Susan Wooldridge is such a wonderful actress, and so beautiful. I have always been perplexed as to why her talents weren't utilised to a greater extent. Her portrayal of Daphne Manners is both heartbreaking and uplifting. A truly wonderful artist. Thank you for posting this video.
It kind of boggles my mind that Susan Wooldridge is now 73 after watching this. She has had a long acting career, but I still think of her as the darling Daphne Manners.
We used to see the T.V. series of" The Raj Quartet " when it was telecaster by the Indian television in 1984. It was a fascinating experience. And it so happened that I took English literature for my masters. And now has all the four books of " The Raj Quartet " and read them. Today I am listening to Susan Wooldridge who acted as Daphne Manners with Art Malik and discovering a new person. So through out it's been a journey. Thank you for the video.
The books were great. I just re-watched this series a few weeks back. I came across something where it was mentioned that final scene showing Art Malik at his desk with Daphne Manners' photograph nearby was added by the director. I think the series ended with Parvati dancing, if I recall right? That final quiet portrayal of Art Malik at his desk makes it all the more heart-breaking when you think about the tragic trajectory of his path in life and how haunted he must have been.
1974 brought me from Bengaluru to Dal lake at Srinagar. The Raj Quartet + Staying On are old friends of mine. The screenwriting was impeccable - down to every detail from the RQ. Kudos all around.
Had no idea "Daphne"/ Susan Woodridge was so beautiful. Sorry she did not have the success she deserved. "T.J.I.T.C." is one of my MOST loved series. Saw her in something recently - a military/police woman. Glad to see this beautiful, talented actress is working. Best wishes, Susan & All! (Think I'm going to rewatch the series - AGAIN. 😀). Cheers!
The interviewer seems a tad indiscreet to me. Susan is a fantastic actress, and all the acting going on in The Jewel in the Crown is so naturalistic that one forgets this is not real life and becomes a dedicated voyeur into the past. Casting is perfect, and so is historic characterization and the use of music and camera movement. The director is a true master, who deeply understands every aspect of filmmaking. What a show, seldom equalled since!
I remember when Jewel in the Crown first played in the US on public broadcasting. I really enjoyed it but the story is so painful and sad and so many parts that it was difficult to watch then and it’s still difficult for me to watch now. That’s what happens when you have excellent writing and superb performers portraying the characters… It just broke my heart. So yeah, the acting was superb and Ms Wooldridge’s character was one of my favorites. She is so talented, she has such a subtle style... The nuances of her facial expressions, Her physical gestures and the way she carries herself oh my gosh… Everything she did just added such a richness to her work. I am an artist myself and I always appreciate the arts of other artist… I’m not an actress but art is art and with the understanding and appreciation of one who creates art I can say with bold confidence that she is remarkable!
Sad that Paul Scott never got to see the masterpiece made of his work or even the recognition for his historical fiction. The whole production really captured the essence of the books and the acting was top class.
These views on India about a mass of peoples, the high street of the Old Delhi, rhe smells the senses being attacked. The beggar & then the later the coming to terms of stereotyping would be completely out dated today even though they all exist. The view presented of India today is one of an emerging superpower of corporations & high tech.
"It wasn't the sights and sounds".... I'm thinking😂...she's talking about the smell! The smell is life. The smell is death. Nowhere on Earth smells like this but India.

She was superb in that role as were all the cast members.Great production!
Loved the scenes with Daphne and Lady Chatterjee
Thank you for the wonderful interview, it was nice to see and listen to the actress outside the Jewel in the Crown.
'Paul Scott gives it to you like a great big present. And she's all there.' yes.
Susan Wooldridge is simply gorgeous
I watched Jewel in the Crown as a young boy with my parents back in the 80ies. Daphne and Hari Kumars romance and its demise stayed with me.
The jewel in the crown is superb it becomes real. Susan was so authentic

Susan Wooldrige, a beautiful lady and fantastic in her role as Daphne in JITC.
She is so much more attractive in real life than the character she played in The Jewel In The Crown.
James Willett Daphne was beautiful. English! It was war time. The pictures of her were pretty good.
@@tommathew7684 she wasn't meant to be beautiful

the British have always known how to make high quality TV series
Great story, great production, great acting. I'm A huge fan!
I think Daphne Manners is pretty. Plain yes. But she was upper class. She was connected. I think the script was well written.
Was she upper class? I thought she was Upper MIDDLE class.

Let alone Staying On.
@@patriciarossman8653 Loved that one too.

Related topic: is there a link on UA-cam to the last 3 episodes, namely 12 through 14? I know that several people have been asking about this.
