There is a nudibranch that devours pulsing xenia. I know because it came in with a frag. It blends in and has an appendage on it's rear that looks like one of the pulsing xenia polyps.
Hey bud just bought some xenia..I honestly think it stops pulsing because its in a high flow area...your coral tank is very mild....I know in my tank it pulses if flow is very low....high flow it doesn't need to pulse...I guess...imo..cool coral tho
I purchased one of these from you for my first coral in my tank....it pulsed beautifully for about a week and then slowly stopped (mostly), of course, I think I might be killing the zoa I also purchased so I'm sure I'm doing something wrong! Your store is awesome and corals are stunning! Can't wait to buy more someday when I have it figured out lol
When my n’s and p’s are low it stops or slows way down pulsing. I think it has to do with water quality. These things pulse like crazy in a dirty tank. Just my take
Great video, in my experience, (30+ years in the hobby, owned an aquarium store in Los Angeles back in 1995) xenia will pulse to help gather food. So, in a low flow tank or area, it will pulse more than in a high flow area, i.e. not much need to pulse.
Quick question?🙋♂️ You said if it’s attached to a frag plug it’ll slide up and let go, which I can attest to that because mine has always died. My question is how is that it’s on a frag plug when purchased? And also on your video as well 🤔
I have a fluval Evo, so I don’t have space for a island. I bought gsp when I was new to saltwater and I can’t get it off the rock, it just sticks on and I want it to me on the back wall. Don’t know if I’m gonna end up impulse buying a xenia and have it take over a large portion of my tank. The biggest problem with the gsp is that it’s at the top so it doesn’t look that big.
Mine turned microscopic and vanished when my water became too clean. Seems more common that fragbox viewers keep tanks that are too clean to keep this coral!
I would love to know what is the name of that dark blue fish with similar patterns as a swallow tail but in blue, (in the tank with all the chromis) it’s a great looking fish
I’ve seen a ton of talk about these lately in the coral keeping fb groups, and I’m starting to really want some but I’d have to do some rock rescaping in my tank to accommodate a new rock for them 😭 also had no idea my Kenya tree will do this, I’ll be looking for babies in the future
This stuff is like a weed to a gardener. If your thinking of keeping sps further down the line do not introduce this into your reef. And that goes for GSP aswell.
@@josh_9266 thank you for this. I recently purchased a Xenia, put it in the tank and it withered away and died just 2 days later. My Nitrates and Nitrites are zero.
If you want to get rid of it, just use a tweezer and pull it out, eventually after a few times, you'll get rid of it. They are like a carpet almost. Problem is once out of the water, they are really hard to see.
The ONLY frag I've got from you thus far that has died on me. It literally shrank into nothing over the course of a few days. Torch, frogspawns, Monti, digis, brains all doing great... But I melted a Xenia?! Wtf.
Bro I have mushrooms that just give the fck up. We’re in low flow spots and then just slimed up and then slowly withered away to nothing while I was waiting for them to catch on to something. So don’t feel bad for a Xenia dying. Mine stopped pulsing trying so hard to get my nitrates up but it’s not happening 😅. Good luck with the hobby bro
I can relate. Put a xenia in my tank and it died in a couple days. My mushroom and zoa which are in the same tank are thriving! Wtf? I've been told my water is too clean. I use rodi water, nitrate and Nitrites both at zero.
I have heard in really low nutrient tanks, the shock of the difference in water parameters from the move is what causes them to melt away. Nothing is 100%, but xenia and gsp are close.
Well that’s something I searched and searched and couldn’t find a reason as to why they “melted” away. I’ve read that in very stable and clean tanks Xenia stop pulsing I’m going threw it right now I have so many amphipods that nothing can build up it’s annoying really. I had a pair of clowns but I was dumb and used Reefroids and my aquarium isn’t really big enough for that says my lfs we ruled that as cause of death. So now I have a cleaner bunch of hermits snails etc and no nitrates at all last test was 5 ppm skipped water changes for two weeks and it was still 5 ppm started tossing food in another two weeks later still 5 ppm. I need fish 😅 saving for longfin main mochas.
Fair enough!we do have some customers with similar experience. They iether take over or melt nothing in between lol must be some limiting nutrients in the water
@@fragboxcorals it must be because I went through so many frags of Xenia trying to keep them alive, it’s my favorite coral and I couldn’t keep it alive, I recently added some to my tank about 2 weeks ago and it’s finally not melting lol, idk what’s different honestly
I’m in the research phase of setting up a reef tank and your channel has helped me a lot. I never miss an episode. Thank you.
Best advice I’ve gotten is to master the basics, go slow, and let nature take its course!
I started the hobby 4 months ago. Check out brs 5 minute videos as well!
Dis you set up the reef tank yet
I think it pulses to improve water flow around it. When I had powerheads blowing towards it, they didn't pulse.

Mine always pulse in low flow. The higher the flow=less pulsing.
Seems logical... If it doesn't have enough flow then it makes it's own.
What does best I'm higher flow? I feel I have all my corals on one side of the tank lol
If your watching this keep your nitrates at 4-6 ppm to keep these things happy. To clean of a tank and they melt away

How often do you have to trim it?

@@SANKEConstrictors not really! But I'm still trying and haven't shut the tank down yet at least

they stop pulsing when theyre in high flow, they pulse because they're trying to increase flow and remove waste
How often do you have to trim the xenia?
Where is your shop. It’s Impeccable
I just got mine from shipping and it's completely limp and closed. I gave it a day and it still looks the same, some head even came off. Is it dead?

I will probably buy this as my first coral. Looks amazing.
Crazy. I have not been able to keep Xenia of GSP

What should your water paramiters be IE temperature ,calcium etc
Thanks for the story. Very nice.
I love pulsing xenia, but if one really wants/needs to kill it off or back place a fungia plate coral next to it. The plates sting will destry xenia.
Or just frag it and give it away/trade it with local reefers
The less flow the more it pulses :) very high flow and it virtually stops pulsing
Not mine it does the opposite??
Bought mine yesterday and it’s not looking good, it was so pretty at store and look at it this morning it’s not looking great hope it’s gonna make it
What lights and channel settings are you using ?
Flow is a really big effect on them higher flow they wouldn’t pulse as much with no flow they pulse to move and filter through the water
Did they make you edit out fragging the zinia?
My Xenia did not start pulsating until I got the phosphate down below .30.
How do you get it to attach to substrate without floating
seem to me that high flow water stop the pulsing xenia from pulsing in my tank.
In my case.. they stop pulsing is when nitrate is zero or very very low.... Also they will start to shrink and die.....
That's probably why mine died :(
Mine turned microscopic and vanished when my water became too clean. Seems more common that fragbox viewers keep tanks that are too clean to keep this coral!
I actually use this as a sign that my nitrate is getting low and need to start dosing nitrate....
@@katchupoy01 sorry, for a second there I thought you said you dose nitrate.
@@jasoncolliver3648 you are correct sir. I dose neonitro and neophos.... My system has an issue for being zero reading on both...

Everytime I get a pulsing xenia it always dies on me. Idk what I do wrong
Flamethrower on order to eradicate!!!!- 😂
This coral is a death sentence in nano tanks lmao
Not true, I have a Xenia island in my 16 gallon Biocube - the dirtier your tank the more it’ll thrive

Blue reef chromis

You said it yourself! They pulse in low flow environment to increase water movement across them. High flow no pulsing low flow lots of pulsing

I would add zoas to the list
If the water is too acidic they stop pulseing and retract enough where they don't want to.
How can I kill it ? If I cut it down it just re- grows
You will need to remove the rock and bleach the rock. Research how to bleach rocks on youtube.
Het your nitrites and nitrates to zero. They hate super clean water. They will shrink and die.

Dunno why they didn't answer it but I'm pretty sure those are clove polyps
Blue wave hand Xenia is called it’s not rare tho
Nice! my secret...put it in the tank and forget about it. lol ;)
Pulsing xenia pulses because of it being a filter feeder
You say it's easy I love it an have tried it lots of times it always dies
I got it twice and suddenly just die. I have no idea about that
Me too. It got smaller and smaller till it vanished. My theory is over polished water / lack of nutrients.
Check nitrates... They don't like zero nitrates....
I got rid of all of it in my tank. Nobody in my area wanted it so i just threw it out. It was out of control.
I have some frags. 10 bucks for big frags
