- Broadway producer Max Bialystock and his partner Leo try to convince an eccentric stage director to helm their upcoming play.
This scene features Zero Mostel, Gene Wilder, Christopher Hewett and Andreas Voutsinas. Written and directed by Mel Brooks.
"They can't tell a thing without your wig, as far as I'm concerned you're only half-dressed". The wonderful Andréas Voutsinas, stealing the limelight amongst a cast of shining stars in this scene.
He was brilliant. I couldn't see anybody else in Hollywood doing that part. Cal dumage 🤣
Voutsinas was also romantically involved with Jane Fonda in the early 60's. You wouldn't know it by how convincingly he played Carmen Ghia 😆😆
@@eightinches3671 yes when I pulled up a bio on him a short while back I read that and I think he and her were an acting classes together or something like that. The producers is my go-to movie when I need a good laugh. It's brilliant. 😁

I actually have the remake because I saw it for fifty cents somewhere and I bought it and I didn't think it was that bad but we both know the original can never be topped. I thought Matthew Broderick was a good choice to play Gene Wilder's part but that's a matter of opinion. Springtime for Hitler and Germany 🤣🤣

Yeah I saw the remake first, and was blown away with how much funnier the original was.
@@jamesboulger8705 The original is utter perfection. But when I saw the original broadway musical with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick that was so damned near perfection it might as well have been.
@@CaptainLumpyDog I may have overstated myself. I am not in the camp where remakes are automatically bad. There were elements I likes better in both, and obviously Nathan Lane was perfect for that role.

This scene is pure cinematic/comedy magic from all performers, but the actor playing Roger should have won an oscar! Perfect comedy timing and reactions! 👏 Well done that man! That scene is his!
That is the brilliant Christopher Hewitt who played Lawrence the Butler on the last season of Fantasy Island and Mr. Belvedere on the eponymous sitcom.
That's just as well, because the actor playing Roger on Broadway won a Tony for his performance.

I was fortunate to get to know Mr. Wilder late in his life. I picked him up at his home for a Wonka Project we worked on. He ran some lines from films he had done. He charmed the audience. Mr Mostel was a force of Nature. The definitive Tevye in Fiddler. I once had a boss who told me that he-my( boss) was the inspiration for the film The Producers. Gene could not corroborate that. Gene was a great man. I miss him.story.

When Roger came out from behind the curtain in a dress, that's one of the funniest thing I've ever seen in a movie. Most people would not expect to see a man with a dress on. What made it even more funny was that he still looked so masculine, even with that dress on. Carmen Ghia looks more feminine in pants than Roger in the dress.
And he’s so unexpectedly tall that his first appearance kind of startled you, which adds a lot of humor.

LOVE that line! Hard for me to believe that's Chrisopher Hewett AKA Mr. Belvedere. Then again, I never watched this film until YEARS after I saw my last episode of that show, and I never realized it until I looked him up.
Max mocking Carmen's mannerisms was hilarious.
Zero Mostel in a bit of off camera improv, grabbed Carmen's crotch during the elevator ride.
I like the way Carmen inspects the statue of Hermes for damage after it gets a little "manhandling"

Decades later in Stir Crazy ...with Richard Pryor trying to light the match and the other prisoner grabbing his wrist to bring the flame to him..now we know where the inspiration came from for the Stir Crazy scene.

How as an actor do you repeatedly not light a match so convincingly and then light one for the end of the scene and stay in character? Maybe many takes or just genius...
And the one he did manage to finally light looked so wilty and sad!

Stereotypes aside, as an LGBT man, I think Mel Brooks deserves credit for helping bring the issue of gay people in the theater out into the open. We've always been there, but for years nobody was allowed to acknowledge it. Mel's reaction to that issue was the same as every other controversial issue he deals with - "We all know it's there, so why can't we joke about it?"
As hetero, I actually felt a little guilty about it, particularly Mostel's behind-the-back mocking (which, to me, really isn't funny). But it is undeniably funny as hell. And the remake is even more over the top
As a Gay man who hates you LGBT don't talk for us all when you're so blind to reality, he was mocking us the us way he did to everyone. He made us laugh at the stupidity that we are and didn't do anything of what you said lmmfao he was laughing at you, like most of us 😂🤣

William Craig , oh for Christ sakes, it’s a movie. Everybody has to analyze to make themselves sound smart. It’s a funny movie, PERIOD.. .

this doesn't feel the same without "Keep it Gay".
And for me, this movie is perfect and the musical that came later is unwatchable.

If you like something, but more than one version of it exists, the version you experienced first will often be the defining one for you. My first encounter with Monty Python's Parrot Sketch was an audio recording of a stage performance where John Cleese just went wildly, hilariously, over the top. When I saw the original from the TV series I still thought it was funny, but it seemed kind of sedate by comparison.
Even though the deliveries were more deadpan, I was still laughing JUST as hard as the remake

Some scenes in Gene Wilder's films haven't aged as well as others, but I hope people can learn to look at these great movies through the lens of the time when they were written. Luckily, I've noticed a lot of people in their 20s like me seem to be realizing that we can't just trash old masterpieces just because they don't fit with our current mindset, so I don't think treasures like The Producers will ever be lost in time. ❤
This is a Mel Brooks film. It only stars Gene.
The scene wouldn't have been written as no one would believe someone had seen a man in a dress before. This scene is intended to show Leo naivete. If had been in the business longer he would have become accustomed to eccentric homosexuals. I don't think it offends gay people as much as remind them how the world has changed, and at least here they are out of the closet which is better than being invisible.

"My blanket! My blue blanket!" 🤣Mel at his best. And what a pack of great comedians. It's one of my fav' Brooks films with "Frankenstein Jr." and "Blazing Saddles". His latest movies was so disappointing. But when you begin as director with a musical comedy titled "Springtime For Hitler And Germany", you can hardly go higher! 😂
Yes, the two films you mentioned get all the attention, but for me this is Brooks' best film and one of my all-time favorites. This film has the funniest opening credits I've ever seen ("Hold me! Touch me!"), plus it won Mel the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
I think it's worth mentioning Dick Shawn, Kenneth Mars and Lee Meredith, too. All amazing, just not featured in this clip. I'm sure you know this already, but I'll mention it here just in case someone gets drunk and wanders into this comment section: Dustin Hoffman was originally cast as the Nazi, but some long-forgotten film called "The Graduate" was also casting at the time. When Hoffman got the role of Ben Braddock, Brooks allowed him to drop out of this film. And now all of the comment-lurkers know...😉
I've only seen the three Brooks films already mentioned. I did enjoy all of them. I've had people personally recommend "History of the World, Pt. 1", but I've honestly never read anything good about it (not that the critics carry any weight around here), and it's worth noting that a "History of the World, Pt. 2" never appeared. 🙃 "Spaceballs" has a following. As for the rest, well, the decline sets in. It sets in for virtually every artist that hangs around long enough. Except for The Beatles. The Beatles didn't decline, at least not when they were together as a group. Even their worst album is good.

@@WidescreenJunkie The Beatles get everywhere. That's why they are still the bests! 😂No, I didn't know that Dustin Hoffman was scheduled for the role. It's a fact that the following Brooks movies are pretty bad, except maybe "Silent Movie". Brooks did a lot of things, maybe too much. This may explain that between shows, television, cinema, production and his participation as an actor, he was going in the wrong direction for his films. In any case, he was a great entertainer et there is always something funny, even good in his worst films.

I liked the new Producers because of updates to scenes like this one, but Ferris Bueller didn’t hold a candle to Gene Wilder.

I love the understated (ahem) recognition shall we say of " gayness " ????? It's priceless. The acting, the costumes, and the timing are superb.
