Great playing, and yes good instrument.... though it’s lacking the ‘bottom’ a bit, it comes quite close to the uppers and high-mids of the track of an upright

Yes. Doesn't have the fullness and weight of a good bass viol. A bit "lean." But a nice sound and very usable if it suits your style.

I think the bottom sounds amazing - more of an electric than acoustic sound, which means it can do things an acoustic cannot. I don’t think the goal of this instrument is to replace the acoustic bass any more than an acoustic bass can replace a fretless electric bass. Rather, it’s a different set of colors while it also lacks many physical limitations of the acoustic, all of which gives you different harmonic and linear options that just wouldnt be possible or practical on an acoustic.
