - glad this pedal could stoke some romantic memories!
4:17 Hemisphreres haha
Godlyke power-all, powers 5 five pedals and comes with a boatload of adaptors including one for DOD.
Be nice if you kept the volume the same one second you can barely hear it and then the next it’s blasting so you don’t know what the Hells going on
I once had this beast. Can't find it anymore. Loved it on telecasters. I wanted to try it with my synths. If I remember right I used a KORG analog reverb with it.
LOVE that you brought up The Sundays. Gorgeous music they made~ 💙
They sure did! I loved that songwriting combo and his guitar tone was always so pure
would help if you could put the volume up or you must have a compressor on it thats why the volume is so low sorry but a naff video
I mic'd it straight on the amp but in post the volume dropped. You are still getting the actual richness of the pedal, it's just annoyingly low.
Ah! Great demo! I'm about to get one, but I'm worried about the power side of things. Why do you need to unplug the battery each time?
Any pedal is like that - it will drain a battery if you leave your guitar plugged into the input. It is so old it requires an AC source if you choose to plug the pedal in with AC power that is a 1/8th inch headphone style plug. Most power supplies these days have an adapter for that and can send power that way if you have a pedalboard setup. So you have 3 options: 9V, original power supply, or power brick adapter cord.
@@ia5662 Thank you so much! It takes 9V from any power supply too?
How much does the DOD FX65 need a power requirement (mA)?
I'm not exactly sure what it is, might be 18V, but it requires a 1/8th inch plug in adapter.
ianA Thank you!!!
Mine got ripped off! Still have 18v adaptor with large plug. I hope to find another soon.
This one or the Jacques (oldest version)?
So I had both, and I can firmly say the DOD is probably the way to go. The Jaques was cool, but I think this is more lush. It's just harder to get the power supply for it since it's an oddball one.
i like dod single pedals but this sounds crap or maybe its your setup i can hardy hear the thing
Sorry, olvidé decir, tocas muy bién. Saludos nuevamente.
thanks body.. i've made a decision now i saw yout video ... this pedal sounds great, good review
thanks glad you dig it!
works with a psa 9v with adaptor ac ?
It's got a 1/8th inch headphone style 9V plug - it's very unique in that sense. Some pedal boards/power supplies have adapters to accommodate these kinds of pedals.
@@ia5662 yeh, a have dod pds 2000, thanks for answer :))))
Wow only 33 bucks! Nowadays its over 100 bucks ☺
yeah I got it for a steal before people caught on
@@ia5662 I was checking your vid to see what it can do. It only just surfaced after 40 years so I actually own one! 😊
is 12v or 9v?
That's a great question - I honestly would have to check when I get home.
@@ia5662 thanks so much
That was for sale......got in the late 80s used a few times......🔥
Can u turn this into a vibrato by plugging an unused jack into the 2nd output? I think u can. I'd like to hear that demoed
That's a great question - I've never heard of that. The second output is for stereo and sending it to two different amps. Chorus that has the rate turned up sounds kind of vibrato-esque, but it's never going to be a vibratro. There are different oscillations happening in a vibrato whereas a chorus has more of a warbly, whereas I'd say a vibrato has more of a swirling sound. Hard to describe with words haha
@@ia5662 when I say vibrato, I just mean no dry signal. Just the effected signal. Which effectively is a vibrato. Should try it and see if it works that way. Might be good for getting a slow pitch oscillation as they are generally slower than vibrato pedals can go. Which I like. I don't think that all stereo chorus pedals can do this however. It has to be a stereo chorus where 1 output carries the dry signal, and the other the effected signal. I think sometimes the stereo is achieved in a different way
I have a very old boss multi effect pedal (I think the 1st one they did) and you can turn the chorus into a vibrato in the way I described (u can also do this with a boss ce3). It's not sooo different to the intended chorus sound. But definitely interesting useful sound
A lot of newer chorus pedals (like the Mr black one) are chorus/vibrato pedals and have this ability built in
As a matter of interest, a one spot adapter (9V center negative) with the phono converter plug (used for old EHX and DOD and Rats) works fine for me.
That's awesome to know, I had the GATOR power brick and it wasn't working for me unfortunately. I think some of the higher end ones like T-REX can do it though easily
Thanks man, def. dig it for the price for sure.
Sounds envelope filtery. Cool pedal.
I just picked up one of these, however the font is a little different and I am assuming it is the series after ( not the icebox) just curious if they sound the same?
I'm actually not sure, I just know that my particular model is all analog.
Hablas mucho ...
Thanks for the vid. Where did you find that power supply?
eBay, the land of everything.
Where did you find the AC Adapter? I've had this pedal for years and never used it because it eats batteries for breakfast.
I actually bought an original 80s DOD power supply from eBay. It's the genuine article. Mine still works with a battery, but I run a pedal board so I kind of needed it.
+Dillon Skye Supposedly it's 10v DC but 12v works fine, probably any one you have. You'll have to wire in a mini-plug though - just make sure sleeve is negative
Those police tones were lovely! I'm picking one up tomorrow. Does it need a special power adapter?
Thank you, it does need the power adapter, but it can still roll on 9V too. The power adapter looks like a 1/8 inch headphone jack. I guess that's the style of a lot of 80s pedals power adapters outside of BOSS, who got it right the first time. But I also think this pedal may draw more power than a BOSS, part of the magic, yet part of the frustration running it on a pedalboard since you'll have to either find a power brick that can handle this or simply run the extra power supply this requires.
ianA thanks so much for the reply Ian! All the best mate.
damn, but it's so difficult get one of this, right?
Biniru Textil No, I just bought one on eBay for 40 dollars. If you're in another country you may have to pay more but they're out there and not prohibitively expensive like certain old boss/MXR pedals.
yo lo tengo, suena de maravilla y es todo un tanque de batalla! Abrazos y muchas gracias!
Haha hell yes! It's definitely built well, thanks man, de nada!
Gracias a vos por el aporte hermano, abrazo!
Is it noisy?
Not particularly, sounds pretty good to my ears
Where did you find this? Im looking to get one but am not to sure how or where to find one in working condition.
Belethor eBay, where you should always check first!
+ianA Did you also find the adapter on Ebay?
Belethor Yes
what overdrive and tremolo were you using ?
It was a Danelectro Tuna Melt for tremolo and then an Ibanez TS-9 Tubescreamer for the OD.
thanks for sharing this ii remember i have one of this pedal before and the Dod attacker but i sell it
because boss pedals are famous
