    I don’t actually fertilize at all except when I plant. I really don’t have a clue how to keep on top of what each plant needs, haha. I enjoy short videos, I don’t often have time for long ones.😊 Great job on this one!👍

    I have used all methods of top dressing (side dressing) fertilizer for similar reasons.

    Great video!
    I find a general broadcast to be the best. Great for slowly releasing the nutrients. If you have a good mulch or did a good job leveling your beds, runoff from heavy rain shouldn't matter too much and it will naturally work into the soil!

    I generally use the dress and rake method in my raised beds and when I pulled my over-wintered kale plants out this spring, they had roots that reached out at least a foot in all directions looking for the nutrients. For my close together crops like onions, I use a liquid organic fertilizer that I pour over the plants.

    Your beds always look so clean and weed free :) Having to deal with bermuda grass and other pesky weeds I've found that I really have to lay on a thick mulch in my raised beds, usually pine straw, and even with that if I leave for a weekend I have at least 2 hours of weeding to look forward to with just 4 4x10' beds. Because of the heavy mulch I've usually only done broadcasting but feel like I've been neglecting the plants. What are your thoughts on fertigation? I gave in this year and bought an ez-flo unit to try with water soluble fertilizer. I would love to hear your opinion on fertigation for a non-commercial garden (i.e. backyard gardeners).

    • @christineedwards4865
      @christineedwards4865 Рік тому +1

      Soluble fertilizers are great for established plants, you just have to fertilize more frequently because they tend to get washed away by rain much faster than slow release fertilizer. Compost teas are also a good source of soluble nutrients. I prefer using slow decomposing organic soil amendments before planting, and get good results without fertilizing during the growing season except for heavy feeders, which might get a light blood meal top dressing mid-season. There are many methods for gardening, and they all work that I've tried. By the way, if you stay on top of that bermuda grass, and pull it out with as much of the root as you can get EVERY time it pokes up a new leaf, you'll probably have it mostly under control by the end of the year, and if you do the same next year, it will hardly be a problem for you. It's a stubborn weed, but you can kill it with persistence.

    Question I top dressed my asparagus bed this morning with a mix of blood meal and bone meal because it’s going to rain today. I didn’t want to disturb the bed and am counting on the rain to move the fertilizer into the bed,is there a better way?

    • @classicrocklover5615
      @classicrocklover5615 Рік тому

      The rain will help, but organic fertilizers can take a while to dissolve and be bioavailable to the plants. So whether it's rained on or stirred in, it's not going to be an instant delivery system.

    • @christineedwards4865
      @christineedwards4865 Рік тому

      Asparagus has very deep roots, so you could probably ferilize them similar to a tree, by using a stick or screwdriver or similar to poke a few holes near the plants and put fertilizer down the holes. Since you're using dry organic soil amendments, I think greensand or rock phosphate would also be a good addition. (The asparagus vegetable is basically a flower stem.) Be careful not to make your holes too close to the plants, because you don't want direct contact between the roots and fertilizer. Blood meal is organic, but is very hot (meaning tons of nitrogen) and can burn plants if you use too much, so keep that in mind as well. Bone meal and greensand decompose very slowly, so don't expect instant results more like you would get with something more soluble. It can take 3 months for bone meal to decompose.
