My dad had this exact Cherokee. Same year, color, engine, four doors, everything. I remember trying to decipher the Japanese writings on the keep with my siblings. So many memories 😭😭
So funny!
These were also sold in the UK and Australia, as well as LHD for Europe. A diesel was offered that you couldn't get in the US. Interestingly, production continued in China until at least 2014 and some of the unique body parts are interchangable. The nice thing about importing this instead of some other weird JDM car is that parts are available at any parts store or junkyard. The only thing that can kill an XJ is rust. If the owner wants to restore it it's easy.
The lights are the easiest way to identify an export XJ. Every picture I've seen of an export Cherokee has the front sidemarkers by the headlight a saturated orange color and the turn signal is sometimes colored to match. The corner lights here look like aftermarket clear corners. The light above the front wheel is a turn signal which most export markets require. The taillights have four sections (five if you count the reflector) and no sidemarker. USDM pre-facelift Cherokees have two large sections of red over amber with inset reflectors and reverse lights. Export lights are stacked brake, reverse, reflector, turn, rear fog with the whole body colored red. Post-facelift export Cherokees also have five sections in the taillights and are stacked with brake, turn, reverse, reflector, and a large rear fog.
Hey Zac, I've been watching your videos for a while and have enjoyed every single one of them. There's just one thing I would like to see that you go more in depth in. It would be great to hear more about the driving characteristics of the car/how the car drives. Other than that, your videos are amazing so keep it up!!
I agree a little more about the driving experience would be amayzing
Love to see a review on a tempo/topaz, laser/daytona, and a chevy citation, great work really enjoy the car reviews
Two things I like about this channel:
The witty remarks.
The accuracy of the history presented.
👍👍👍
I like it, thank you for the video... I'm surprised to see headrests on the back seats, though. Also, I didn't see the spare tire mount in the back...
As a sidenote, I used to work at the XJ plant, and had the privilege of helping put quite a few together, and one job was pulling them off of the line for alignment, before they hit the test track. I always enjoyed the rhd and they were usually manual, very few automatic...
Good review of the JDM Jeep Cherokee, Zack!
I really enjoyed it so much. Also, TIL that American built cars sold in Japan are exempt from the 25 year rule.
Huh, I remember seeing this on marketplace and almost buying it, cool review!
I had 86 2.8V6 manual. My first "love" :)
Cherokee door handles and rear tailgate somehow resembles the 90s Volvo stationwagons back in the day.
When I was in my teens, I tought JDM standed for "Japan Drift Motors". because everytime I searched JDM cars, it was usually drifting cars.
It is like 80s Honda dashboard and electronics with really quality vintage seats
Really love these jeeps dad always had one at a point he had 4 all usa tho. Would like to hear more of the store bebind this jeep
This Jeep and the Toyota Cavalier are just some of the coolest American JDM cars IMHO.
No "Death Wobble" when driving? Impressive!
In 2002 my dad got a 91 Jeep Cherokee with a 4.0 automatic basically like what you have here. The only thing I don't recognize is the Amber strip above the hatch. I can say that those Jeeps handle like a sports car there is times where I push the envelope performance going around a turn on dry roads they have three shocks for tire and then in the back they have two shocks and a leaf spring if my memory serves me correctly very stable vehicle. And that 4.0 even though it's under 200 horsepower it does get up and go. Our neighbor at the time had a 5-speed manual version and even ripped even better. Thanks for the video .
Ps. Wasn't from Japan.
Driving Jeeps over 100 mph is scary. Sports cars actually handle good at those speeds
Never thought I’d here jeep an jdm together
If you want to see something trippy, look up Mitsubishi Jeeps. They had a license to produce the CJ-3B and eventually made a four-door Willys Jeep Wagon-looking variant.
What an interesting story!
What type of 4X4 system dose it have?
So it the idea that this is cheaper than a USDM Cherokee?
Aside from some of the cool things like indicator lights it seems to be more trouble than a normal LHD version
I have a American lhd jeep of this year
lol for some reason YT decided to put 1:50 in the preview when u hover on the thumbnail so it looks like you are reviewing a Mazda 3
Please do a Pontiac Fiero!
So neat
Cool😀
them ling longs but lit jeep tho
standard headrests in the rear because of international export laws. US domestic laws did not require headrests in the rear even though there was enough research to show rear headrests are essential for rear end collisions. Why was it not made law in the US when in the 1990s rear headrests were law among developed countries? interests groups and politicians!!
90% of car fails the fat Bottle test 🙌🏼😂
Wow I wonder if it’s more reliable haha.
A Jeep Cherokee, and it's JDM??? My dreams have come true.
西武自動車販売株式会社
Seibu Motor Sales Co., Ltd.
That is a jeep
I love that generation of Cherokee.
Yet to be a pedant, the word domestic implies local manufacture. This is not a JDM car. Sorry man
You're not being pedantic. Just unnecessarily splitting hairs. But it's all how one interprets the word domestic. No need to get into semantics, just enjoy the video and the fact that its purpose is to entertain.
it is jdm. japanese domestic market. not japanese domestic manufacture
@@dirtyasianmafia2310 I'm aware. Hence my emphasis on the way the word domestic modifies that which comes after.
The domestic market, also known as the internal market or home market, is where goods and services are bought and sold within the borders of a country.
For example, a Honda Accord made in Marysville Ohio and exported to Japan is not a JDM product. It's intended point of sale is not in the same market as the one in which it is produced.
3:45 337k km is 211k miles! I bet this was bought by a us army service person. since it would cost so much to drive it over there in japan!
