Midland MXT575 Hidden Install how-to

- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- The Midland MXT575 is one of the most anticipated GMRS radios to be released in a long time! In this video I show you how to hide the base unit out of site and run and extension to cleanly connect the handset for use on the trail and put it away when not in use. Thank you to my good friend James for this awesome idea.

Almost complete. Came back to see how you got the radio up there, so need to get some velcro tape and tidy up the wires. I changed install slightly, putting the extension in a $25 organizer box instead of in the factory plastic. Thanks for the video!
I have a 24 Land Cruiser and just got the radio trying to figure out where to set it up; enjoyed the video.
Definitely want to do the hidden option like this. This was the sleekest install I’ve seen for a Jeep/Truck radio
I have a I-com-4100A mounted in my glove box, under the vent box. I also have a CB as well. I don't have a GMRS yet. The remote speakers for both are mounted on the driver side window pillar. Got to have my coms.... Nice vid!
I've been thinking about getting this unit and wondering where I would mount it. Love this idea and wouldn't have thought of it without this video.
There is some space in the middle between the two front foot wells. Anything put there however would be subject to dust, dirt, maybe water. I am putting mine where you did along with my power break mod. Big space there! Thanks for a great video. Your videos motivate me to do my own work. You make it all look so easy.
Thanks so much!!
Great video! Perfect location and much simpler install than one might think. Perfect for my 2020 Gladior and 2011 Wrangler. Thanks
Great Video, I picked up a Midland MXT575 and installed it in my Wrangler just like this, thanks to your video. Worked out great!
Glad it helped
You had me cracking up when you said 'amongst all the other things on the gladiator"
Thanks for showing the location for the module.
Great video, I installed mine in my 21 4Runner a week ago. I mounted mine under my drivers seat. I like the cat 5 cable you used instead of what I have, so I just ordered one from Amazon.
I saw this at the AZ overland show last year. Been waiting for it to come out
I just got my MXT575 for my JL that should be completed being manufactured in the next two weeks. In my JK I mounted my MXT275 in the center console. But the MXT575 runs a lot hotter so I like where you put it. It will give it more airflow. Maybe sometime you can do an in-depth video on its operation. We never could get the privacy channels to work very well and we have a lot of chatter all over the place. I “think” we got it to work, but there was a huge delay and all of the conversations. Made it so we turned it off. Another great video!
Matt! I finally installed my MXT 575 today! Going on our first camping trip of the year later this week so I figured let's get it installed! I went back and found this video and did the stealth install exactly as you showed! It turned out great and we are ready to hit the road! Keep making the great content!😢
Awesome! I just did this in our new Gladiator yesterday.
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures Oh you guys got a new Gladiator? When are we going to see it? Can't wait to see the build! We have built our Gladiator by watching you guys. We got the Clayton 3.5 overland plus lift because of your recommendation. We love watching the videos of what gear you are currently carrying on trips. It gives us ideas on what we want to get.
I showed it in a recent video on how to properly build a Jeep. That was our announcement video with what our plans are for it.
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures I'll have to go back and watch. It will be fun to watch the build process.
Very good video on both the Midland MXT500 and 575. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
0:51, "...MXT575 one of the most anxiously awaited radio to come out in the market..." FYI, please be aware, anxious as in anxiety is a very negative emotion, it implies fear, dread, uneasiness and the like. Anxious comes from the Latin word spelled, angere, meaning to choke and strangle; not something to look forward to.
Thanks for the grammar lesson.
Nice ideas on how to do this. Like that you put the antenna up high on the vehicle.
Outstanding antenna and power cable routing. Very clean. Another professional video. Thanks!
Thank you very much!
Thanks for another awesome video man. Just bought my first wrangler this year. I live in central kentucky so to complete the KAT is definitely on my bucket list. However, my son just turned 6 and I definitely see us venturing out to the ozarks sooner rather than later. Really enjoy your content and have gotten so many Ideas just by watching your stuff. My goal is to invest in a rooftop tent eventually. For now, were using a ground tent. Sure beats seeing him grow up with an iPad in his face. Keep up the good work!
I was bummed when they came out with this not even two weeks after I bought the MXT275! 😂
Thanks for all the great tips! I've been looking for a type-c fast charging extension cable with a flush mount without any luck. Have you found anything yet?
If and when I get a base unit, I would probably just do the 275 but that looked like a great place to install. I'll just bring it to you to do....lol
Now to find that mic holder for the JK…
Nice vid!
I had one in my JK. Easy to find on Amazon.
Just glad I haven't gotten a 500! Will be getting the 575 instead 👍
love midland but wish they had done the MXT575 with a detachable face instead. Doing all the programming through the mic will be tedious. I like to see an interface screen personally. I currently have the MXT400 and bought it right before the 500 came out so I am sticking with the 400 for now. Keep up the good videos!
They made a new mic, the MXMC01. It has a bigger display that shows complete words instead of abbreviations.
What is the external speaker you have? Great video and great install. Thanks for the ideas.
Exactly where I put my 275 except I mounted the extension cable in the access panel right under the steering wheel. The thought was to keep it out of the wife’s side so she didn’t jacked it up 😉accidentally of course.
I just made sure today that I get notified when it is available!! Thanks for the review.
I like the hidden setup! For those of us with a JL manual transmission, we don't have that nice pass-through on the drivers side. Do you ever pick up a lot of static and have to change channels often? It seems like I do way too often, I have the MTX275 with the same antenna that you do.
Got the MXT575 last week. Got back from our honeymoon yesterday and now I have to figure out where this will fit in the new Bronco. Didn't realize it was so much bigger than the MXT275. The MXT275 was mounted inside the center console, but I don't think the 575 will fit there. Will see if there is a place similar to what you have in the gladiator or maybe the glove box. Otherwise, I may have to begrudgingly attach it to the side of the center console and have it be readily visible to prying eyes.
Absolutely I’m gonna hide it! I just got an email from Midland advising it’s dropping next week. 💯🇺🇸
I'm on the first release list. And yes it's getting hidden.
I guess I am a li'l ol' fashioned... In years past I had a CB mounted to the passenger side of the transmission hump of my truck and my ham radio was located under the seat with the head unit remotely mounted on the dash, but with my Tacoma, that just does not seem to be a suitable location, so I am replacing the CB with a bearcat cmx760, and I will be mounting the head unit for the ham radio in the center console cubby (below the HVAC controls) I am also planning on getting a GMRS radio so to keep with the remote mounting and clean install, I am looking at the MTX275, though now that the 575 is out, I am considering it (most likely not). I do not like the limitations of the midland radios, but to date they are the only mic controlled GMRS radios I have found. The bodies of all three radios will likely be mounted under the driver seat. To prevent them from being damaged in the event of flooding, I have in the past mounted them inside a plastic tub that I cut down to fit under the driver seat (I had my 706mk2g mounted that way for about a decade with no problems, even with minor flooding of the old truck) on one occasion. I figure if I am flooded up to the bottom of my seat, I have bigger problems than potential loss of my radios. All three mics can then be mounted to my center console with retracting lanyards to keep the cords under control and away from my feet. The only problem I am finding with the mic mounting location is that you have to be able to lean forward to reach the mic, and in my old ranger I found that on occasion when wheeling the seatbelt would lock and hold me against the seat where I could not reach the mic. (That, I suppose, is still far better than the seatbelt allowing me to bounce around and get bruised up hitting structural panels, but I have never found a location where I can mount them and always have easy access regardless of position.)
My plan B for mounting is to mount the radios on the back wall of the cab after removing the plastic trim panels that Toyota has behind the back seat, though in either case, my power distribution for in cab electrical accessories is intended to be a custom panel located under or behind the rear seat. It would include a fused 40amp master input, Anderson Power Pole connectors for 12 circuits, each with independent fuses and LED indicators.
Interesting and intriguing video. The blatantly obvious mid-life crisis is a bit distracting but I enjoy your work. Thank you for your service. Well done
Well since I've been having fun with my hair since high school I'd argue the midlife crisis comment. 😂😂
@OzarkOverlandAdventures that's the point. You're not in high school anymore.....hence...the whole childish hobbies and behaviors. It's ok...I get it.
@@321southtube If you want to be a boring old man you go right ahead. That's not my style. I hope to be 80 with purple hair jumping out of airplanes.
Thanks Matt! Great video, just ordered!
Do you have to worry about heating from low air circulation? I don’t have a jeep but wondering when I install. Great video
I’ll be finding out very soon. I don’t think it will be an issue.
Nice job, very informative!
Most likely you'll not have a problem with the 575 installed where you've placed it. But, the 575 is long enough that the rear of it comes very close to the steering wheel shaft. And, the damn shaft is square, which increases the possibility of jamming the steering if the unit comes loose. You might think about adding suspenders to your Velcro belt in the form of a zip tie, or two, around the 575 and the mount. There's an other location under the dash on my 2018 JLUR with enough room for the 575. Look on the driver's side (door side) just above the left plastic trim ... about 12 inches above the floor. There is a metal crossbar running for-and-aft right above the trim piece that would provide a solid mount ... except that it really needs a fabricated bracket to mount it well. Mine will most likely be installed under the driver's seat right where the heating/cooling ducts vent.
SOLD!! I'm doing this.
I like being able to put out of sight
Great video! What mount did you use to mount the antenna to the light bar? I like that option!
Nice work! Great ideas.
Hey Matt!! Thanks for the awesome video! Sorry if I didn’t read back far enough through the comments to find out but do you have any concerns regarding heat dispersion when installing in that spot?
None at all
Love your channel. Have learned a lot! Thanks
I have never had any type of 2 way radio except walkie talkies. I just applied for my GMRS license. Do you ever worry about your radio overheating being hidden? You already had your wiring in place so what size fuse did you use for this? A 15amp? Did you do an add a fuse or put a fuse in an empty slot in the fuse box? Do you have a link for the external speaker? I can watch your install videos for basic info only as I have a 2016 Chevy Colorado Z71, not a Jeep. I really like the idea of hiding the radio and using an extension for the hand held speaker cable.
Transmitters - *especially* 50 watt transmitters - get HOT and NEED to breathe. If they are in a hot or even just enclosed space (they generate a lot of their own heat) they are highly likely to shut down unexpectedly, or even fail outright. If you transmit much (especially trail leaders) they can get almost too hot to touch. Make sure your base unit gets lots of airflow, especially above it, or it could easily have a bad day. Out of sight should be less important than air flow, because without air flow you may not have a working radio, in which case the only thing out of sight gets you is that you don't have to look at a dead radio.
I will keep an eye on it and check it. Solid advice.
Great install - can I get a link to the extension cable? I don't find any plug-in female ends like you used on Amazon ...
Link is in the description
Hi Matt, my buddy and I just installed our MXT575 units this weekend using the same location for the heat unit that you did under the steering column. One thing we noticed is that it seems the steering shaft, or part of it, hits the head unit as we turn the steering wheel and cannot figure out which part it hitting. Have you run into this with positioning of the head unit mounting at all?
Great explanation. Thanks. Where do you folks mount your antenna? I have Gladiator
There's several places you can mount it. Midland makes several mounts for it. My wife has hers on her hood. Mine is on top of my light bar mount.
You noted many similarities between the MXT500 and MXT575. As I understand it, the 500 is one of the very few, perhaps the only one, Midlands that allow storing additional repeater channels beyond the very limited eight with regard to differing PL tones, bandwidth, etc. Supposedly, you can add up to 7 additional repeater channels in the unused slots for channels 8 thru 14. While not a lot, this might be enough to actually make these radios useful if you plan on using repeaters in different towns served by repeaters using differing PL's. Is this also true of the 575?
They are the same radio with the same features. Only the location of the controls are different.
I have a awesome idea of what to do with the HUGE boxy 500…. 🙋🏻♂️ I have a spot for it.
Can I see how you ran the wire from your antenna down your K&C pillar . I also have a JK and almost your setup . Thanks
Hello! Brilliant install. I wondered if you could please share the links with me for the exact CAT5 and USB-C Extension cables you used? Can’t seem to find them on eBay. Really appreciate it! ;-)
Exactly what I’m hoping to find. Brilliant secret install! Love this.
Unfortunately the passthrough access port through the firewall isnt available on JL's and JT's that have the manual 6spd transmission - that port is filled in with clutch hardware. I ended up powering my MTX275 to the ignition accessory wire on the interior aux switch harness
Do you have a video installing your external speaker?
I have a 2014 Honda CRV, looking for mounting options for the 575
Good work! Where is the external speaker mounted??
I have the rubigrid from Bulletpoint that the speaker is mounted to
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures ohhhh so it’s on the dash. I missed it somehow.
That's exactly how I have my 275 mounted, including the RJ45 extension port location. If i were to upgrade to the 575, do you know if the power cable is exactly the same as the one with the 275? Would be great to just swap out the base unit.
the power on the 275 has a plug for the 12 volt outlet. If you cut yours off and ran it directly to the battery like I did, I'm not sure I would use the same wires as the ones on the 575 are a heavier gauge than the 275. When I installed my MXT400 I pulled all the wires from the 275 and ran the wires from the 400.
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures Thanks, that makes sense since the 575 is so much more powerful. It also looks like the mic is the same as the 275, but I imagine there are differences in the internals.
Just purchased this, any issues with the weatherbands in that location? I am lacking reception but the hills of WV are not conducive at times.
I don't see a link to your external speaker looks like a rectangular box in the center of your dashboard. Most of the external speakers are all square I like the rectangular shape is that a computer sound bar??
Did you power directly from the battery or from a 12V power feed inside the cab?
The 500 and 575 have to be wired to the battery
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures Appreciate this info! Can they go to the Auxiliary switches?
Matt - great install video. I just got my new Midland radio and getting ready to install. Who's microphone holder did you use?
Thanks!! It’s just one I found on Amazon.
looking to possible get this radio. I purchased my truck a year ago and it has NMO mount on the roof. Is there a way to trace and see where that wire on that mount goes?
What’s the info on the external speaker ?
Do you also run a HAM unit in addition to your GMRS? I'm out here in AZ and am outfitting my 20' F150 for daily driver and overlanding. Curious if I should run both for the desert. Gonna be at Expo West so I'll swing by to say hi
Only GMRS for us.
I watch someone else who was talking about the 275 and they said it had like a 140 something privacy code or channel. If that is true why does the 575 have less Channel or privacy code. 12-02-23
They have the same number of channels and privacy codes.
Great video. Just wondering how your coax gets from the bed to the cab? Is there an existing penetration or did you have to drill a hole for the coax?
The antenna is on the light bar at the front.
Hey Matt, is your external speaker specific to the Midland 575 or just generic? Once I install the radio, I don't want to be trying to get back in there to plug in the speaker! LOL Thanx again for all the great videos by you and Cara.
It’s just a cheap speaker I got off Amazon
How did it go with the Velcro, I'm a big fan of that stuff but I've heard the gmrs radios get pretty warm and mite end up coming undone.
It’s been awesome. Zero issues.
Do you ever come to Michigan? I have a 2022 Subaru Forester Sport I'm trying to figure out where to install the Midland 50 Watts unit before I even purchase one first because $400.00 is a lot for something like that.
My wife knows your name….. must be a good channel .. 🤔 love this channel and what your doing Mat! Shit that’s her calling now!
😂😂 thanks.
Any issues with hitting the steering linkage when turning?
None at all.
Where do you hear the person that will respond to you. Microphone or the base?
Either or both. It’s a setting.
I picked up two of the mic extension cables you have linked and neither one works with my Midland MXT575.
Hmmm. I wonder why.
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures It works perfectly when plugged in directly at the unit. The interesting thing is I have one in my JL wired to the factory aux switch that according to Jeep is good for 15a load. My other one is in my 06 4Runner and is wired to an always on 15a circuit. The both will not turn on when plugged into the extension.
So the one in my 4Runner magically started working. The one in my JL never worked. I got another one but in the 1m length and it works. FYI the 1 meter length is the perfect and ideal length for a JL/JT install with the jack on the passenger side where you put it and the main unit under the steering column. Fits so well that you don't need to coil and/or hide any extra cable. Don't even need to zip tie anything.
What bracket are you using for the antenna? I have a KC HiLites Gravity bar as well.
Love the setup what bracket do you have the ghost antenna on and did that wire come with the ghost antenna?
It's a bracket from Rugged Radios. That wire comes with the radio.
Clean!
Is your power lead hooked straight to battery?
Yes. With the higher wattage radios they require a direct battery connection.
Thank you for posting this now I know to wait for the 575 to come out ... I was going to get the $500 this payday
@Ozark Overland Adventures Thank you for the video. Getting ready to do this install, but I heard from another owner, that when he installed in the exact same spot, as he turned his steering wheel all the way the steering column would come in contact with the radio, have you experienced this ?
Also,
Any more tips for the install or additional accessories that improve the radio ?
Thanks
We have two installed there and neither of us have issues. I did not use the bracket to install it there, just the radio.
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures maybe he used some really thick, velcro... He said he didnt use the bracket... so I'm not sure why he had an issue. I will give it a try, thanks.
Can you show another picture of where you mounted under the steering wheel.
There's no way to do that on UA-cam. Once you pull the panel off under the steering wheel you'll see where it goes.
What's is the antenna mount that you used on your Gladiator. Using the light mount above the windshield. Can you please help me with this problem..
Thanks again..
it's by Rugged Radios.
I don’t physically see a difference between the 275 (which I have) versus the 575. Could you explain the difference between the two..?
I have a 2020 Toyota tundra and I still have yet to find a good location to hide my unit for the 275.
Size and power are key differences. 50 watts vs 15.
Doesn't the antenna need to be grounded?
It is
What about the airbag? Isn't the mic partially in the way?
Not something I'm worried about.
Patiently waiting on the launch of the 575 you know they will sell dozens of these because of your channel bummed no discount code.
Pretty sure all 15 channels are compatible with lower powered handheld radios, not just 7 channels.
Depends on the FRS radio. I wheeled some guys a couple years ago and we could only communicate on channels 1-7.
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures Could only happen if they had the old original 14 channel FRS radios.
What bracket are you using for the ghost antenna? Great video btw
Came here for this as well did you ever figure it out
What light is that?
This Jeep needs Armorlite
Thanks for this video. I signed up for the notification on this radio for the release next week. I have the 275 right now mounted inside the center console. What external speaker are you using and do you like it?
It’s just one I found on Amazon for like $15. It works great.
Ok Great! Thank you!
About how much range do u get
Where is your external speaker mounted at?
Up in the middle of the dash.
Is there a need to tune the antenna?
There is not. It's just plug and play.
Please tell me what mount you used for thr ghost antenna off of the kc lights i have the same set up snd can not find it anywhere. I wrote you on fb and nothing, need your help...
Honestly I have no idea. LOL. Someone gave it to me and I don't know where it came from.
I live in AR and cannot find any of these places in the Ozarks… I also cannot find a jeep club to join or any group that I could go on trips with like yours. Any suggestions?
The best Facebook group to join is Natural State Overland. Also look up my videos on the Ozark Overland Adventure Trail. The full route file is in the video descriptions and shows you exactly where to go.
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures thank you
When you have a MXT500 and know the MXT575 would be better for your installation........dang.
I don't have a radio installed in my Land cruiser yet but I'm thinking I'm going to put it back near your batteries that way I can hook up front or back
You can always sell the 500.
I have the kc lights but the antenna bracket looks like the cowl light bracket repurposed??? I want to mount my antenna the same way but not sure of your bracket???
You are correct. It's one I just repurposed. I don't even remember where it came from.
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures I might need your help installing the antenna 😎😉
Great video btw! I will be installing exactly the way you showed in the video!👊
Would this work on a JK?
I think so.
It won't overheat encapsalated like that?
Sorry , my question was already asked. Ok let us know how it goes when its gets really hot outside.
I ran it for two full days with lots of use this weekend. No issues at all.
Does this radio allow you to communicate with others that have a CB?
No. No radio can do that.
So I would have to get a separate CB unit, correct?
@@aaronally8276 CB is dead. I removed mine years ago. Don’t waste your money.
Ok thanks for the advice. I used to have a CB way back in the day in my hunting truck but I haven’t been in the loop in a while. I just recently bought a 2020 Gladiator and I’m getting back into the scene.
Might have missed it in the video, but was this sponsored or did you pay for the MXT575? This is a standard Midland "system on a chip" (SOC) receiver. If you're looking for the best TX / RX, then a superheterodyne receiver is the way to go. I have the Wouxun KG-1000G. The KG-1000G is superheterodyne, has a better feature set than the MXT575, has a removable face plate so you can remote the receiver, has controls on the mic, and is $30 less than the Midland retail price to retail price. With the OOA discount code; the Midland is $10 less, but I'm sure if you call Buy Two Way Radios, they'll price match for $10.
If you have a recent year (2015 & up, I think) Ford F-Series crew cab truck with household power receptacles in the cab, then the power inverter is under the single rear seat. On my 2021 F350 Tremor, the power inverter is fused at 60amp. Perfect place to tap & power the receiver. Mounted the receiver to the cab wall behind the seat. Wouxun provides a 15' extension cable for use between the receiver and faceplate. Bullet Proof Diesel sells rear third brake light antenna mounts for the cab of Ford, Chevy/GMC, & Ram. It uses the hole in the cab that is already behind the third brake light. Comes with an OEM style seal to keep water out and gives a super OEM look. Installing this way kept every wire inside the cab of my Tremor with no grommet fishing. Sweet, clean install.
I run a icom 706
