About to do this to my 2001. Did a 97 Ranger a few years ago. Some basic procedure. Went to the Pick-N-Pull first to learn how the column came out before removing mine. Helps to see other cars already disassembled. Thanks for filming while working.
Thank you so much sir, about to swap mine tomorrow, i was waited 7 days for the part to come in during that time the Truck is sitting in front of my buddies place at a parking meter 20 minutes from where I live 😞 talk about stress finally I'll get my truck back tomorrow.... Thanks for the video Sir!! Sincerely 💪😊👍
For anyone interested. This job is 100 times easier if you just go ahead and remove the left side of the dash and gage cluster
Thank you for posting. I am in process with a 1995 F-150. I got the old one out. The shift cable end is mounted on the back side of the lever on the column. I have parts ordered from my local NAPA store. I bought a steering wheel puller from them too. I learned not to use the bushing that came with the puller. It got stuck in the wheel and i pretty much stripped the threads out of the wheel with the puller threads. It took a while to get that bushing out! The new parts are expected here in the am.
I'll check back with the install results. BTW, I have been unsuccessful getting the key housing removed from the column assembly. Not crucial since the key seems to be stuck in it.
Great video I hope you record your whole teardown and repair job video nextime. But very helpful video regardless thank you and keep up the great work.
Thank you so much!! Couldn't find anywhere how to take this appart and then after days lf search, I found you! You're awesome! Keep the videos coming!
This video helped out a lot. I had everything apart but didn't take that bolt all the way out
So that stop it from coming all the way out. Thanks alot for the help!
Yes sir thank you very much for your video, it was of alotta help for me, thank you for taking the time.
This a very hard job probably 8 hours
Thanks for the video saved me alot of time and frustration.
1:15 that little wire controls the shift indicator. It is very easy to break. Important to understand it so it doesn't get broken. 2:39 oh, he figured it out. 👍
Good job! Good video!
Thanks!
Chris FIX shows you how to repair broken piece with glue and 2 zip ties check it out on his channel. Very helpful good luck.
You sir are a life saver. Thanks for the video.
That’s the shift indicator cable that lets you know which gear you’re in on the selector
Really appreciate this video. God bless you.
you can fix the shift lever parts with it on the truck. I had to replace the cable on mine, but need to find out why the wheel moves up and down now.. Might just use parts from the colum on my econoline. Thanks for the video
Great explanation...
Great work
If you font got the key don't try to drill the detent its hardened ask me how I know break like you suggested
Great video!!
Question can that solenoid by the shifter gears for park prevent the truck from starting?
I have change the solenoid against the firewall under the hood with a new starter & now I’m using a screwdriver to start it with the same solenoid on the firewall!!
SomeXs it would start & someXs it won’t then I would have to use the screwdriver..
I don't think the column would do it, but the neutral safety switch on the trans might
Thanks Bud..
I have changed a column in a 2002 Ford F150 . The column came with key . The truck will not start. On the dash board it has Theft wrote. Anyone know what is wrong and I need to do?
Possibly not programmed key. Can you install the key section of the original?
also turn the key the pin will push in and ignition will come out. saw the end you got it XD
That trip wire is for shift indactor
How did you get the clock spring center when reinstalling the colum with the steering wheel on verry helpful video by the way
Been a while on this one. IIRC, I zip tied it so it wouldn't spool out and the just reinstalled it and cut the zip tie. There is quite a bit of slack so a turn one way or the other probably won't hurt it. Thanks!
I know I'm late but if anyone needs yo know. To remove the ign key cylinder you must have the key, insert and move to run position, then push ball detent (shown) in and the cylinder slides right out.
Do you know if a 2003 steering column of a cord expedition will fit my 2004?
Howdy. I'm not 100%, but i think it should. The body styles of the 03-4 are fairly similar and not like the 98-02. Thanks!
Got a 2003 Ford Explorer shifter handle broke off the pop metalder snapped do I have to replace the whole column and you did please get back to me Aaron
If I recall correctly, the shifter is attached with a pressed in pin. If the handle falls but the attachment at the column is OK. You should be able to push out the pin and just replace the handle. If the area on the column where the handle goes into its the part that failed, you probably need to do the column. I don't recall if the top of my head if that piece can be removed separately. Good luck. Thanks!
Did you have to reprogram the new column after you got in installed
Howdy! No. The unit in my 97 was pretty simple electronically so there was no programming required. I would guess that if you keep all the sensors around the key if you have a chip key, that it should work.
Very helpful
What state are you located? I have a 1997 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.4L with the same issue. I purchased a used steering column with key and the steering wheel but can’t find anyone willing to install it.
You know how to replace the actuator rod? Mine is broke and the ignition key just spins. Let me know of a video that explains it thanks
i have a 1999 ford e450 triton v10 6.8 litre shuttle bus i had to lower .my steering wheel to get to the solenoid assembly that shifts from park to .drive what a sommabitch took me all day to remove all the braces and unhook a million wires.theres no room.under my wheel to go from the bottom.ive made a few videos of it .but there slomo videos .thinking i knew what im doing this job cost me 200 in two parts to buy
Solenoid assembly what a nightmare to get to
very nice, i just finished an upper bearing replacement (that spring is a bitch) and a new shifter tube assembly on a 2003 f350 still has a little play (im sure another bearing maybe the lower) but with 270,000 miles it will pass inspection a least
Todd where did you get the bearing, i was just thinking about replacing mine
Replaced column, truck turns over but will not fire.
So I hired a guy to do this and the asshole didn't connect it to the thing that changes the needle when shift changing. So I have no idea if I'm on neutral or park or anything. He also didn't connect it to the thing for my turn signals or the horn. Do you have a video that shows like wiring for each of the things or can someone help me out?
That's unfortunate. The shifter needle is just the little spring up under the dash that would need to be reclipped to the hook on the linkage, so that's not too bad but it's a bit of a contortion to get to where you can see it. The horn could be the plug under the airbag to the clockspring, and the signals are probably the other plugs to the accessory stalk. There is a large screwed in connector under the column, but if that was not plugged in, nothing would work at all, like it wouldn't start. Hopefully it would just require pulling the covers off the column and checking the connectors. But it might require the airbag to be removed to see the horn plug. Good luck.
I have a 2000 expedition that needs a new steering column will a 2002 fit it
First thought is yes. F150 or expedition column of that year range should fit. Might need to move a sensor or two depending on your options.
So it may be Awhile later but I have bought A Barn Find Ford Explorer 2nd gen with the 4.0 V6 Automatik I wanna Get İt Running I don't have Keys but I wanna Get İt running and I think it has anti theft could you help me?
I can certainly try to give advice over the interwebs.
I got a 97 exposition and it has a pats system I think it has a box that’s a cm5000 I think it’s a alarm do u know if this is factory or aftermarket my security light keeps blinking someone tried to steal it can’t I just remove the security system
Howdy! The CM5000 module seems to be part of an older aftermarket Compustar alarm system. It should be able to be removed but I'd recommend trying to find the OEM instructions to know what to remove and what may need to be reconnected. Good luck!
How much was it at the pick a part do you remember??
I think a steering column is about $40 right now. Definitely with it if you can find a decent one.
Anybody knows the part number for the whole steering column? Think I have to replace mine been experiencing stiff steering already, thanks
I was unable to source a new column when I repaired mine. If your steering is stiff, you might also check the universal joint near the steering gearbox. I had that seize on my expedition and needed to replace it.
I want to replace both the lower and middle joints, dont really know which one is the culprit so migjt as well replace them both, thanks
my u joint is really tight, any suggestions?

Had that exact thing happen to my 03 Expedition. Best thing I can suggest is to source a replacement at a local you pull it yard. They're expensive. Thanks!
I hate you had to replace the whole colum. That bearing comes out and you can replace it with all new bearing and bushing without having to do the entire thing.
👍👍👍
What part inside the steering column locks the steering wheel when you pull the key out?
Howdy! I'm not 100% sure on that one as I didn't need to mess with it on mine. I would think it may be visible if you remove the key cylinder but I'm not sure.
It's a locking pin that position itself on the cylinder lock mechanism you access that by pulling steering wheel
@@aaronsrose not really steering wheel all the way. Down to lock. Cylinder
There is a green plastic retainer that is down in the hole where the key switch is, remove the plastic retainer, then you will see a round gear with a retainer on it , just pay attention and take pictures I did it you can too!! Also if you have a floppy steering wheel the part that tilts comes apart with removing 2 torx screws on each side you can replace back bearings and bearing in front , just make sure spring and c clip is installed all the way to second notch on colomn after bearing is installed , Google loose steering wheel and a foroun has bearing number , it's 28 bucks and has complete instructions in box
What tools do you use to remove it
Steering wheel needed a slightly special puller (you can borrow them at most parts stores) Other than that, normal metric stuff. Wrenches, sockets etc.
Took the steer clomem out and to clips fell out and not truck won't start when I put back in there. 03 ford expedition
I had to replace my column because I lost the key. On my 2nd column because my first replacement was the wrong year. Now it won't start, turn over or anything.
My only thought on this is maybe to check the continuity of the wires coming out of the big plug under the column when the key is turned. Also, do the gauges light up but it just won't turn over? If so, maybe you lost a starter fuse or relay in the swap?
Has anyone replaced the top bearing on these?
I thought about it, but it looked like a faff and I was able to find a decent replacement unit cheap. Thanks!
Just ordered bearing on ebay, will try to change it out this weekend.
Part -1992 UP Ford Mercury Lincoln Steering Column Upper Bearing Kit for Tilt/No Tilt
It won't put in park , got to put in neutral to start it
If you can look all the way to the front of the column, I think there are a couple bolts on the shift mechanism that loosen up and can impede the thing from going into park properly. If you can tighten them up it may fix the problem. Good luck!

im sorry you had to go through this bullshit to fix such a small issue. they purposley build vehicles tedious like this so customers give up from frusteration. build ford tough
