This is why machined plastic pens ALWAYS>injection moulded ones
Minor cracks in the plastic can be fixed with super glue. Place in vise for 24hrs. I’ve done it with a Montblanc and it works. You can see the cracks but you need a loupe. Costl less than 5.00 USD
Pilot is an amazing brand. Way above anything else from my experience so far. By far the best fountain pens/nibs. Haven't tried sailor though
Sailor rules! My #1 favorite fountain pen brand of the Big Three of Japan. Mainly because of the stellar nibs. My all-time favorite nibs, along with Aurora’s.

I was very saddened to have seen this video, I was very excited to buy a new pilot custom 823 and as is normal in the plastic, cracks can appear, but that there is no spare part at an affordable price... it does not seem normal to me. Thanks for sharing your experience, and I'm so glad it had a happy ending.
Hi Alan, this story strikes an instant chord with me. I had bought my only PC 823, an amber one with the M nib four years ago from Goulet. I always took good care of it (as I do with all my pens) and was extremely happy with it all along. I had only twice disassembled it to clean thoroughly, despite only changing inks in the pen just once.
However just a year ago, the Vac-filling system failed and the pen no longer fills. I was baffled about what went wrong. Then upon inspection, I noticed that there was a full 1 cm long visible crack in the end of the barrel right where the turning knob begins. I was heartbroken. I still feel certain that it happened for no fault of mine. But I quite regret disassembling the pen at all. In my case, at any rate, it was completely unnecessary to do so. And I think most owners of the pen would probably be better off sticking to one ink in the pen and resisting the urge to change inks and disassembling to clean as a result of that.
Because it was then past three years since the date of purchase, I never contacted Pilot. I occasionally think of replacing the pen by buying another amber 823, this time with my usually preferred B nib. But I haven’t yet done that.

Because of stories like that I've completely lost any trust in injection moulded pens, they are just soooo fragile. I've moved almost exclusively to machined acrylic/metal pens, much more sturdy.
Ha! Well you certainly made out better than I did. I had the same problem, but in my case, I was the cause of the cracks i.e. I was doing my "pre-ink" clean n flush on new 823 and dropped the pen. Spoke to my retailor (Pen Chalet) about replacement parts and like you, was referred to Pilot. Received the same answer you did. But ended up purchasing another 823 for almost the same amount that pilot wanted to charge me for the barrel and nib assembly. So, you definitely made out!
Thanks to you, I also became a Pilot fan. Awesome customer service wow, good for you! Do you have/like Pilot Silvern or Tsumugi (I can't remember sorry the correct name)? I only found it in videos from stores and one review from a Vintage similar from OdE youtuber. Amazon has it less expensive than ebay or any other seller but takes several weeks to arrive (I'll expect mine by August...cross fingers won't take longer). Thank you for sharing, such a happy end with your Pilot 823😍
I had a similar incident of cracking with my amber 823 cracking but mine was near nib, same Goulet referred me to Pilot, who had me mail it to them and they replaced it free as well. Like your tho it did take some time .
It is indeed a happy ending for your Pilot 823. I didn’t even realise that the Pilot 14k gold nib would fit in a PenBBS 456!

Do you think the crack was a fluke, or do you you think you’ll need to do something different with your new one to keep it from cracking like the first?
I think it was from me overtightening the blind cap. I know I have a "heavy hand" when it comes to these things.
As I said in my own post here, I think people should refrain from disassembling to clean. There is a real risk of the tendency of over tightening which is almost certain to cause cracking, if not the first time, then surely soon enough. I’ve heard and read of many instances of the PC 823’s barrel cracking.
@@sajjadhusain4146 is that a quality issue with 823 or is it because of disassembling??
@@BOBO-wq9mx I’m starting to suspect that it’s partially perhaps a quality control issue, because I’ve heard of just a few cases of owners saying that they had not ever disassembled the pen but cracks had nevertheless developed.

Going to argue the 823 has a flawed design and subpar materials. Mine cracked, and I'm pulling the nib and putting it into a 743. The body materials compared to the rest of the Custom Line up are flawed and weak. Swapping the body will only result in another cracked body down the line al la TWSBI. Mine cracked at the other end. This is frustrating given the price point. They offered me a free body swap. I turned em down. The crack will just happen again. What's odd is that the clone pens (Wingsung 699, PenBBS, Asvine) don't crack with similar construction.
Was the broad that wet in the actual 823?
