I’ll pray for your best outcome but, I know you will make the best of whatever that might be. Hi, Makayla Oct 2021 was my 40th year of living as a C5-6 quadriplegic. You have started on a new journey with many twists and turns; keep a positive attitude! Much will change; you will continue to grow more independent. You will look back in five years; much of what you are doing now will look much different. You probably will no longer need compression socks or a belly band to maintain your blood pressure. You will not need as much assistance from others. I encourage you to pursue learning to drive one of the best things I have ever done. Just a little about me I am married, have two children, I work, and drive by myself most times. I wish you the very best. David

Not saying anyone has to be happy that they got a spinal injury, just saying that life can be pretty dang awesome even when it looks nothing like you pictured.

@@karyndewit193 It’s not unusual. If a person’s spinal cord is severed, there is no chance of recovering function. However, if the spinal cord is injured in a less serious way, it can swell or just be damaged. People who have this type of injury have a good chance of recovery. In the video, she describes how she regained partial use of her hands. It’s the same basic idea with legs.

I’m so happy to hear that! Do you remember a contestant on Dancing with the Stars who had been a quadriplegic? Like your mom, it took YEARS of work to recover, and doctors told her “if you have not recovered function by now, you won’t.” She refuses to believe them and continued an unbelievable PT regimen for a long time (I want to say 2 years) after they told her it was hopeless. One day she felt a muscle twitch in her leg. Fast forward to winning medals for swimming in the Paralympics, then total recovery. Now, you would never know it happened by looking at her. Hey! I’m a 22 year old college student getting ready to go out into the work force, and it can be scary. It’s a big transition to go from a life of academia to the real world. Seeing you and your videos made all my anxiety dissipate: what you are experiencing is so much more complex and difficult than what I am, and your positivity is contagious. When the world is so dark, seeing such a ray of light is so refreshing. You’re an inspiration to me. Sending love!

I would disagree with comments saying you are inspiring because you are strong and brave. Because I think the most inspiring thing about you is your positivity. Not a lot of people can relate to your story because its yours and everyone's different, so even if it makes me think i can be more self-confident in my insecurities seeing how you are still happy in that difficult time, I think the best part of you is how (even if you may have very hard and sad days) you share how staying positive, smiling is always the first step in every cure to get better, physically or mentally. Thank you

Seriously so impressive considering how young you are especially and how difficult it must be to go from being so active/athletic to suddenly not being able to. It's very inspiring! You are such a beautiful person in every way! I hope you continue to recover and get stronger, but I have no doubts you will make the most of life and do great things. Also your family seems AMAZING I know you already know this, but yall are SO lucky to have each other. I wish everyone had that kind of love and support. It really makes all the difference.

I was recently in an accident and needed a total hip replacement quite young (32). I struggled with this for quite a while as the surgery was done abroad (accident happened in Africa). When I got home the surgeon here said that he would not have given me a total hip replacement and would have tried screws first. I went through a lot emotional turmoil with this and obsessive thoughts due to my OCD. I felt robbed of my hip and doomed to definite future surgeries. But your video popped up on my feed and it has really helped to give me perspective and encourage acceptance of my current situation. Although my issue was traumatic for me, I need to put it into perspective. At least I'm alive and breathing, like you. Your attitude is so inspirational, I am going to take a leaf out of your book. Thank you for spreading your positivity, it's infectious and has helped countless people to see the positive in their own situations, just like you have. xx

A few years ago I was hit by CFS/ME which has left me almost completely bedbound and housebound. Prior to getting sick I was a marathon runner, enjoying a successful career in teaching, a job I loved, and was a very outgoing and sociable person who was rarely at home. You are obviously dealing with far, far more severe issues than I am, but a lot of what you were talking about here really resonates with me. Taking things one day at a time, trying to focus on the positives rather than the negatives, trying to learn the lessons that a major life-changing event brings along with it. Having said all that, your strength and positive attitude at such a young age is truly remarkable and truly inspiring. It took me years to begin to accept the changes to my life now, which included going off the rails many times, whereas you seem to be at peace with things after only a few months. Your remarkable strength shines through the screen, and I'm glad you're surrounded by such an incredible family to help pick you up on the inevitable bad days. Your words in this video will have provided so much inspiration so many people around the world, including me over here in the UK, and I just want to thank you for sharing your story with us.

Not trying to make this a competition. Your daily struggles are far harder than mine. My whole life I wanted to join the military (dad was a 22-yr USAF soldier). I studied all the hard math and sciences to get an appointment to the Air Force Academy, to get my dream job of being a pilot. Then January 18 of my junior year in high school I was diagnosed with type-1 diabetes. My immune system backfired and killed off the insulin producing cells of my pancreas. You cannot live without insulin. No amount of natural honey, cinnamon, okra water, or any other type of ooky-spooky new age medicine will ever change that. But literally overnight my life changed forever. Now almost 38 years later, I'm still here. It is a constant 24/7 struggle to keep blood sugars in line, and it has most certainly limited my career choices. You are a great positive role model. I wish you nothing but success and happiness in whatever your future holds!

I love my manual wheelchair! It’s so helpful. I relate to you so much on feeling like a baby, but I’m trying to reframe my mindset to be excited about every new thing I can do.

You are a very strong positive person. I’ve recently been in a serious car accident, hit by a drunk driver. this was the second near death experience I’ve had in less than a year. So I understand when you say traumatic. I’ve also suffer from an autoimmune disease I was diagnosed with last year among other health problems. So I try to be positive but lately it’s been hard to. Seeing you so positive, motivates and inspires me. You put a smile on my face. Keep it up!

Makayla, I had a spinal cord injury back in 2005 (I was about 30 at the time). I've always considered myself a very positive person but that period of time really strained that part of me. During recovery, I (like you I'm sure) were around a lot of other people going through the same thing. Most people were very depressed and struggled to find the motivation to get out of bed. I say that to say this; your attitude and inspiration are amazing. I thought I was a positive person but when I was at the point you are now I was nowhere near as positive as you are and that makes me feel so happy for you! You are just a little younger than my sons and I'm just amazed at your determination and ambition! I know your family is SO proud of you. People that don't know para/quadriplegics don't understand that we can live perfectly normal lives and be completely fulfilled. By telling your story here you are showing many that life doesn't end just because you hit a bump in the road (even if it is a big bump). I can't wait to follow you on your journey and just know that it only gets better! Oh and you'd make a great Oklahoma Sooner student!!! lol Finally, do you have a P.O. box where you or your family can receive things?

I love how you answered that last question, so many people are quick to give advice or make statements that they know nothing about. You are right no one knows what the future holds.

I dont even know how I stumbled upon you.. maybe bc my 14 yr old is a cheerleader, idk though. But as a 33 yr old mama, I'm so amazed at the wisdom a 17 year old could have. That's something that cannot be taught or faked. I am just so inspired in so many ways. Makayla is such a blessing to me, I could not even put into words, and if I tried, it would take pages and pages to explain!!
With tht said, this inspiration will touch many, many more lives!! I'm a true product of my generation. An addict in long term recovery who now works in the field to help others gain or sustain recovery. Makayla has without a doubt impacted the way I interact with and support others. Amazing. Beautiful. I'm so, so humbled!

Sometimes I love the UA-cam Algorithm. Found your channel, instantly subbed and followed your IG. I just have to say, wow. You are such a strong women. After everything you endure you never fail to smile and see the positive side of things. Sometimes it can be really cruel saying “God has a plan for everything” because sometimes horrible things happen, but I am a true believer that things do happen for a reason. I hope your channel sheds light to others who need it. You are such an inspiration. Can’t wait to follow along your journey more. Stay strong! Your in our prayers!

Though I wasn't paralyzed I was in a car accident at 19 and my body was crushed from my belly button down. Along with spinal fracture and TBI, my legs were destroyed. I had to learn everything again in my own way. I tried my best to be positive, and it took me literally years to find my new normal. Wasn't at all my previous normal, but I have realized it was my journeyon this earth. I shouldn't have survived but here I am witnessing you slay! I'm 41 now and yes I have limitations but my life is full, many people notice I go about things differently, but it has never held me back! Attitude is key and girl you've got it! Keep it up❤❤❤ you'll do whatever your heart desires

I’ve never met you but have followed your story from afar. I am amazed at your courage, strength and perseverance. I cannot imagine the trauma of such a life-altering injury. You are truly wise beyond your years. I’m an ICU nurse and former all-star cheerleader as well. I have seen the first days of traumatic injuries like yours. You are incredible, and your mindset is amazing. You have come so far, I have enjoyed seeing your journey. You really are an inspiration!

I’m so proud of you and your wonderful attitude . My son was making an angel in the snow at 14 and is a C4/5 spinal injury . He is now a director in New York City and doing very well . He still has his injury but it has not stopped him from having a wonderful life . Walking or not walking is not the important thing . Gods got this and he only knows .. we don’t need to know the answers .My son went to college at Carnigie Mellon which has wonderful accessibility now . He went to Rehab at the Shepard Center in Atlanta Georgia which was wonderful even though we lived in Rochester NY . My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family . We are rooting for you rand your dreams coming true . You can also travel !! He has been to Italy, Taiwan , and all over the United Stars and Europe . If you have any questions or need anything we would be happy to help you and your parents in this new journey . Much love and many prayers to you .. You are doing an amazing job this early in your injury !
