The RIGHT WAY to Frag Pulsing Xenia (and maybe other fleshy soft corals too!)

- I thought I had a plan.... It’s one thing to trim corals like this in order to control them, but another thing altogether to try and create well-mounted frags to trade at the LFS. I learned a lot from this experience. See what you think!

Cindy, I've done this many times & turned in all the frags to my LFS for store credit. The easiest way is to take a small rubberband & go around the frag disk with the stem of the xenia under the rubberband. You can remove the rubberband in about 4 to 6 days. Works really well everytime & is super easy.

@@Reefgrrl Thanks for your previous video regarding rubberbands. I wonder if I had a better quality rubberband cuz I've never had any adverse effects, but good to know regardless. Thanks Cindi.
You probably did - I don’t know if it’s possible to even find high quality ones these days. 🤔
I like the method you used. Years ago when i had Xenia, I would cut them and use a tiny rubberband to hold down Xenia for a couple of days and the majority of them would attach. Xenia funded my tank for several years. Like you said the LFS almost always wanted Xenia. 👍
It surprised me how much I got for them. I’ve accumulated quite a lot of store credit from frags - planning to use it for the next build.

A lot of people will knock xenia, but after all these years I still enjoy watching it pulse and as you've said LFS will always take it because they can always sell it. I've probably made 1000s of frags over the years. These days I can probably get them to stick maybe 60% of the time with just glue and plugs. They really need no flow at all for several hours. Instead of a basket I will use a water tight container and keep it above the water line so it's resting in the tank but not getting any flow at all. If I had any course sand I would try your technique. My main colony grows on the glass and I can usually get some coraline off with it and then glue the coraline.
I knew I’d need to decrease flow, hence the basket. But it only partially worked. At one stage, I left a half-dozen sitting in water, on my dining room table for 4 hours, hoping they’d stick themselves down but even walking across the floor nearby was enough to disturb the water ever-so-slightly, and that made them move. I thought it would be easy because I’d done it once before, with a single branch I removed from the rocks - it stuck itself down within an hour. Not so much with these though. 😂😂 But just dropping them straight onto the sand and having only a tiny bit of flow, did the trick and really was easy. And I was very surprised at how much I got for them at the LFS so I’d do it again if necessary. That’s good to know about the coralline. 👍🏻
I always throw them in the frag section of my sump. When I need frags they have pebbles or sand attached... than I glue them! Great video
Thanks Kevin!
great xenia fragging lesson from my favorite REEFGRRL
Thanks Carlos! Thanks for watching! 👍🏻
Thread & needle through the stalk.... then glue the 2 bits of thread to the frag plug. Either way, quick success. Your tank looks fresh & clean, ReefGirl ! 😊🎉
Tried it - that stuff is SLIPPERY lol. Thanks for watching! 👍🏻
20 frags :O - that is amazing. I do like this lovely coral. I have a white fluffy variety which i would like to grow on the back wall of my tank. Great for nutrient uptake i hear as well!
I’ve heard that too, that it consumes nitrate. I think the reason I got the 20-ish frags is that the stick-on success rate was 100%. 😁 Which is why it’s the RIGHT way to do it! 😂😂
Really good informational video. I never knew the best way to frag xenia, but now i do👍👍👍
Oh man, I came THIS close to calling it “How to Frag Xenia the Right Way” 😂😂😂 you have no idea.....😁
@@Reefgrrl you totally should have lolol
Changed it! Let’s see if it brings out the haters, lol....😂
Very interesting, thank you!
That's awesome!! I will have to try this. I usually just stick rubble in between the Xenia colony and let it to the walking haha.
That’s what I was kind of hoping would happen but I needed to remove them from the area because they were starting to climb the rocks. Great idea though!
What an idea thank you 😊 great vid as always 😃👍🏻
Thanks Paul! 👍🏻
Thank you 🙏
Great way to frag Xenia👍
Right? I’ll definitely do it again. 👍🏻
Great video, I use an elastic band across the branching bit of xenia to hold it to the plug till it bonds, same with kenya tree

@@Reefgrrl that's rough, I must've been lucky before, I'll have to find a new plan
Lol, or use good quality rubber bands not from the dollar store....🤷♀️
That’s good information great video
Thanks for stopping by T! 👍🏻
Very informative, 👍
So cool
LOVE THIS VIDEO! THANKS :-)
new sub.
Thanks for the feedback, and the sub!
Elastic band video 👍
That was a brilliant video, my Xenia’s are small and rarely pulse, I was told because my water isn’t dirty enough,, it that really true, that they like dirty water ?
I believe so. The Phosphate and nitrate in Mollywood are always on the high side (0.1 and 25ppm) and the Xenia do very well in there.
Reefgrrl thanks for your reply 👍, strange, because my phosphates are the same but my nitrates have just come down to about 20, they were about 40, my own fault, I renewed all my filter sponges in my canister filter yet Kenya trees are getting bigger and bigger
Hi Cindy could I dip the xenia frag in iodine to help it heal looking forward to next Saturday thanks tony
I wouldn’t - they heal rather quickly and don’t seem to suffer infections, from what I’ve seen. 🤷♀️
Olá parabéns pelo vídeo gostaria de saber se a parte que fica na base central se regenera ou more.
Oi, sim, se você está falando sobre a base deixada para trás na rocha. Vai crescer novamente.
@@Reefgrrl muito obrigado 😀
What is the purpose of using a plug? They just look so unnatural to me, when aquascaping
I agree. They’re for the LFS, so the frags can be organized and displayed uniformly in frag systems. I do my best these days, to remove frags from plugs as much as possible.
I just use super glue. Gorilla worked fine for me.
Firsties!
CONGRATULATIONS! 🎉🎉💥💥🎉🎉 😂
😆
The right way to frag it is to cut it off and throw it in the garbage.
LOLOLOL! But it would be quite literally, throwing money away if you can take to the LFS! 😂
