My garlic is a nard neck brought here in 1947 just after ww2 from my father cousin. He grew it until his death in 2000 now I grow it. The genealogy is 73 + years old I also gave some to my cousin in Illinois he grows it we put in quite a few about 70 cloves. The best you have ever tasted.
I was at a street fair an hour north of me and met a lady with a garlic farm. Because of your videos I bought some seed garlic from her and will be planting this fall.
I remember when I first started gardening I was having pest issues with my outdoor container plant, I put a section of garlic clove in the soil and inadvertently grew garlic lol
Hey Luke. My names Kathi and I’ve been gardening on my own since early 1980’s and grew up in the garden with my Dad. I was given two rows every year, different every year too he said best way to learn each veggie. He was right, ♥️ And I think of him there watching when I’m in the garden even today. My Mom- she was the flower and bush gardens so I learned lots about flowers and bushes. On my OWN, I’ve been 3 years researching the medicinal herbs- and plants , I make salves and shampoo and just today I’m doing white clovers that generally get mowed down. Anyway- I stumbled on your channel being on the up next and I’ve subscribed 👍. I prefer channels that are natural -, and those that stay true to themselves and not do and say things you KNOW exactly which channels they got that from. 😄😄. There’s a lot spent on trying to make your garden PRETTY. I plant it, weed it, harvest and eat/preserve. There’s channels uses cattle panels to have plants grow UP, and I’d definitely have those if I could afford it to grow vertical for the space - I have quite a few gardens in ground , I have enough land to put in another BUT well, I’m at the stage of living where my body seems to act older than my mind thinks it is 😄. I’ve been binge watching you and REALLY enjoy your channel. ♥️
Luke, I'm in my 60"s and have had a vegitable garden since I was a kid. I love your videos and I always learn something from them. I never grew Garlic, but now I will. Keep up the good work.
I just love your videos. I’m hoping next year, God willing, I’ll be able to grow my first garlic crop. I’m learning soooo much from you! I really really appreciate you taking the time to teach us how to garden. God has given you a gift.
This is great! Thank you for sending the cute card with a QR code to this video with my garlic order. First time grower of garlic in Eastern Nebraska 5a. Spot on!! ❤
I so look forward to seeing every video you do..I find myself cutting time off my gym workout on the days I work in the garden because after I watch one of your videos I get so inspired to grow my own organic veggies..I always over plant so everybody I know gets hooked up!
So sad, it's just too close to our first frost date in Ludington. I'll spend time studying When to Plant during the cozy winter months. I must get used to the different planting here since moving from CA. 🌱🌿🍃
Oh wow will have to check! Get some ordered! I love all his products, however here we plant early spring and harvest in fall, we get very large heads and do not trust our long hard winters!
Going back and watching the old videos, it's super hard to find the "if you haven't watched that one" references, like the rehabbing your soil one. It would be great if you put the links straight into the description/notes, or something like an index to the key videos to check out for new subscribers on your website. But love the content!!
today is 9/21/2023, my garlic order just arrived! first frost date here is october 21st..... i need to getter done!!! we have lots of rain coming this weekend... oh dear....
Ok. I took out the garlic l had left. Well l took 3 big ones..... so this is my first time as well as a first time gardening. So it’s learning season.... here we go. !!!
I grew garlic for the first time this year. I actually planted it in spring; had no idea about the best time to plant. I saw garlic bulbs in the garden center at the store, and figured it must be time. I didn't harvest it until September and it turned out pretty good. Now I plan to take some of my best heads, and plant those in the fall this year for a summer yield next year. I enjoy your channel.
Excited to try garlic again this season, I have good certified seed garlic...but I'll be honest, the best potato harvest I've ever gotten, came from store bought potatoes. I purchased some highly touted seed potatoes this season along with store bought, and I was extremely disappointed in the seeds, maybe got 2-3 pounds out of a 5 pound bag of seed potatoes. thanks for the constant great information though!!
It may be because of where you live. I live in South America and here when you buy stuff like Garlic, Onion or Potatoes you have to be careful for it not to sprout. And seeds are super unreliable because they have no official expiration date so you may be buying seeds that are a decade old and you won't know until it's too late. I've personally got onions, potato, tomato (regular and cherry) and leek all regrown from scraps (in the potato case it actually started growing in the kitchen so we had to either plant it or throw it away).
Hi from Flint, Mi here... I have to say, I'm glad I have you!!!! I started watching in March, and pretty much did everything you told me to! I was kinda waiting for you to post this!! My garlic will live in one of my raised tomato beds this winter! Cleaning the bed this weekend, planting garlic Monday or Tuesday, tucking them in and wishing them well. So excited to see it next year!!! Thanks for a great first time experience and walking us through everything!! My freezer is almost full, my pantry is overflowing with home canned goodness, and my heart is filled with joy!! Thanks for EVERYTHING!! Happy gardening and HAPPY HARVEST, Y'ALL!!!!
@@pamelaanderson249 I'm actually in the Township, just near Bishop. I'm lucky enough to have well water. They've said it's safe, but I have friends that live a few miles away hooked to flint city water, and they still don't trust it. In past years, he filled 5-gallon jugs with well water from the hose at his mom's, who was also in the township so he could water when it didn't rain. Mom passed away last year, so he didn't put in a garden but he's working on it this year and also thinking of a pond for collecting rainwater, but until then, he'll just fill up at my house.
Thank you! Needed this refresher! We used to grow it at our apartment in town, then moved to the woods and build our homestead. During all that we never got to really plant until this summer....now its time for garlic planting!
I just ordered 3 varieties of hardneck garlic from your store. Along with MORE seeds! I can’t stop. 🤪 I looooove garlic so I am super excited to grow my own!
First time planting garlic. I have 2 types and now I just need Luke's expertise of how & when to plant & how & when to harvest. Super excited because I know Luke will guide me right!!
We lost some bulbs last year (1st year growing), but managed to harvest around 15 bulbs from the approx. 20 I planted. We consumed garlic scape paste (scapes and olive oil blended in the ninja), then started in on the garlic. I only saved 2 bulbs for re-planting. the new ones I bought for planting are so tiny in comparison. I want to plant a lot more this year, but it was really hard not eating those last two I grew.
Received some chesnok red garlic in the mail today from you along with trifecta plus. Looking forward to planting them within the next few weeks here in zone 7b. Also looking forward to receiving different garlic varieties I ordered the other day, duganski being 1 variety. Plan on using 2 garden beds this year as I share the wealth with my kids and friends. Nothing is as easy to grow in the garden as garlic is. If you viewers haven’t grown it yet, they need to try it! 🧄
Will be ordering garlic soon. I have ordered seeds several times, always with good results! Thanks, migardener, for providing a great product at an affordable price! 👍
my garden, while looking good, didnt produce very well. thought about quitting, but decided HECK, GARDENING IS FUN!!! so i planted the garlic a couple of days ago. waiting for MI Gardener store to restock for next season!!!
Thank you so much for this video, just seeing it popped up helps me keep my gardening timelines 😆 Your channel has seriously been a key factor in improving my garden. Thank you so much!
I'm trying my hand at several organic garlic types from the grocery because of how expensive the seed garlic was that wasn't already sold out... If it fails, I'll try again next year. Here's to always learning.
Good morning, Luke. I very much appreciate all your videos and have really learned a lot from them. I'm in NW Ohio and would like to plant garlic in containers (10 gal grow bags) would I plant deeper than 2 inches? And, would planting them the first week of October be too soon? Thank you, Mary
I've failed with garlic 3 years running and had given up, but thanks to this video, I have renewed hope, as I can now see that I was doing everything wrong! Thank you 😊 Going to order my seed garlic today 🌱
Look at that sunny warm day! My garden and everyone else's around here froze hard on 9/3! Even if hooped and covered!! Snowed here as well in Montana. Lost most everything but the cruciferous and root vegies. The one thing that shocked me was the artichoke!! My first year growing it and it had no problems!! Will be eating them this weekend!! Where did I get my seeds? Yep right here from Luke! In 40 years of gardening here we have never had a freeze this early so winter is looking scary!!
HI Luke, my husband and I watch you all the time on our tv youTube channel. We love how informative you are. I watched how you plant garlic, so I ordered some and got it planted yesterday. I know i'm late doing this, but I have chopped up leaves on top to keep the cloves from freezing. Thanks again.
Haha I just came inside from planting my garlic from MIGardener, then I saw this video lol. Turns out I did it correctly. Thanks for the tip of when to mulch, I wasn't sure about that.
Interesting, I am in Northern BC Canada and have a friend who grows beautiful hard neck garlic(she sells and does seminars on it). She plants Sept 23 every year. Which is a few weeks after last frost. She does mulch as sometimes we have chinooks in winter that melts the snow cover.
About two weeks ago, I noticed that I had three bulbs of elephant garlic that I'd bought, but forgotten that I'd had. I was really worried because they'd started drying and were looking a little wrinkled. Having (then) just watched a couple of your other garlic videos, I decided to plant them in my garden box where I'd just cleared out my lettuce. Yesterday, I noticed that I had a few poking up through the ground. I know that's not ideal, but I'm happy that I gave it a try and am having a bit of success. Thanks for the great content on this channel.
I’m experimenting by trying to grow store-bought garlic in Mississippi Coast heat. A month later, I’ve got lots of scapes. Wish me luck! I’ll plant properly in the Fall.
I am new to growing garlic; haven't actually done it yet. I've been gardening for 20+ years, each year is more successful than the one before. I am in NE Wisconsin, I have never mulched my garden. You mention animal bedding for mulch - is that small animal? The only product I find is pine or cedar, not necessarily cheap and I don't want to add the acidity to my garden soil?? Am I mistaken? Thanks for your videos, I learn a lot from you!
Just received my garlic from MIGardener and the bulbs are beautiful. Can’t wait to plant them! I have to do pots because I’m not getting any sun in my garden now ☹️ and I can put the pots in my front yard 👍🏻😊
I ordered garlic from you last year. Harvest was good. This was my first time growing garlic. One thing I found is, use less home grown fresh garlic than store bought garlic in my recipes.
I planted mine about a week or two ago - after storing it in the refrigerator for two months. I looked out there today, and it's coming up! It's the third week of October, so I hope I didn't plant it too early for western Georgia, southwest of Atlanta.
I did not know about the sprout inhibitor. We bought 2 hard neck bulbs from you this year, got them in the ground yesterday. Thanks for the clarification on the first frost thing, because we had a couple frosts and a freeze. Thumbs up.
I planted garlic for the first time this year. I'm so excited to see how it turns out. There's just one question I have, how often do you have to water them? Zone 6b
Thank you so much for the lesson. I've been trying to grow them unsuccessfully. The start to grow tops then they turn yellow roots. Thanks for telling us about how deep 1-1/2 " deep, I've also grew them in water and it produced lovely large long roots then I transplanted them into soil in large pot. However, they did not survive very long. Is it because I planted the roots too deep? I also tried planting like you did directly into the soil in my pot and the sprouted and grew tops but eventually leaves turned yellow no matter too much or less water . Or maybe too shallow on very deep pot. How often to water for growing in pots. Can you do a video on correct way to grow garlic in pots.? Thank you. I live and use garlic daily and can be expensive especially organic and I want to grow my own.
What part of Illinois? Just curious as to your timing for planting!
Can I buy some from you?
What month do you plant your garlic?

I just moved to Colorado this past January I go outside to plant potatoes and I found garlic. How do I care for this gift?
