We always love it when UA-camrs come to our hometown. We enjoy seeing other peoples views of our beautiful city. Pollywog, by the way. Did traverse the Suez Canal twice in Summer!
Shellback. USS Enterprise 1972. King Neptune's belly had aircraft axle grease. WHAT A MESS! Great memories! Thank you both for your service to our great nation!
Spent a yard period in a floating drydock aboard the USS Robert A Owen's in 1979 with Hurricane David. Spent a lot of time at the ammo piers onloading and Offloading.
Navy brat here; dad was on the USS Hancock in Westpac in the early 60s. Circa '79 we saw his ship come into Pensacola, and I'm sad to say I don't know what ship it was. But we were so excited watching him dock, which took forever it seemed. All dressed up in dress whites, it was a sight to see in person, and as a kid. He (we, lol) retired in Maryland after 21 years. Then I worked for a bubble head for a bit- I enjoyed his stories, which were much different from the aircraft carrier stories. Thank you both for your service. Love y'all's videos.
Oh and BTW, there's a San Diego Web Cam that is awesome. I just watched the USS Nimitz come and go earlier this month. It'll getcha choked up. (I've watched many vessels; they have a Navy playlist on their channel.) Fair winds... ⚓🌊🇺🇸
Grew up in Charleston and graduated Summerville H.S. Joined the Navy to see the world, so of course my first two subs were homeported in Charleston. The place is so full of history and most folks who live there have no idea. Lots of great camping and fishing down there. I am just a polywog as my boats never crossed the Arctic Circle or Equator. Thank you both for sharing your experiences in the Navy. Oh, my son graduates Marine Corps Boot Camp in San Diego in 2 weeks. So proud of him!
Here in CT we have an Air Museum with lots of aircraft are on display. It’s very cool hearing recordings of pilots communications on the overhead speakers. Charleston has so much history. Thank you for sharing.
My youngest son, 26, is moving there tomorrow! He met a girl just over a year ago on Isle of Palms, and now he will be living in Mount Pleasant! Thanks for your videos! I've been looking up camping spots all over SC! God Bless!!
Spent time in the $hithooks when we moved signal in Kuwait in ‘91 Desert Storm and Shield. I think I still have sand in both ears. Thanks for your service to both of you.
Golden Shellback! USS Carl Vinson 1984. A6 pilot, also flew A4 and A7. PS…. The “target wire” is the #3 wire! Perfect landing gets you a 3 wire. Great video shipmates!
Charleston is my favorite city too. We have realitives that live there and we visit them often. So much to see and do! The best way to see the city is take one of the horse and buggy tours. It is slow enough to see and hear what you want to go back and tour!
On October 2, 1986, I became a Trusted Shellback onboard the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70). At the time, I was working in the XO's Admin (X1) as a young Yeoman Seaman (YNSN). Best days / times of my life!
Great video. Thanks for your Service and for posting this video. We visit Charleston a lot because all of our kids and grandkids live there. We live just up the road in Columbia. Safe travels.
Golden Shellback, Blue Nose, Order of the Rock (Gibralter), and two trips through the Suez; ETCM(SS/SW/AW) Retired. I've lived in the low country for a total of 20 years now and seen a lot of UA-cam vids of the area but yours is the most thorough and hits the best of the best of things to see and do. Everyone misses out on showing the slavery past of Charleston. While it can be disturbing, it needs to be viewed as part of historical Charleston -- it adds context to the stately homes and plantations which show the elegance of the area. Bravo Zulu to all hands.
Another great video, folks! We intend to visit JRB Charleston at the end of September, so I watched this video again to get some ideas for things to do while there. BTW Phil, you want to catch the 3 wire on a carrier deck. The 1 wire is scary! 😅 Thanks for a great video!
My husband and I were both stationed in Charleston. We got married on Folly Beach in 1988 when there was nothing but beach and a Holiday in there. We are both shellbacks.
My Dad said if you want to fly join the Navy that is what he did, flew all over the world. The doctors measured him when he went in and told him since he fits he fly's.
Ahhhh, a Trusty Shellback 🇺🇸. As a Jarhead, you Squids treated me right when we were “inspected” at the equator in March of ‘95 when we left Mogadishu 🇺🇸
Stacy and Phil, thank you for your service and for your continued support for veterans. I'm not a "Shellback", BUT I am a "Bluenose" - EM1(SS) 1972 - 1978, which I believe is an even smaller club. I am disappointed you didn't mention that "Bad Boy" off the stern of the Yorktown. Did you tour the USS Clamagore while you were there?
Well guys I’m sitting here in Grand Haven MI about 3 rigs down from the other Phil and Shar. Today was the first really nice day we’ve had. You guys should have been here to share the experience. Charleston looked like fun. Keep the good stuff coming.
Great video. I was first stationed at Charleston AFB in 1990. Retired from CAFB in 2009. If you want a really nice military campground it called Joint Base (Air Force/Navy) Charleston Short Stay. Located in Monks Corner on Lake Moultry. Its about 25 miles away from Charleston Air Force Base.
I am a shellback I'm also a bluenose and have the Panama canal and suese canal certs. I loved my time in OUR Navy As a Tin Can Sailor. Bravo Zulu for the work y'all are doing. Maybe one of these days I'll figure out how to join your other platforms lol I don't even know if I said that right. But I watch y'all must every week when you have a new post.
One of my fave movies is “The Final Countdown” USS Nimitz goes back to just before Pearl Harbor attack in 1941. Under Siege is good too. Though I am Army and love a couple of those, such as The Green Berets with John Wayne.
Thank you for this. I live only 4 hours away and have been near Charleston but haven’t been able to really visit. I’m retired Army so I might check out the fam-camp. I actually lived in a few FA camps early in my career. Probably stayed a total of 2 years id guess.
My dad was a "member of the Royal blue nose."? He can't remember the actual name. ( He was in the Arctic.) And he was a Polly Wag. I had to call him after seeing this video. He told me about the garbage chute and kissing the big belly. He was in the Navy in the early 60s. He was on ship when President Kennedy came on during the Bay of Pigs ordeal. My Dad also picked up an astronaut, I think Buzz Aulden. I shared this video to FB so he could watch it. Thanks for this.
Golden Shellback here!, my Grandfather was also stationed on the Midway in the early 60s, I have his cruise book from 1962 on the Midway… I f you like Base’s that have great history and RV parks next time your in FL trying out Camp Blanding
Enjoyed your video! We haven’t been to Charleston yet, we need to put in on our list. Larry will enjoy visiting the Yorktown. I guess once you have served on a aircraft carrier it’s in the blood 🤣😂. Safe travels 😊❤️🇺🇸
No matter how many times my father-in-law who was in the Navy tried to teach us we still can't do it. LOL! Looks like you both had such a wonderful time. Thank you for your service.
Charleston Naval Hospital was my last duty station and hubby was at the Air Force Base there. Shellback 1993 sub tender USS Holland. Thanks for the memories of that crossing! Charleston was our best base!! We loved it there!! ❤️
Shellback, 1984, USS Sterret (CG-31). Thanks for the vid on Charleston - one of our major destinations when we get to the point where we're able to spend more time on the road.
I did the shellback as a Marine, on the USS Shreveport. We were EOD, so we had some yellow radiation suits with orange gloves.... So, my buddy and I donned these yellow suits with hoods and taped the gloves to the hoods on the top and the chins, so we looked liked chickens!!! HA HA needless to say we got beat...
The museum on the slaves quarters was extremely sobering. As far as Shellback or Pollywog? I was neither. I served later in life as a civilian puddle-jumper, doing search and rescue. Mom, was dead set against my serving at all. I wish I would have told her then, too bad. Thank you both for your service. I need to put Charleston on my visit list. Thanks for the video.
Memories! Stationed at NAVHOSP CHASN 1988-1990. Survived Hurricane Hugo in that Hospital. When the Ship Yard was open it was a Navy destination for sure!
We always love it when UA-camrs come to our hometown. We enjoy seeing other peoples views of our beautiful city. Pollywog, by the way. Did traverse the Suez Canal twice in Summer!

Great slice of why America is the still greatest country on the planet! Thank You for sharing it with us.👍🇺🇲
Spent time in the $hithooks when we moved signal in Kuwait in ‘91 Desert Storm and Shield. I think I still have sand in both ears. Thanks for your service to both of you.
From one Shellback to another..Bravo Zulu. I did my initiation on board the USS Ticonderoga CVS 14 back in April, 1972.
