2016 Acura ILX Review - First Drive

  • Well loved by many, it became synonymous with Acura and elevated the young luxury brand’s image. But the ILX, Acura’s new take on a small premium sedans, has yet to catch on. Lacking an identity of its own, the ILX’s mundane styling, ho-hum powertrain and absence of a family resemblance meant most people forgot about it before it even had a chance to make an impression.

    It is no longer a civic.
    modified chassis 12% stiffer and redesigned slightly
    acura interior
    acura leds
    acura engine
    acura transmission
    acrua body panels.
    This car is now 10% civic
    90% Acura. Good job Honda. Home run on this refresh!

    Fuel economy ratings are spot on. Driving at 70 mph on a level surface, 36 mpg is definitely doable. It gets its best mileage at around 60-65 mph. Above 70 mph, aerodynamic drag takes over and mpg tapers off.
    Transmission: tends to shift into higher gears a bit too soon for my liking. I think this was done intentionally by Acura to get mpg ratings up. Of course, this can be offset by putting the transmission into sport mode and using the paddle shifters. :)
    Gearing is quite high, which can make this car a bit slow off the line. 4.50:1 final drive (found in the TLX) would have been better. Funny that the TLX has 4.50 gearing but the ILX doesn't, despite it being the same transmission.
    At 70 mph, the engine is taching around 1850-1900 rpms.
    Headlights: extremely bright, even when on dim. Contrary to what the reviewer said in the video, the headlights are ALL LED's. It says so in the manual.
    I have this car and I definitely love it.
    It's going to get real fun when the ILX gets a makeover in the future and supposedly gets the new Civic's 2.0 turbo engine. Acura needs to keep the exterior styling "under the radar" when the new refresh is due.

      gmualum08 This car's engine requires premium fuel, because it has a higher compression ratio. Different grades of fuel run at different time settings, this is why they require different kinds of fuel.
      The Scion FRS is a regular car, and it also uses only premium fuel as well.
      When the fuel goes into the piston, you have an explosion. The explosion in the piston has to be correct in order to operate the crank shaft. Higher end engines have higher compression ratios, and it also has higher performance. This simply means, if you use the wrong kind of fuel, you tend to have pre ignitions and this could damage your engine.

    • @Ace1000ks19751982
      @Ace1000ks19751982 9 років тому

      gmualum08 The Acura TLX is going to shift more smoothly than a Honda Accord. The Honda Civic Si also uses premium gasoline as well. I don't think car companies are colluding with energy companies.
      The Nissan Z370 isn't a luxury car, and it uses premium fuel as well. High performance engines use premium fuel.

    I seriously don't get people who think it's so expensive. I have Invoice $28000 for Acurawatch package. Now someone please point me to car that has 200hp engine, 8 speed duel clutch transmission, collision sensors, adaptive cruise control, lane watch, automatic climate, heated seats, jewel lights(or similar), led rear lights, power seats, sun roof, keyless smart entry and push start button, 4-year/50,000-mile limited warranty for less than 28k
    Fully loaded Civic Si without half of the options of ILX is $25k And lets face it, less than 10% people in US drive manual transmission.
    A3 starts at $30k. 1.8L turbo and does not even have back up camera as standard.
    CLA250 starts at $31k and simplest option to add is at least $1k. Besides according to Consumer Reports it has less than horrible reliability rating
    BMW 220i is also $30k at start line and they will take your arm and leg for features.

    Why does everyone still compare this to the Civic. A lot of manufactures share platforms, Lexus ES shares a platform with Toyota Avolon. This isn't new people this happens all the time. Test drive the car befor you write it off.

    • @blankerism
      @blankerism 9 років тому

      I agree with you but it is what it is when you get down to it. Its a Civic in a tux with a better drivetrain and that's cause I think the Civic is a great car. And you're right about Toyota's Avalon and Camry sharing the same underpinnings with LExus ES. So does GM with the Buick LcCrosse/Regal, Chevy Malibu/Impala with the Cadillac XTS. nearly all manufactures do it, just show get lazy when they do rebadges.

    • @chigasaki06
      @chigasaki06 9 років тому

      That's true, but I think the problem with the ILX is that it looked so plain vanilla. With the other cars you mentioned, there's a clear distinction in quality, whereas with the ILX there wasn't. I think this refresh definitely improves the overall look.

    • @jsiszero
      @jsiszero 9 років тому

      chigasaki06 It has to do more with the Acura brand... back then they're just rebadged Civics and it has the same ricer image as Honda. Now Acura tries to break from that image but the damage has been done with the inevitable comparison with the Integra.

      Hys Zahre Never said it in a way that it takes away from the job that Acura and Honda did with the ILX and the Civic, if we're just going to split hairs about what it is or isn't. Never said that it was a bad thing. example.The Zeta chassis which the Camaro and Chevrolet SS/former Pontiac G6 shared the same chassis/platform just heavily modified to make them more distinct from each other. chassis sharing is a fact of life for automakers

    Hi, I've driven both the 2017 Acura ILX ASpec 8-speed and the 2017 Mazda 3 sedan 6-speed auto. I can't decide between the two for point to point acceleration. I sensed the Mazda 3 is faster from idling rpm to about 30mph and the ILX wins the crown at the end of the line. I can really feel the Mazda push me more back to the seat from stop light. At the end of the day, its still just a Civic, just as the Audi A3 is a Volkswagen Golf underneath. Acura would have been better off redesigning the TSX and the TL, keeping both cars separate. Then offer an RSX replacement. The RLX is almost dead in sales, it should have been brought to market with a rear wheel drive setup, not that silly PAWs system. I can't understand what their marketing group is looking at when they recommend new designs.

      I would agree but then disagree. mechanically, minus the engine, under the skin they're blending and sharing parts, but so does nearly every car maker. But visually Acura went to great lengths to separate it from the Civic from the exterior to the interior. I still think its a great lil car, just that the engine was weak, glad to see they upgraded it in a big way. this is the engine they should of at least started off with out the gate

    • @blankerism
      @blankerism 9 років тому

      which is why I think Acura upgraded the hell out of the ILX. Buick's Verano was better in nearly everyway which also included the turbo 4 cyl. In every comparison publication the ILX was compared to the Verano when it came to appearance of exterior and interior, drivetrain and electronics. Verano scored higher and it can be argued that the sales prove it

      The ILX looks ok but the Buick Verano still looks better. It's insane that back in the 1990s, no one would have thought that someday, a Buick, back then known as a "grandpa's car", would be eventually be better looking than an Acura, the company that made those beautiful Legend sedans and coupes lol.

  • @dcharizard91
    @dcharizard91 9 років тому +3

    Most still see Acura as a sub-luxury car like Volvo and Buick. I don't really see this competing with the CLA or A3, besides size. It doesn't have the performance, features, luxury, and branding to attract those buyers. The only Acura I see a lot is the new MDX, so we'll see if this will sell better than the TLX.

    • @MrLalasd
      @MrLalasd 9 років тому +11

      The ilx is quicker than the CLA and A3. Not only that it is cheaper and comes with more stuff.

    • @dcharizard91
      @dcharizard91 9 років тому

      With similar weight but less horsepower and/or torque than the CLA and A3, the ILX can't be faster. Similarly equipped A3 1.8t is only a couple thousand dollars more than the ILX, which is a much better and more refined car than the ILX. Just look at the interior of the A3 and its worth it.

    • @MrLalasd
      @MrLalasd 9 років тому

      dcharizard91 The a3's interior is not that great. And it is not that refined. The gearbox is shit as well. Also this new ilx will be the quietest of the 3 and has the most comfortable seats of the 3. Go test drive all 3 and you will see.

    • @blankerism
      @blankerism 9 років тому +1

      ILX is better packaged because Acura's approach Is a one size fits all with few options. where as Audi and Mercedes Benz entry models will always been, in a sense, stripper models with a laundry list of options. its because of that, that I don't see the point in them comparing ILX with the CLA and A3. its an apple to oranges comparison because its like dcharizard91 said, Acura is considered a sub luxury car company like Volvo, Buick sorta, and Lincoln.

    • @SlowWhip
      @SlowWhip 9 років тому

      CLA, A3, ILX all three of them stand on FWD. Unless you go for CLA AMG with AWD but I wouldn't put 55k on a 4 cylinder and S3 is also AWD, that's the only advantage CLA and A3 have on the ILX but after they're all basically the same thing.

  • @Wells306

  • @05Forenza
    @05Forenza 9 років тому

    Ermm...it's better for sure. But competing with an A3/CLA seems like a stretch. They need to get more power in their cars before they can really compete. The TSX had 201hp from a 2.4L way back in 2004.

    Everyone who's saying that Acura is now more differentiated from Honda than ever haven't been keeping up..
    Just recently, they put the new push-start transmission in the all new Pilot. That same transmission is found in the TLX (?) It's stuff like that, that makes Acura less desirable. Why pay a lot more for Honda's so called 'luxury' brand, when you can find it in their lesser priced companions. The dual screens, the rims (on this car anyways, look identical to that of the Civic) are all too Honda-ish. How else has Lexus survived? You don't see Toyota-like quality in their Lexus brand. They stay positive with reviews because the luxury brand has to stand out. Be bold, different, and worth the money. Acura really needs to change their interiors, as Lincoln did, to separate itself from its Ford counterparts.

      @marcluffy5161 9 років тому

      NO the platform is now civic's modified. 12% stiffer and redesigned slightly for better safety. It is no longer a civic platform. its hard to make it 12% stiffer when the civics chassis is already stiff

    Don't humor Acura, AutoGuide. This thing needs to get pass the Buick Verano first before getting into Mercedes/Audi territory, which benefits from their trademark Quiet Tuning AND can be had with a turbo and manual. This looks like a classier Civic SI, overdone body kit and all

    just 2 years and they refresh it already, that remind me of what they hv done to the civic. why not make it better at the first place?? honda/acura

    Boring exterior and boring transmission. Honda makes the best manual transmissions, it's a shame acura won't offer it anymore.

    • @waruilewi
      @waruilewi 9 років тому

      Dea Garic Exterior refresh is much improved over the 2015 model but that might not be saying much. Honda's wonderful and innovative DCT with torque converter ranks right up there with the ZF 8-speed used the BMW, both of which shame the jerky S-tronic/DSG DCT in the Audi/VW.

    • @deagaric4765
      @deagaric4765 9 років тому

      I'm not arguing that, I just wish they would at least offer a few with a clutch. I know other companies have also quit producing manual transmissions but I'm sure acura had a market for it.

    • @nhojnomadoc
      @nhojnomadoc 9 років тому

      The exterior kind of reminds me of a modern rsx so i'm biased to that. It would be awesome to see a 6 speed manual but apparently there is not much of a demand out there since they ditched the idea.

      +Dea Garic if you go to a Honda or Acura dealership, they have 0-1 normal cars in manual transmission. You have to request it most of the time. Go to a dealership and see for yourself.

    • @deagaric4765

      Yes, you are correct. If you are the type who would normally go for a BMW or Mercedes, then this Luxurious Civic is definitely NOT the car that would impress you. But if you simply want a much better Civic then this car is PERFECT. It will be stealing a lot of potential Honda Civic Si buyers away from the Civic brand.
