In 2022, I pulled a red and black prizm checkerboard SSP of Mac Jones, expressed it to PSA, graded 10, and immediately sold for around $2000. Latest sale on September 13 was $638. There's a reason I don't even try to collect football anymore. People are just stupid and Panini just sucks.
Upper Deck puts Gretz in a room with 3 or 4 rails and he signs all day long... there is a metric ton of his autos out there.

I feel like the majority of sneakerheads took off after cards started to bottom out. That's why the basketball market is down so bad. Probably a good thing.
Another storyline that also makes Gretzky cards alluring is the tie-in to Ovechkin chasing down Wayne’s all-time goal-scoring record into the 2024/25 season. The closer Ovechkin gets, the more attention on Ovechkin…. and the more attention on Ovechkin means more attention will come to Gretzky. This feels a little different to the ‘LeBron overtakes Kareem’ narrative as each Ovechkin goal will rachet up the tension.
And if Ovie falls short it will definitely further elevate Wayne's "greatest" status in the hockey world (not that he needs much IMO to maintain that).
As a non hockey collector higher end early 80s Gretzkys seem cheap as hell
@@Weezy10580 Gretzky's non-rookie 1980 and newer cards are definitely a bargain at the moment, prices having just recently fallen quite a bit. His rookie still isn't cheap, but considering how much he dominated the sport (arguably more than any other pro athlete in their respective sports) it can be said that it is also a bargain if looked at in that light.

@@Weezy10580 The OPC cards are holding value better, and I think they objectively look a bit better than the Topps. For a few years only OPC were making hockey cards (I think 82 and 83?), so you won't have a choice there anyway.
As a strictly hockey collector I can tell you there are dumb people jumping on the Bedard bandwagon that have no clue about hockey. People paying $4500 for a Team Canada card is just moronic. Granted it’s a high gloss out of 25 and graded PSA 10 but he literally has 5 cards in the set as well as tons of other inserts, autos, etc in both the 21 and 22 sets. Once his Young Guns comes out those cards will be a couple hundred dollars at the most.
I wonder how these financial advisors act when the government sets their sights on them.

In my humble opinion, buying PSA dual graded '58 Topps Jim Brown and '65 Topps Joe Namath cards decent holds for those who dabble in the vintage football market. In addition, I think the '35 National Chicle Bronko Nagurski card is a good hold if you can find one. Just my 2 cents on why I find value in certain vintage football cards.
This is why I only invest in WWE women autographed SGC or PSA 10 or BGS nine. Five cards those cards don’t seem to go down they rise in value
I enjoy your channel. With that said, the rule of "investing" in anything is pretty simple. Buy low, sell high. Generally speaking, a down market is the worst time to sell anything unless you absolutley need money. People who panicked and liquidated their 401k's during COVID lost a ton versus waiting it out. Down markets are buying opportunities. I personally don't understand the insanity with all the modern stuff and billion parralels. I only buy vintage and some modern players I like. I do think Gretzky autos are solid. Jordan, Brady, Gretzky, Kobe, etc. all feel safe from short-term market trends. Also, buying sports cards should be a hobby and fun. If people are banking on them being retirement plans then they need to get anothet job that pays more.
the fact Football is still down 30%+ and the season is in full swing should tell you everything you need to know about it being an "investment". Also I in fact DO make money selling Football cards, I buy low during May/June/July and sell high during the season at card shows, I do NOT sell online.. ever.
That's why I collect to keep and build sets. Cause I enjoy the hobby that way and don't mess around with selling, its too volatile right now.

People did the same thing in sports cards as they did in comics. Overpaid 2 years ago and now values are getting obliterated because they are not worth that

Cards up to and including 1985 are investments. When those cards were new, they were collected mostly for fun. Starting around 1985, new cards were primarily money-driven, highlighted by all the new subsets and variants. And starting sometime in the mid-2000s (2005-ish), it really got slot-machine-esque, where people started speculating, intentional limited editions, blah-blah-blah... No one gets excited about the player anymore, it's all about the 1/1, color, etc. You don't collect anymore. You speculate and day-trade.

I think Ohtani is a little bit of an outlier. His stuff is down 15% MoM but those cards have had such a good run. I hope they drop a lot more so I can snag one though 😂

I like Bedard and Fantilli, the new Blue Jacket draft choice, for prospects, but I also have had a strategy selling since the fight started between Fanatics and Panini. I went back to 1980 to the early 90's in both football and hockey. So far, so good. I've sold a few second year Gretzky cards, and in football, someone just cleaned me out with a 12 card purchase, of all my Joe Montana cards, and most of my other vintage 49ers. I think that with the Niners getting back to being dominant, and that new kid, Purdy, getting comparisons by the announcer s to Joe, it's making for great sales of both old and new 49ers. Just letting you know what I've seen recently, because for a good while nothing was working. Thanks!

Gretzky, like Howe signed everything and anything. Both gave a crap about fans and it seems they watered down their own market for signatures as they are overly prevalent. Both are also two of the best looking sigs in general

BTW, Geoffs' new shop is nothing more than a kids' casino. Look at Rob Veres. He hates breaking, and his shop is 95% warehouse inventory. He truly has the right idea. Even tried to give helpful tips to Geoff, but he didn't listen. If I want to go to a fancy card shop, I would just go to a large regional show. Try explaining to parents what breaking is. They would walk their kid right out of the store.
The Gretzky hot take might be a bit cooler than you think, specifically related to his autos...
He has A LOT of autos in the hobby, I mean (tens of?) thousands over the course of his career. They are VERY common, and only through the sheer will of his career/legend do they hold any value. I'm a collector and have one non-graded Gretzky auto, but several of other star players who sign less and/or have fewer signed sports cards. The prices you're seeing are a correction, not a dip. His most premium, low numbered patch autos will end up being the only of his auto cards to hold anything close to their current values. Those are the top 10% of his auto cards, the rest are moving down to be more in line with other hockey great autos (Jagr, Lemiuex, Howe, etc). I would also advise against Crosby and McDavid autos, they also have a lot in the hobby and demand is cooling for them as well (at premium prices).
They said the same about Kobe and Jordan autographs a few years ago. But write another 5 paragraphs for free telling how to spend my money

@@SportsCardShow Kobe died young, Gretzky's old and has been signing the entire length of his playing and post-playing career. Jordan's autos are limited due to his upper deck agreement. Those are not just bad examples, but you not realizing it before posting them and stepping to me about my suggestion being "off" is at the very least poor form, but certainly consistent with the ahole attitude you publicly convey (personae). Maybe shutup and listen for a change.

The great distraction from real investments... 95%-99% of us never had a chance at these chase cards. And many folks lost generational wealth following these clown influencers. Ebay, must've paid him millions for the hundreds of millions he helped bring to their business

Agreed! Especially the 2023 Select hobby. That one has been absolutely fun to rip. I got auto hits of old school wrestlers like Jerry Lawler and Cowboy Bob Orton on my first box. The 2nd box....a Brian Knobs auto and then an auto of one of the new faces I never seen before which was Scarlett. ❤❤❤

How do we explain Alperen Sengun cards flying off the shelves for a huge premium? Just watched a rookie pink swirl auction at $340 yesterday while looking for some all time greats to snatch up! Who the Hellen Keller is Alperen Sengun?? And why are his rookie cards fetching that kinda money?? Is that someone to put on the purchase list?

Interesting charts to fit your narrative. Do this video in three months when basketball & hockey is in season for when active players are at the peak. Why only show the last three months of Jordan & Kobe stuff and not the last two or three years like active players. I don’t disagreed about the down market but be more truthful when comparing retired legends to young players. I do concurred the point that consumers are overpaying for Brock Purdy like he has already surpassed Joe Montana’s legacy. Let the career of these young guys finish before comparing their prices. It’s not a fair comparison. SCR should compared keyed card of Will Grier vs Kyler Murray from their rookie season to present day, and then you’ll get more YT views.
