I'm 38. I just started last year with strength training. Then I fell in love (can I say that?) With strongman. I have no gym near me, i live in the country, and I'm...not a rich man. However, I have some weights, alot of stones (from the river) and plenty of logs (actual logs, lol). I've been using chains, tires...anything I can get my hands on. I just want to do one strongman, before I cant anymore. I know there are older strongmen, I just mean I haven't done anything like this as a younger man. I am grateful for your channel. I dont know if you'll see this, but thanks man!
I so very much appreciate you for the support and knowledge you put out into the world. With a click or touch, I’m able to take inspiration and knowledge from a really great guy who seems to actually give a shit. Thanks brotha, I hope that this allows you to keep pursuing your dreams without the financial stresses, you deserve it. Keep lifting :)
This is a great video. I have been trying to figure this out for the past few years. As a fulltime student and dad I don't have a lot of cash laying around to buy all the stuff at once and this definitely helps a lot and gives me a road map to building the gym I want&need. Thanks!
cant wait to start building my home gym this is gonna be helpful to look back on! I normally train as a powerlifter but I feel like I need to branch out into strong man since it has a lot more variation in events.
Possible video: How to ramp up GPP (i.e. cardio). The final goal is what you have always preached: giant sets, limited rest, dedicated cardio at end of training, etc. But maybe a video focusing on the journey from more traditional "powerlifting" workouts to (be)dangerous. What do you introduce / change first? How quickly do you change? Does everyday of training change all at once, or does it get added in chunks? Is it as simple as jump in the deep end and drop the weight being used as the body adapts? Just a thought, thanks for all the info.
First change: add your ab work into your giant sets. You might not be able to advance the weight for a couple of weeks. Great way to begin, and you get the satisfaction of being done in the gym when your lifts are done. 2nd: get that antagonist/explosive movement in there. Now you're performing alternate movement/main mover/abs as a single set. Again, you may not be able to advance weight for a couple of weeks. 3rd: go nuts in the assistance. 3 or 4 movements in a single set. Suck wind. Repeat. 4th: timed giant sets (usually for your assistance). Give yourself a reasonable amount of time to perform one giant set of your assistance, leaving about a minute extra. So four assistance movements, figure 3-5 minutes. Start your timer, run the set, suck wind until time is up, repeat. 5th: you've been shaving time on your assistance to stay challenged? Go ahead and do your dedicated conditioning warmup/finish. Once you are doing all these things while lifting at your normal weight/%s, you're a machine. Program your lifts as normal with giant set tier 1&2 lifts, timed assistance runs, and a dedicated conditioning warmup or finisher from here on out. That's how I did it over about 3 months. I am old and smoked most of my life, and I live at 4500 feet, so if my feeble ass can do it, you can too. 👍
I'm no strongman, but by the gods! Your videos have great excersises for "common people" as well and are a great inspiration to go to the gym and go at it hard as frick!
Awesome video. Reinforces that what my CrossFit has been accumulating over the past 5 years is on par with your list. Some of us are finally doing our first comp this summer and it's been great having a majority of the equipment to practice and get familiar with. - axle bar - farmers handles - log - stones (3) - sandbags (3) - tires (2) - sleds (2) - wagon wheels - kegs (2) - yoke straps
Brian, I'm looking to acquire more equipment in the near future for my itty bitty baby strongman/ninja warrior/martial arts gym soon and this video is exactly what I needed to hear. We have a small budget and small space footprint right now so knowing how to prioritize and how to save money/space is freaking huge. Thanks so much.
Spot on brother, I just started buying stuff to start a home gym and the first things (well actually the only things i have so far) A 10" log, a tall yoke with j-cups, sand bag, cheap bar and some bumper plates.
Brilliant video mate thanks for the tips. I'm taking my first small steps into strongman training in the gym I work at. We used to have tonnes of strongman equipment but they sold it off because no one was using it! Still have some logs and sandbags along with the usual bars and dumbbells etc. Thinking of buying myself a yoke and looking around for kegs and tires. Thanks mate.
I like the idea of CrossFit, but that's it. The real thing sucks. Injuries everywhere, slappy ruling, horrible form, cheating, and really poor production quality.
I like the way you came up with your list. I also like the way you refer to the equipment as toys because it always feels like strongman is supposed to be hard, but fun. Watching the world's strongest man at 2 am on ESPN 19 when I was a teenager is what convinced me to start lifting because it looked fun.
Not sure if you read my mind or I read your mind but this is pretty much exactly how I plan to start my home gym (eventually). I definitely agree with the yoke; many people don't understand simply how versatile it is and all the purposes it serves.
couldn´t agree more with you putting the yoke as #1! you can actually start with a yoke and plates, that´s it. You will be able to do squats at differents heights, presses, bench press, pull ups, zercher carry, rows, overhead carry, yoke carry, drags, sleds, dips, deadlifts, literally the sky is the lmit with that piece of equpment. However I think natural stones have to make it to the top 3 as well the farmer handles, those two will build and amazing upper back strength. I even believe that at some point barbells are just way too comfy for strongman.
Awesome content! Me and my friend are trying our first competition in Kemah, Texas in may. You inspired us and I definitely hope to share an awesome update on how we do! Trying to get in a training session with Trey Mitchell he lives 10 minutes from us
Just wanted to than you for all of the advice and tips you give for all of the different lifts! I am a college baseball player and our strength coach makes us do double overhand grip deadlifts on percentages based on our switch grip max numbers for reps and over-gripping the bar and trying to make a speed bump with my calluses is the only way I'm able to hold on and finish my reps when everyone else is complaining and dropping the bar lol
Blueblonic blague made me crease. Come back to this vid for when I start getting my equipment and starting a strongman equipped gym next month! Also the list is perfect. Practicing the big 4 is important as an accessory to strongman and a yoke you can press, squat and walk with for conditioning with!
Never fail to teach me something! If you haven’t already can you do a short video on how you should prepare for a competition. What should you do with training the week before and after!
Honestly I'd put the sled in tier 2 for me personally. While it might not show up too often in events it's such a great tool for conditioning to complement your training even if it won't show up in your next comp.
I just made an atlas stone to start training for the LionSATE Classic II. You can buy acrylic globes off of amazon for around half what a real mold costs. The downside is it is a one-use implement because you have to destroy the acrylic to get the stone out, but otherwise it works just like using a designated stone mold.
@@JonPeterson www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00435DYTM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This is the one that I bought for the globe, turned out ~165lbs. For support and to make sure it doesn't break when filling it, it would probably be a good idea to give it support on all sides. I'm not sure if its necessary, but it wouldn't hurt.
I have a bit of this stuff, but winter has kept me inside. Im leaning towards farmers handles over a yoke first because I can use the handles as a makeshift trap bar too. My circus dumbbell is severely underused right now though.
Awesome mate! This also helps with knowing what to look for in a "strongman gym" ... cause not all strongman / powerlifting gyms have everything you may "want" :-D
Loving the content Brian! Every video is fun and educational 😊 keep up the good work. Started strongman training because of you and it's been a great change in lifestyle/ fitness for me! Will enter a couple competitions next year, from the uk and looking forward to it
Awesome content as usual. I would also like to throw out for those more frugal, try to find implements used. FB markeptplace, craigslist, and just reaching out to other gyms can get you some pretty good deals. It takes some patience and getting lucky, but you can save money in the long run.
What do ou think about basing a weight workout VERY heavily on the squat (ass-to-grass), deadlift (conventional) and (heavy-ass) barbell row. I have been told, that heavy barbell rows have a good carry over to pull-ups (chin-ups) and deadlift whereas the squat has a good carry over for deadlifts. Besides, pretty much all athletes do squats for (vertical) jump and sprinting performance. All of these movements done explosively.
Hi Brian, great video. I have to find out, how to make sandbags and kegs on cheap here in Czech Republic and I need to push them to our gym :) I was thinking about trying some Strongman plan due to overall athleticism and because Strongman seems like fun (you know that I-want-to-die-or-at-least-let-me-cry-silently-in-the-corner fun). Your earlier templates you shared, that was involving strongman, were great. I was thinking, if I wanted something even more strongman forward - should I just e.g. swap regular OHP training with axle or log or circus dumbbell? Thank you very much for the great content you are providing here!!!
Sand bag is the easiest thing ever and cost like 6kc in hornbach or somewhere... And there are many ways to incorporate strongman to your training - you can work implement heavy and then do volume with normal bar...or the other way...or do normal stuff and stronman as a assistance...and stuff like sandbag carry or farmers can be done whenever or like a conditioning stuff
@@hodornador6085 That's cool. I was just worried that this kind of bag would rip when thrown over yoke or by doing some more rough things. I should go and take a look what can i get :)
@@Zorrish yeah it rips easily but its good for carrying or shouldering...if you put it down slowly its ok...and im sure there some more quality cheap as well
You are the best. Your videos are the most informative strength guy stuff online, especially combined with Alan Thrall and Kale. Do you sprint or plyo box jump? Or, rather let me ask about yoke. What about an axle with chains and some 55 gallon barrels? I know one guy who does yoke walk with an axle and hangs kettlebells off bands on it. He uses this for his first beginners. What about a chain yoke? Good bad or ugly?
Crossfit for strong people! I love it! :) I also really enjoy the challenges trying to build whatever equipment I can. I built a trap bar out of scrap lumber and pipe, and braided a battle rope using a bunch of much thinner rope, among other things. Hey, how's that for a video idea? DIY equipment!
Go look at Brian's programs he has a good playlist and they all pretty much revolve around building those things (since all three of those things are related to strength). His Powerbuilding program for example lets you do all those things, or his Darkhorse program, which has the strong man laid out.
Very nice and useful information as always, I recently started with the aim of competing in an amateur strongman comp in the UK within the next year or two so thank you. My question is : When's the next collab with Juji? I personally loved that series
great video ! i actually bought a yoke after this ! why don't get a machinist or metal smith to do equipment and slap the nevesate brand on it ? a lot of people would jump on it
For a sandbag, a Walmart duffel bag works great. Just throw a few bags of sand in a think trash bag and you’re good to go. Titan Fitness can get you the farmers walk handles and axle for super cheap.
Not looking to compete more so interested in the functional strength aspect of strong man this was a wonderful breakdown thanks do you have any recommendations for weights for smaller people I’m at about 140-145 lbs?
My only question would be how to get an axel bar for cheap? I’m just kidding, that topic is covered in so many videos! I totally get why though, it’s a great piece of equipment and can be obtained so easily, great video, interesting to see where you placed everything.
Brian! I coach a high school barbell club. We don’t have space in the weight room for strongman, but we have a wood floored gymnasium. Any strongman event ideas come to mind that are wood floor safe? As strongman tends to be quite abrasive to the ground. Thanks so much from Calgary Alberta Canada!
I'd guess sandbags and Bulgarian Bags. Can also throw that stuff on a tarp or blanket and drag it or pull it towards you with a rope. Also yiu can take turns fireman carrying eachother across the gym. But I'm no expert
Sandbags are fun man, there isn't a thing you can't do with it. Just made a 50kg one for on the pitch. Only 2 guys from my team managed to lift it. That's how funky and hard that thing is.
50 kg isn't super heavy. But when I think footballers I don't think strength. More speed and agility. I played as a keeper for many years and I was usually the biggest guy on the pitch at about 110 kg body weight when I played as an adult.
I'm an MMA coach for 15 years I got a young group of kids at the age 16 17 what do you recommend for strength to start them out on please let me know you have an awesome channel keep up the great work God bless you
Hey Brian, do you think its wise to get a yoke or squat stands instead of a full power rack? Its for a garage gym and space is an issue. Thanks for the great content
It's less stable than a full rack (be careful when racking something heavy!) and you can't do pin squats or pin press with a yoke, but it gets the job done for most lifts, more or less. Plus like the man says, you can use it for other applications. If you can afford a yoke but a rack is another year away, it might be a good decision to buy the yoke now, especially if you'll use it for those other things and not just as squat stands.
Thx for the video. I have a question. I am making my own framerwalk equipment but I don’t know the size for the handles. What size are the normally. I figure there are many sizes just curious if there is a one that is used more common. Thank you for your info and help.
Great video, Brian! I've been putting together the pieces of a make shift strongman home gym over the past couple of years based on your videos. I recently picked up a cambered squat bar and so far I love it as a squat variant. I'm even thinking that I will use it in the summer for frame carries (TBD if it will actually work). Question is, what other variants/exercises have you used the CSB for? And what is the best way to incorporate it into your program?
Question that is off topic. I am going to be working for the next 5 weeks so much that I will not be able to train at all. I know what you will say - just find the time - but it’s literally a situation where if I didn’t have to sleep I wouldn’t because the more I work the more I make. My question is how much loss in strength should I expect over these 5 weeks? I am 54 years old in pretty good shape.
Hello Brian, I am new to your videos but I like the content. I do traditional bodybuilding workouts but I am going to incorporate some of your stuff into my workouts. I actually have a son entering high school and he wants to join the wrestling team. Do you have recommendations for a 9th grader on getting stronger/explosive. I believe he is going to struggle against older guys who are physically more mature than him. He has a few months before the season starts. He will also be practicing wrestling 2-3 time per week leading up to the season.
Hi Brian, Good video as ever but I was thinking: "does a bunch of sandbag/keg/stone can be replace by a unique husafell stone for a starter"? I mean, it should be a great way to save money and place while training harder, isn't it?
Not at all man. They might be all front carries but the things that you were going out to build up to be really good at the Roosevelt Keri is going to be different then a sandbag or keg. I wouldn’t agree with this at all
Can you do a video for powerlifters who want to do their first strongman competition like me? Im a raw westside conjugate lifter whos doing my first strongman competition on April in Kennewick, WA.
Awesome video, thanks for the info, a couple of year ago you talked about some guys that actually are welders that build some of this equipment and the price was reasonable, do you still have that info? One of them was pitbull equipment of something like that.
Primacy of similarity. Basically, the closer to the thing, the better. Compared to the heaviest dumbbells you own, trap bar is great. Compared to farmer handles, it's not so bad. It's almost exactly the same as a frame. Better than nothing.

Are there any programs that put together strongman, powerlifting, and hypertrophy?
Go look at Brian's programs he has a good playlist and they all pretty much revolve around building those things (since all three of those things are related to strength). His Powerbuilding program for example lets you do all those things, or his Darkhorse program, which has the strong man laid out.
Hahah that is how I make my living brother.
Jeremie Boudreau awesome thanks
Yes! Buy one from Brian. Got one last December and it's dope AF.
No BS worth every penny. You want to be the best learn from the best. Captain "I Got This", got you covered.
Very nice and useful information as always, I recently started with the aim of competing in an amateur strongman comp in the UK within the next year or two so thank you. My question is : When's the next collab with Juji? I personally loved that series
Love the Rise shirt, I bought the straps, good quality.👍
thanx man, very nice video!
I’ve had so many issues trying to prioritize on what equipment to buy, but never thought of asking. Thanks for laying it all out there, Brian! 🙌🏻
love your passion bro...you talk pretty fast--but its enthusiasm--keep it up
great video ! i actually bought a yoke after this ! why don't get a machinist or metal smith to do equipment and slap the nevesate brand on it ? a lot of people would jump on it
Getting all of my ducks in a row to gear up and join your gym! Signed up for the Viking Strongman event in November and it's time to get serioussss!
This is so helpful, thanks!
Really great video....18 months late. Hahaha thanks brother, good stuff and I think the list is dead on.
For a sandbag, a Walmart duffel bag works great. Just throw a few bags of sand in a think trash bag and you’re good to go.
Titan Fitness can get you the farmers walk handles and axle for super cheap.
Great vid man!
Not looking to compete more so interested in the functional strength aspect of strong man this was a wonderful breakdown thanks do you have any recommendations for weights for smaller people I’m at about 140-145 lbs?
How about a video on how to properly fill sandbags and different events to do with them?
Brian you're my favorite big man.
My only question would be how to get an axel bar for cheap? I’m just kidding, that topic is covered in so many videos! I totally get why though, it’s a great piece of equipment and can be obtained so easily, great video, interesting to see where you placed everything.
Alot of commercial Axl bars are much cheaper than a good barbell.
Very informative!
I'm an MMA coach for 15 years I got a young group of kids at the age 16 17 what do you recommend for strength to start them out on please let me know you have an awesome channel keep up the great work God bless you
Hey I'm 5'5 150lbs, I wanted to know if it were possible for me to aspire to greatness in strongman I mean not like, biran shaw or thor
Brian!!😀 Good vid as always
have you ever herd of assymtric weight on bar training? putting wieght more on one side of bar etc..
Great video. Who made the blue sandbag you had in the video?
thanks very helpful
Do you have a video that shows different training methods for each tier or programs for beginners to start training strong man?
Thx for the video. I have a question. I am making my own framerwalk equipment but I don’t know the size for the handles. What size are the normally. I figure there are many sizes just curious if there is a one that is used more common. Thank you for your info and help.
Just make sure to have 18" from the ground to the longitdunal axis of the handle and you will be good to go!
I wouldn’t agree with this at all
@@BrianAlsruheOfficial Make sense, thank you.
One of them was pitbull equipment of something like that.
do you recommend using the yoke as a squat rack as well as for pressing to keep costs down?

Thoughts on trap bar as a potential (starting) substitute for farmers handles? Or too different since it's a very static object you're carrying?
Primacy of similarity. Basically, the closer to the thing, the better. Compared to the heaviest dumbbells you own, trap bar is great. Compared to farmer handles, it's not so bad. It's almost exactly the same as a frame. Better than nothing.
I cant believe kettlebells didnt make the list. Where do you get those metal circus db?
