If you are going to buy a landrover/rangerover make sure you get the one with the heated rear glass. This is to keep your hands warm in winter whilst you are pushing it.
When I was working at a BMW dealership in the 90s, we had so many complaints of excessive oil consumption that BMW fixed the problem in the typical German way. They changed the acceptable oil usage from 1 pint in 1200 miles to 1 quart in 390 miles. Problem solved!
Kids aren't uneducated, they're just operating from a lower set of standards...now every kid can easily be the valedictorian, problem solved, case closed, gavil swung! There isn't any problem that can not be easily solved by lowering the standards we all used to deem acceptable. Ask the Germans how they did things in the 1930's and 1940's with people they found to not meet their standards of excellence. In the world of government regulation and cars built to a price point instead of a high standard, all the PR and marketing teams of any manufacturer need to do to increase the perception of excellence and "reliability" is reduce the warranty coverage, blame the owners for not performing basic maintenance even if the dealer takes care of all basic maintenance and has documented it all, and then finally declare, "Look, most people own their cars for only an "x" amount of time and mileage. And most of our vehicles are leased. During that time frame, our vehicles are excellent! It's not nickel and dimed cost cutting engineering! (Screw those second and third owners who couldn't afford to buy new and take the hit in depreciation!)" Excellence is just a term the PR and marketing teams have used to sell their wares since day one. Thog's rock is a much better, durable, more luxurious rock than Thag's sandstone piece of slag. Thog even offers a limited warranty and free standard rock repairs for the first 3 hits. Excellence: For all the times you need to be hitting Thag in his sandstone head!
That V8 in the new style 740, BMW came out with a toolkit to replace the valve stem seals, my god what a chore! I love 1 Qt. in 390 miles, worse than a 60's Jag where the same amount of oil loss in 500 miles was acceptable!
Considering the reputation of all the manufacturers,and the cost of the vehicles new,these engines should all be damn near perfect. In this day and age,there is no excuse for making junk.
The car manufacturers don't make money by making bullet proof vehicles. Just imagine having a car run 200+k miles on regular maintenance. Imagine the energy and material saving.
Not sure what you mean about reputation. These manufacturers are known to make junky cars, especially Kia/Hyundai and some of the USDM brands. Euro usually has lots of electronics issues and Japan well is best for reliability (Mostly Toyota and Honda tho)
Cadillac put me off from American cars forever but depending on the Northstar they could be great. So long as the oil rings were installed correctly. My old boss had one one for 200 k before he sold it.All he had done was alternator at160k. Another co worker had one he went around 170 k ,no major issues. So it could be a great reliable car but was a crap shoot.
@@eac1235 I traded a Northstar powered Cadillac for a 2013 Lincoln. Mechanically it wasn't any better. But at least it didn't burn oil. That will be my last American luxury car.

NOT ENOUGH REAL METAL (ie : 'cast iron' ) in that cheap, small engine block . Baby boomer generation, of inventors/engine designers, is gone. Dead right mate! Had a '62 Plymouth Valiant (the old sloped-back version) when I was in high school and university in Canada, with the 3-speed column change. 225 c.i. - 145 HP stock. Had a new manifold made for a Weber 2-barrel carb. Then it would do over 50mph in second gear! It had very close to 50/50 front/rear weight distribution in a 4 door sedan - handled like a dream around corners, plenty of power. Absolutely COULD NOT kill it!! Had over 200,000 miles on it when I gave it to my brother, and he probably put another 100,000 on it. Used about 1/8 inch of oil on the diptick between changes every 4000 miles! Great car! Bought another later year one when I moved here to New Zealand 48 years ago!
@@allansbullet That is awesome!! I love hearing these slant six experiences! After 35 years, I never grow tired of them. I had 74 Valiant Scamp in the 90s. Super reliable. Never burned oil. Sold it to a truck driver about 20 years ago and I'm sure that it's still running. Slant Sixes are immortal... like a clock!! I am inspired to write a book now called "The Slant Six Chronicles" with stories like yours and at least a dozen others I know. One guy I knew bought a 72 Valiant in the 80s, sold it with 120k miles on it in the early 90s. As he was cleaning it out, he found a buried receipt under the passenger seat from 1979 for a work order on a new odometer from a local shop. Odometer reading on the paper said 76k as "mileage in". So his car was just over the 200k mark and had no idea until the day he let it go!!

My 2003 Silverado 5.3 is still going strong at 328,000 miles. Seems like when they add/improve engineering for better fuel mileage, etc. sometimes they screw things up.
Had a 2000 silverado with 540.000 miles diddnt burn oil and still powerfull,rust from the northeast and someone driving in 4 low blew the transmission a d transfer case,otherwise,would still be driveing it!!!!
ahh,, could only agree with you in 25 most 30%,,, owned 4 different range rovers since 2004 to 2021,,,,2 sports & 2 full size to be precise,,,I swear, I bet my head, arm and tong with eyes lol that I did not have any major problems with them but ONE,, the 2004 was made by BMW and it was nothing but disaster, constant overheating issues with engine and tranny or air suspension problems, 3 years with 50K already pile of garbage, basically every month I was having a problem lol... the other 3 were made during Ford era. Only little minor things, but never got stranded on the road or broken down,,, Glad I never gave up on RR after my first unfortunate run with 2004. But when I hear horror stories from Tesla customers RR looks like Toyota lol.
That's a shame on the 5.3. The previous ones would run forever. My 2003 has 240k miles on it, runs like new, uses no oil and still has adequate power to tow 6000lbs. I fully expect it to make it to 300k miles. Mine does not have 4cy/8cyl mode though. That seems to be the root cause for the lifter issues. That and poor maintenance.
@@ericpigg2689 yeah, I had that prblm myself, but as you said, they keep a-truck'n along. It's only noticeable at start up, but smooths out after a few min. A bottle of Lucas additive every few oil changes treats it pretty good 🙂💪

Shame on these car companies for making and selling junk in this day and age ! For the prices they charge, these cars and engines should be nearly perfect.
Most of those cars are usually leased so only out there for under 50K in the hands of the first owner. They might go through the "certified pre owned" program when turned in, given an extended warranty and then sold. Once these cars are over 10 years old, if not earlier, dealers won't touch them, they're left to the open auto repair market. Really after that, as a mechanic myself, most of us say "remember the "X" problem with those such and such cars? Damn glad those are gone!"
Great information and phenomenal content. The beautiful appearance of some if these luxury cars often sell themselves to the consumer who never really take in all the other aspects of the vehicle. Keep pushing out the knowledge sir...
Rule 1, avoid a turbo 4 banger in a big boxy SUV, such as 2.0L in Jeep Wrangler and 2.3 in new Ford Bronco. I would only go naturally aspirated V6 or V8.
That is true to a certain degree, l know people with turbo charged diesel Defenders that have had problems at fairly low mileage but they have been thrashed and not serviced regularly, my old Defender Td5 bought in 2007 never had any issues in 17 years of use and around 255,000 miles.
@@clooperman3745 Turbo diesels are fine, provided that they are driven properly. I have had 3 turbo diesel VW's and they have all run for between 250 and 300,000 miles with no engine problems. Needless to say, quality synthetic oil is a must. At high mileage, many people seem to skimp on oil quality and i is a huge mistake. Did your Td5 have the VW engine.?
@@wilsjane l believe it was Land Rover's own design, it wasn't a VW engine, it was their first use of a diesel engine in a Defender with electronic management l think.
Early Range Rovers, for the first 20 years or so, were essentially posh Land Rovers. Still simple, reliable, with a fantastic 3.5 ltr V8. The later 3.9 was problematic, and when emphasis on luxury took over things started going down hill. Ironic that when BMW bought them they got worse. The UK's fantastic reputation of seizing defeat from the jaws of victory.
That is because they overbored it to increase capacity rather than increase the stroke If you use a buick 300 crank in the 3.5 with ford 260 rods and pistons it gibes a 4.3 litre torque monster
Ex-Hyundai tech here. I can assure you they aren't even using the knock sensors to detect these noises. I haven't worked for them for a few years but when the recall was issued we'd have to take our scan tool (an Android tablet with an obd dongle) and drive the car to a quiet area, roll the windows down then hold the rpms at 2k while the mic IN THE TABLET took a recording and determined whether or not the engine was knocking. And then their fix for if it was "OK" was to PUT A DIFFERENT DIPSTICK IN IT. And I can assure you that tablet never heard a damn thing. The only thing to fail these engine is when they throw rods straight through the block. Fuck Hyundai/Kia.
I retired from Hyundai after about a year of replacing short blocks. The Android was on its way, but not arrived yet. The word we got was that there was a problem on the block production line that did not completely clean out all of the passsges. Either way, to this very day, I have never seen a manufacturer go do far and bend over so backward as to not just replace engines, but willingly reimburse customers who had to come out of pocket from independent shops. REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE. I still receive reimbursement and follow-up recall information for my old 2011 Sonata, even though I’ve never had an issue. Loved working for Hyundai. Toyota was pretty good too. Domestics, forget it.

October of 2019, our knock sensor went off when we were pulling a trailer that was bouncing, creating a banging sound on the hitch. Apparently, that kicked the knock sensor on and we ended up with a new engine block and knock sensor replacement as well as a new turbo. Hyundai was very good to us, loaned us a car and did everything with a smile and extended warranty on the factory engine. We were at about 74k when this happened and now we are given another 100k on our drive train warranty since this happened. 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0. So far, so good.
Good customer service. It always the same with Korean cars, if they do go wrong the dealers will always fix them without quibble, sometimes even if they're just out of warranty. With 7 years warranty at least it shows they have confidence in their product..
The 5.3l /6.2l are monsters and one of the toughest engines on the road. Lifter fixes are easy and cheap. The lifters go bad because of the AFM that shits down 4 cylinders for gas economy. Lifter goes bad, change em out in your driveway and get back to thrashing. Push rod tech ftw!
Wow, you really did your research. My buddy’s N63 2013 650iX Gran Coupe just blew up at 53k miles. $120k MSRP and he had to junk it. As for the GM 5.3L V8 there’s a service bulletin stating that if you find needle bearings in your oil pan while changing oil, it’s considered normal. Yes spit bearings are “normal.”
Really you tripping on the needle bearing bulletin and after over 25 years working on cars the only one I’ve found that spit needle bearings are the Ford diesels and the oil pump eats them and spits them out through the front cover :)
If you find needle bearings in your oil pan or oil change we should already be clattering and making all sorts of noises a little late so that bulletins got to be bullshit you need to post it
With the chevy/gmc 5.3L buy a afm Disabler, products like range technology makes one for around $200 and will keep the vehicle in v8 mode, the problem mainly comes from the vehicle constantly switching between v4 and v8
Calling all Toyota fanbois posting on here about how fantastic Toyota is. Toyota has just released the LC300 which has a hot V diesel V6 for some markets, including Australia. Here in Australia we have many areas where temperatures routinely hit 45c (113f ). This model will be used to tow maximum allowable loads (3500Kg) up and over some very long inclines in said temperature conditions. Am waiting for the inevitable problems these will have, and Toyoya Australia's denial of issues, just like they denied issues with D4d engine problems, D4D injector failures, massive DPF problems with vehicles fitted with 2.8 diesels, engines in LC200, Prado, Fortuna, and Hilux ingesting dust past useless airbox seals. A very long list of denials requiring class actions to partly address issues. There isn't a "golden" car company in existence, just sayin'.

Yeah 5.4 3V before 2009 afterwards they redesigned heads and spark plugs which was a big fix! My 2011 expedition EL currently has 228,000 miles original engine and transmission only thing done to it is tune up and regular oil changes. Most of them 300,000 and hear some over 400,000 original just need 5W-30 oil not the 5w-20 like Ford recommended but that’s what gives it the engine issues I hear
Shame about BMW engines these days, had a 325 Sport in 1989 with the 2.5 litre straight 6 and that is known as a superb, tough and smooth engine, also used in South African Defenders at 2.8 litres.
Add the Ram ECO-Diesel to that list. Numerous tone ring failures(engine stops running). They issued a "recall" but...no parts available for over a year now.
Back in 1962 my grandmother bought one of those Buick Skylarks brand new where GM experimented with aluminum V8 engines, where the cooling systems were inadequate and the engines would warp and not run after a short time. GM replaced the engine with a cast iron version, so even old engines had some serious problems. Post WWII Studebakers sure had some sturdy engines, where Studebaker thought that postwar gasoline was going to be higher quality and built their engines to run on 11 to 1 compression ratio gasoline. That had many forged parts and the engines would put out 1 hp pet cubic inch. The 1962 Studebaker Avanti with a factory Paxton Supercharger could go 168mph, significantly faster than a Corvette. Hudson also built extremely strong engines with their 308 cubic inch six with dual H power. There were some awesome old school technology engines at one time. Today's modern engines are so much more high tech in design, but sadly some have design flaws and weaknesses.
Are you talking about the Buick 300 V8? They still used aluminum heads in 1964 and had problems, especially if it was the high compression version, in 1965 went to cast iron heads, problem solved.

I hate to disabuse you but I have horror stories from the 60’s 70’s and 80’s about cars that wore out fast, broke all the time while you enjoyed 150 hp and 13 mpg. Drive any car from that vintage. You’ll only do it once.
Well.....that's why my daily driver is a very reliable and cool car...my 1966 Charger with a 300,000 mile 318 in it gets close to 20mpg in town, and is so cheap, ( all mechanical parts are available) quiet and comfortable, I see no reason to get a new car...until Mopar makes an electric car.....maybe soon. But I'll still keep it!

Got it to go 10.93 124....back in 82....still have that one too...just restored it for Nostalgia SS/EA. It was stored in my friends potato barn for over 20 years, boy, that was a big job, what a mess........she's now all fresh, motor, paint, etc..hopefully I'll be able to run it soon. Wow, GMC with such a generous 8,000 mile engine guarantee. Amazing. I have a '72 Ford with way over 300,000 miles with a Windsor V8, and my K series Acura has over 219,000 miles on it without being rebuilt and still has great compression and doesn't burn oil.
I can confirm about KIA. I own a 2013 Optima, and had engine #1 replaced (under warranty) at 130K miles. I now have 31K on engine #2. Here's hoping this engine is better than the first, because I'll have them replace #2 under warranty if they don't (thank goodness for their lifetime warranty extension to engine #2).
I have that 5.3 liter engine in my 2009 Suburban LTZ, and it has 170,000 miles on it, all I've ever done to it is change the oil and filters, never had a tune-up yet and still runs smooth and strong. I did have to replace one of the rear air shocks but that has nothing to do with the engine. Also had that 5.3 in a GMC Sierra pickup, never done anything to it except change filters/oil in 110,000 miles. Maybe the newer 5.3's are junk but I've never had a problem with the older ones........thank you very much!
I was issued a Tahoe with the 5.3 (the only reason I would ever drive a Chevy), It had 3 stages: on the way to the shop, in the shop, and just got out of the shop.

The problem is that buyers, automotive magazines and television programmes are attracted to power and acceleration. Back in the day when a two litre engine would have an output of only 100hp engines were much more reliable.
I have an '02 GMC Sierra with the 5.3 liter engine. It has 235,000 miles on it. The only engine repairs I have ever done on it was to replace the alternator and the water pump. Great truck! Bought it new.
My daughters 2015 Hyundai 2.0L launched the 2nd Piston shaft out the side of the block due to bad bearings. Tough to find a good used one, but found one that had been updated and crappy bearings replaced. One month later, In-Laws 2016 Hyundai 2.0L engine locked up hard because the bearings gave way.. Took about two months for Hyundai to replace. Over the moon engineering!
Yup, you are correct about the BMW 4.4 twin turbo... my wife had a 650 vert which had massive oil consumption between oil changes and BMW's answer was "Oh, it's just like that." Yeah, BS! She exchanged it for an m850 vert and the new engine no longer consumes oil.
Super important video! Unfortunately, I own 2 of those brands. a BMW and a Range Rover Sport - SC. However, my BMW is the 2016 535D (diesel) and my Rover is a 2009 4.2L SC. Honestly, other than the Air Suspension system and anything related to that... this has been the best vehicle I've ever owned. Almost 1000 miles off-road and nearly 180K total miles. It's still going strong!
You've got the 4.2L. Those are significantly more reliable than the 5.0L. Jaguar had the same timing chain issues on the original 4.0L AJ V8, fixed it for the 4.2L and then because Jaguar is gonna Jaguar, they didn't address it in the early 5.0L and it had timing chain guide issues again.
@@Epotheros That’s why JLR changed the spec of the oil to: ST JLR 03.5006 Castrol EDGE Professional E-C5 0W-20 If you use anything else you are asking for problems. And before you disagree it’s not only the auto industry we do the same in aviation. RR had to change the spec of the turbo oils used in some engines due to coking and subsequent engine failure? My 5Ltr XKR vert. is currently on 170k miles and the only thing that’s been changed is the plastic drive dog to the supercharger. I do carefully follow the service schedule. One thing I don’t agree with is the ZF sourced gearbox and it’s so called maintenance free sealed for life. I have had the oil changed twice.
Had a 2001 Suburban, absolutely loved it. With only 120K on the clock, it began running rough, throwing misfire codes with the check engine light. Bad lifter? Perhaps, more likely defective camshaft. The engine design requires removal of both cylinder heads to extract the cam. Sold it to someone who would be putting in a new engine.
I have to tell you this story. I bought a 2005 Ford f250 with the V10 engine and from the very first day I heard nothing but bad things about the V10. Well 307,800 miles and other then tune ups every 100,000 miles it has never been into the shop. 13 miles to the gallon with or without a load and it just keeps going. at 30,000 miles the transmission started to go out and the Ford dealer told me to bring the truck back in and they were going to install a new not rebuilt transmission in it. The mechanic came up to me and said he was going to fix a few things in the transmission that would make it go for ever and guess what I don't know what he did but the same transmission is in the truck today and it does not miss a beat. Love my Ford V10
Now this is the stuff we all need to know! If these cars were reviewed by a guy like Doug Demuro, he would tell you how awesome each one is because they have useless things like leather wrapped cup holders. Nice info on vehicles that many people don't know are junk. Awesome vid, man! 👍
At the end of the day the ONLY way to resolve the problem with these poor designed and engineered vehicles is not buy them. When Mercedes , BMW, Audi and Land Rover can no longer make a dime from selling vehicles because of their reputation of selling over priced junk they will do EVERYTHING possible to keep that from happening. So long as people keep foolishly handing their money over to them, knowing the poor quality reputation of these manufacturers they will keep getting junk in return. Imagine if for one or two years the sales from these manufacturers was next to nothing with constant customer reviews coming in it is due to poor quality...do you think they would get the picture and change their ways?
@@KennyboyGM I agree,but leasing and buying are not the same. I would have to imagine it is less profitable for the manufacturers. Not to mention having lots full of their used vehicles collecting dust because they are unwanted and now possible money pits is not a good look...as consumers who are more aware on the pitfalls of these cars are staying away. All it takes is improving the engineering to make these things more reliable, certainly not a big thing to ask for you`re $50k-$80k.
Some are listening and improving. Anyone with any actual mechanical knowledge has agreed, BMW has made massive improvements in the last 4 years. The B series engines have done away with all the shortcomings of prior N series engines and the 8 speed ZF transmission is widely accepted as super robust and reliable. Toyota quality tested both the B58 and B48 for over a year before signing off to use them in the Supra. It's funny Hyundai has such a god like reputation among internet trolls, but drive by any dealer and there are pallets of replaced Theta 2 engines stacked up. But you know, there's reality and then theres the internet world. 🙄

Maybe the problem with KIA/Hyndai reputation (in the US of A ) is that outside the USA mostly smaller, less powerful engines are used that are maybe more reliable than the US "zero to 60 in more than 3 seconds is crap" - world. As someone who more or less drive daily on the german "Autobahn" (you know Lightspeed, Fast&Furious, yeah) I have no problem with 10+ seconds to 60 as long as the car can handle 100+mph in a curve.
5.3 is a great engine! It’s the fault of the fuel management on 2007 and newer motors, pre 07 they are probably the most reliable small block v8 ever produced.
British automobiles are the worst. I knew a guy with 2 Jaguars . One he drove ,one he kept in his garage for spare parts and Range Rover SUVs I wouldn't use them for scrap metal . If you buy ANY British automobile better be your own mechanic and do ALL repairs yourself as that's the ONLYway to have them . The unltimat9 MONEY PUTS .
Yep....my 2014 550i ended up being garbage...overheated, ate oil by the bucket load, melted turbo coolant lines, etc. So I dumped it. N63tu but was still very problematic.
A sad state of affairs when GM makes an engine with a valve train that wouldn’t hold up within 10000 miles. My wood floor guy owns this model for his business, he had this problem
I tell you what I'm a car dealer at the auctions the dealers are fighting to the end paying top dollar for those 5.3 and 6.0 ,, there has to be a a very small percentage of them that had to lifter problems is my guess,, based on what the dealers are paying for those Tahoe suburbans and Silverados those things go through the roof so they really can't be all that bad , if I had to guess I would say maybe 1/10 of 1% which is really nothing you can excuse that as bad maintenance Walmart or changes and low quality oil and filters,,,. i m h o
I beat one of those range rover’s in a fiero with a 3800 supercharged motor it was a pretty easy race….I hope the range rover driver didn’t break his engine in that race
In normal circumstances I would never invest my money in those vehicles. Only Lexus and Toyota in my driveway and peace of my mind. I forgot the adresses of the repairmen and shops.
I've owned 4 Cadillac Eldorados. Over the years I've heard so much bad press about the Northstar engine, but I guess I've just been lucky because those engines have always kicked ass. I have an ETC now with a Northstar, and it has performed great.
@andrew rider: The earlier northstars had issues with head gasket leaks. Overheating exacerbated that problem. The bolts were stripping out of the aluminum blocks.
@andrew rider: Yes, every northstar I've owned has had an oil leak. I read that the early ones had trouble when the antifreeze got old, it had a chemical effect on the head bolts & aluminum block, subsequently the bolts eventually stripped loose. I actually like the performance of those engines though. They wind up very quickly. 😎👍
Engines/Cars have been made for over a Century .... Yet this Century of the Automobile is marred with catastrophic failures & Class Actions by ALL Manufacturers . It is hard to justify the CEO's salaries of Car Manufacturers when they seem so qualified to fail & trash their reputations ....
Put some blame on the government and clean air standards. I remember when you could step inside of an engine compartment of a v-8 powered car, and work on it.
You forgot the VAG /Audi 2.0 tsfi turbo. Piston Rings, Timing Chain, Turbo failure. And, at least, Mercedes AMG 6.3 Liter V8. The worst Engine you can by for money.
I had a friend who bought a used Range Rover. He had fun driving around in it for awhile, then the electrical systems and the air ride suspension went wonky. It spent the last 7 or so years of his life sitting in his yard as a lawn ornament. No, the car didn't kill him, old age and cigaraettes did that.
@7:30 That’s not what knock sensors do. “Knock” can refer to rod knock, but what these sensors do is detect vibrations in the engine that come from pre-detonation of fuel/air in the combustion chamber. Lots of things can cause this, usually it’s fuel related, some fuels combust at different heat points and speed, etc. knock sensors detect this and adjust ignition timing to compensate.
Thanks for pointing that out. He talks so fast I've got to listen to it again, but you might have misunderstood [his] point verses the reasoning the mfr is using the knock sensor for. I think that's his point. He's quoting the NHTSA recall info referring to the knock sensor...
You forgot the BMW n20 engine which were used in ALOT of vehicles. Timing chain guides would literally become brittle and fall apart causing catastrophic engine failure. Major class action lawsuit just recently in 2020, extended warranty and reimbursement for past expenses to owners.
With all the complaints I have read about GM's 3.6L V6 I fully expected it to be on this list. Also expected to hear about a certain BMW V8 product which has a rep for bearings going away earlier than one would expect.
The 3.6 was in EVERYTHING gm made for a while. its a pretty much bullet proof engine. certain models got a bad rap due to different cooling arangments, and airflow through the engine bay causing warping of the intake manifolds, and heads eating gaskets.
If you are going to buy a landrover/rangerover make sure you get the one with the heated rear glass. This is to keep your hands warm in winter whilst you are pushing it.

When I was working at a BMW dealership in the 90s, we had so many complaints of excessive oil consumption that BMW fixed the problem in the typical German way. They changed the acceptable oil usage from 1 pint in 1200 miles to 1 quart in 390 miles. Problem solved!
Kinda like the early LS engines - couldn't keep the oil up to them.

There isn't any problem that can not be easily solved by lowering the standards we all used to deem acceptable. Ask the Germans how they did things in the 1930's and 1940's with people they found to not meet their standards of excellence.
In the world of government regulation and cars built to a price point instead of a high standard, all the PR and marketing teams of any manufacturer need to do to increase the perception of excellence and "reliability" is reduce the warranty coverage, blame the owners for not performing basic maintenance even if the dealer takes care of all basic maintenance and has documented it all, and then finally declare, "Look, most people own their cars for only an "x" amount of time and mileage. And most of our vehicles are leased. During that time frame, our vehicles are excellent! It's not nickel and dimed cost cutting engineering! (Screw those second and third owners who couldn't afford to buy new and take the hit in depreciation!)"
Excellence is just a term the PR and marketing teams have used to sell their wares since day one. Thog's rock is a much better, durable, more luxurious rock than Thag's sandstone piece of slag. Thog even offers a limited warranty and free standard rock repairs for the first 3 hits. Excellence: For all the times you need to be hitting Thag in his sandstone head!
That V8 in the new style 740, BMW came out with a toolkit to replace the valve stem seals, my god what a chore! I love 1 Qt. in 390 miles, worse than a 60's Jag where the same amount of oil loss in 500 miles was acceptable!

Not sure what you mean about reputation. These manufacturers are known to make junky cars, especially Kia/Hyundai and some of the USDM brands. Euro usually has lots of electronics issues and Japan well is best for reliability (Mostly Toyota and Honda tho)
The only good thing about the Cadillac Northstar engine was you got to make a lot of new friends at the service garage.
Cadillac put me off from American cars forever but depending on the Northstar they could be great. So long as the oil rings were installed correctly. My old boss had one one for 200 k before he sold it.All he had done was alternator at160k. Another co worker had one he went around 170 k ,no major issues. So it could be a great reliable car but was a crap shoot.

Dead right mate! Had a '62 Plymouth Valiant (the old sloped-back version) when I was in high school and university in Canada, with the 3-speed column change. 225 c.i. - 145 HP stock. Had a new manifold made for a Weber 2-barrel carb. Then it would do over 50mph in second gear! It had very close to 50/50 front/rear weight distribution in a 4 door sedan - handled like a dream around corners, plenty of power. Absolutely COULD NOT kill it!! Had over 200,000 miles on it when I gave it to my brother, and he probably put another 100,000 on it. Used about 1/8 inch of oil on the diptick between changes every 4000 miles! Great car! Bought another later year one when I moved here to New Zealand 48 years ago!

I am inspired to write a book now called "The Slant Six Chronicles" with stories like yours and at least a dozen others I know. One guy I knew bought a 72 Valiant in the 80s, sold it with 120k miles on it in the early 90s. As he was cleaning it out, he found a buried receipt under the passenger seat from 1979 for a work order on a new odometer from a local shop. Odometer reading on the paper said 76k as "mileage in". So his car was just over the 200k mark and had no idea until the day he let it go!!

BMW inline 6cyl engines are very good.
My 2003 Silverado 5.3 is still going strong at 328,000 miles. Seems like when they add/improve engineering for better fuel mileage, etc. sometimes they screw things up.
Had a 2000 silverado with 540.000 miles diddnt burn oil and still powerfull,rust from the northeast and someone driving in 4 low blew the transmission a d transfer case,otherwise,would still be driveing it!!!!

Only little minor things, but never got stranded on the road or broken down,,,

That's a shame on the 5.3. The previous ones would run forever. My 2003 has 240k miles on it, runs like new, uses no oil and still has adequate power to tow 6000lbs. I fully expect it to make it to 300k miles. Mine does not have 4cy/8cyl mode though. That seems to be the root cause for the lifter issues. That and poor maintenance.
I have a 2006 GMC Envoy with the Denali package and 5.3 with 160K with not a single problem.

Most of those cars are usually leased so only out there for under 50K in the hands of the first owner. They might go through the "certified pre owned" program when turned in, given an extended warranty and then sold. Once these cars are over 10 years old, if not earlier, dealers won't touch them, they're left to the open auto repair market. Really after that, as a mechanic myself, most of us say "remember the "X" problem with those such and such cars? Damn glad those are gone!"

Rule 1, avoid a turbo 4 banger in a big boxy SUV, such as 2.0L in Jeep Wrangler and 2.3 in new Ford Bronco. I would only go naturally aspirated V6 or V8.

That is true to a certain degree, l know people with turbo charged diesel Defenders that have had problems at fairly low mileage but they have been thrashed and not serviced regularly, my old Defender Td5 bought in 2007 never had any issues in 17 years of use and around 255,000 miles.
@@clooperman3745 Turbo diesels are fine, provided that they are driven properly. I have had 3 turbo diesel VW's and they have all run for between 250 and 300,000 miles with no engine problems. Needless to say, quality synthetic oil is a must. At high mileage, many people seem to skimp on oil quality and i is a huge mistake.

@@wilsjane l believe it was Land Rover's own design, it wasn't a VW engine, it was their first use of a diesel engine in a Defender with electronic management l think.
Early Range Rovers, for the first 20 years or so, were essentially posh Land Rovers. Still simple, reliable, with a fantastic 3.5 ltr V8. The later 3.9 was problematic, and when emphasis on luxury took over things started going down hill. Ironic that when BMW bought them they got worse.

Ex-Hyundai tech here. I can assure you they aren't even using the knock sensors to detect these noises. I haven't worked for them for a few years but when the recall was issued we'd have to take our scan tool (an Android tablet with an obd dongle) and drive the car to a quiet area, roll the windows down then hold the rpms at 2k while the mic IN THE TABLET took a recording and determined whether or not the engine was knocking. And then their fix for if it was "OK" was to PUT A DIFFERENT DIPSTICK IN IT. And I can assure you that tablet never heard a damn thing. The only thing to fail these engine is when they throw rods straight through the block. Fuck Hyundai/Kia.

I retired from Hyundai after about a year of replacing short blocks. The Android was on its way, but not arrived yet. The word we got was that there was a problem on the block production line that did not completely clean out all of the passsges. Either way, to this very day, I have never seen a manufacturer go do far and bend over so backward as to not just replace engines, but willingly reimburse customers who had to come out of pocket from independent shops. REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE. I still receive reimbursement and follow-up recall information for my old 2011 Sonata, even though I’ve never had an issue. Loved working for Hyundai. Toyota was pretty good too. Domestics, forget it.

I put new hydraulics from an aftermarket company in my 55 year old AMC V8, work like magic.
October of 2019, our knock sensor went off when we were pulling a trailer that was bouncing, creating a banging sound on the hitch. Apparently, that kicked the knock sensor on and we ended up with a new engine block and knock sensor replacement as well as a new turbo. Hyundai was very good to us, loaned us a car and did everything with a smile and extended warranty on the factory engine. We were at about 74k when this happened and now we are given another 100k on our drive train warranty since this happened. 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0. So far, so good.
Good customer service. It always the same with Korean cars, if they do go wrong the dealers will always fix them without quibble, sometimes even if they're just out of warranty. With 7 years warranty at least it shows they have confidence in their product..
The 5.3l /6.2l are monsters and one of the toughest engines on the road. Lifter fixes are easy and cheap. The lifters go bad because of the AFM that shits down 4 cylinders for gas economy. Lifter goes bad, change em out in your driveway and get back to thrashing. Push rod tech ftw!
Wow, you really did your research. My buddy’s N63 2013 650iX Gran Coupe just blew up at 53k miles. $120k MSRP and he had to junk it. As for the GM 5.3L V8 there’s a service bulletin stating that if you find needle bearings in your oil pan while changing oil, it’s considered normal. Yes spit bearings are “normal.”
Really you tripping on the needle bearing bulletin and after over 25 years working on cars the only one I’ve found that spit needle bearings are the Ford diesels and the oil pump eats them and spits them out through the front cover :)

Just traded my 2015 Santa Fe 2.0 Turbo with 134,000 miles. I never had 1 min of trouble out of it, i only ran Mobile 1 oil and ran it pretty hard.
With the chevy/gmc 5.3L buy a afm Disabler, products like range technology makes one for around $200 and will keep the vehicle in v8 mode, the problem mainly comes from the vehicle constantly switching between v4 and v8

Calling all Toyota fanbois posting on here about how fantastic Toyota is. Toyota has just released the LC300 which has a hot V diesel V6 for some markets, including Australia. Here in Australia we have many areas where temperatures routinely hit 45c (113f ). This model will be used to tow maximum allowable loads (3500Kg) up and over some very long inclines in said temperature conditions. Am waiting for the inevitable problems these will have, and Toyoya Australia's denial of issues, just like they denied issues with D4d engine problems, D4D injector failures, massive DPF problems with vehicles fitted with 2.8 diesels, engines in LC200, Prado, Fortuna, and Hilux ingesting dust past useless airbox seals. A very long list of denials requiring class actions to partly address issues. There isn't a "golden" car company in existence, just sayin'.

Out of a few million Chevy 5.3 engines, almost exclusively the one's that fail have lack of service.
The ones I think of off the top of my head are the Ford 5.4 3V Triton V8, GM 3.6 L V6, and Chrysler 2.7 L V6
Yeah 5.4 3V before 2009 afterwards they redesigned heads and spark plugs which was a big fix! My 2011 expedition EL currently has 228,000 miles original engine and transmission only thing done to it is tune up and regular oil changes. Most of them 300,000 and hear some over 400,000 original just need 5W-30 oil not the 5w-20 like Ford recommended but that’s what gives it the engine issues I hear
Shame about BMW engines these days, had a 325 Sport in 1989 with the 2.5 litre straight 6 and that is known as a superb, tough and smooth engine, also used in South African Defenders at 2.8 litres.

Back in 1962 my grandmother bought one of those Buick Skylarks brand new where GM experimented with aluminum V8 engines, where the cooling systems were inadequate and the engines would warp and not run after a short time. GM replaced the engine with a cast iron version, so even old engines had some serious problems. Post WWII Studebakers sure had some sturdy engines, where Studebaker thought that postwar gasoline was going to be higher quality and built their engines to run on 11 to 1 compression ratio gasoline. That had many forged parts and the engines would put out 1 hp pet cubic inch. The 1962 Studebaker Avanti with a factory Paxton Supercharger could go 168mph, significantly faster than a Corvette. Hudson also built extremely strong engines with their 308 cubic inch six with dual H power. There were some awesome old school technology engines at one time. Today's modern engines are so much more high tech in design, but sadly some have design flaws and weaknesses.
Are you talking about the Buick 300 V8? They still used aluminum heads in 1964 and had problems, especially if it was the high compression version, in 1965 went to cast iron heads, problem solved.

Well.....that's why my daily driver is a very reliable and cool car...my 1966 Charger with a 300,000 mile 318 in it gets close to 20mpg in town, and is so cheap, ( all mechanical parts are available) quiet and comfortable, I see no reason to get a new car...until Mopar makes an electric car.....maybe soon. But I'll still keep it!

Got it to go 10.93 124....back in 82....still have that one too...just restored it for Nostalgia SS/EA. It was stored in my friends potato barn for over 20 years, boy, that was a big job, what a mess........she's now all fresh, motor, paint, etc..hopefully I'll be able to run it soon.

Wow, GMC with such a generous 8,000 mile engine guarantee. Amazing. I have a '72 Ford with way over 300,000 miles with a Windsor V8, and my K series Acura has over 219,000 miles on it without being rebuilt and still has great compression and doesn't burn oil.

I can confirm about KIA. I own a 2013 Optima, and had engine #1 replaced (under warranty) at 130K miles. I now have 31K on engine #2. Here's hoping this engine is better than the first, because I'll have them replace #2 under warranty if they don't (thank goodness for their lifetime warranty extension to engine #2).

I have that 5.3 liter engine in my 2009 Suburban LTZ, and it has 170,000 miles on it, all I've ever done to it is change the oil and filters, never had a tune-up yet and still runs smooth and strong. I did have to replace one of the rear air shocks but that has nothing to do with the engine. Also had that 5.3 in a GMC Sierra pickup, never done anything to it except change filters/oil in 110,000 miles. Maybe the newer 5.3's are junk but I've never had a problem with the older ones........thank you very much!
Yeah I had 2 in that year range and sold them both ,that the best engine I have a couple friends have gone over 300000 and counting
5.3’s we’re good until about 07 or 08 when they put that active fuel management on them.
I was issued a Tahoe with the 5.3 (the only reason I would ever drive a Chevy), It had 3 stages: on the way to the shop, in the shop, and just got out of the shop.

The problem is that buyers, automotive magazines and television programmes are attracted to power and acceleration. Back in the day when a two litre engine would have an output of only 100hp engines were much more reliable.
On the chevy and the GMC its the ones with the 4/8 set up that have the problem with the lifters

I have an '02 GMC Sierra with the 5.3 liter engine. It has 235,000 miles on it. The only engine repairs I have ever done on it was to replace the alternator and the water pump. Great truck! Bought it new.

My daughters 2015 Hyundai 2.0L launched the 2nd Piston shaft out the side of the block due to bad bearings. Tough to find a good used one, but found one that had been updated and crappy bearings replaced. One month later, In-Laws 2016 Hyundai 2.0L engine locked up hard because the bearings gave way.. Took about two months for Hyundai to replace. Over the moon engineering!

Yup, you are correct about the BMW 4.4 twin turbo... my wife had a 650 vert which had massive oil consumption between oil changes and BMW's answer was "Oh, it's just like that." Yeah, BS! She exchanged it for an m850 vert and the new engine no longer consumes oil.

Super important video! Unfortunately, I own 2 of those brands. a BMW and a Range Rover Sport - SC. However, my BMW is the 2016 535D (diesel) and my Rover is a 2009 4.2L SC. Honestly, other than the Air Suspension system and anything related to that... this has been the best vehicle I've ever owned. Almost 1000 miles off-road and nearly 180K total miles. It's still going strong!

You've got the 4.2L. Those are significantly more reliable than the 5.0L. Jaguar had the same timing chain issues on the original 4.0L AJ V8, fixed it for the 4.2L and then because Jaguar is gonna Jaguar, they didn't address it in the early 5.0L and it had timing chain guide issues again.

And before you disagree it’s not only the auto industry we do the same in aviation. RR had to change the spec of the turbo oils used in some engines due to coking and subsequent engine failure?
My 5Ltr XKR vert. is currently on 170k miles and the only thing that’s been changed is the plastic drive dog to the supercharger. I do carefully follow the service schedule.
One thing I don’t agree with is the ZF sourced gearbox and it’s so called maintenance free sealed for life. I have had the oil changed twice.

I've owned 5 German cars (VW, Audi, Mercedes, 2 BMWs). I can't badmouth them as, besides some minor issues, they were nice.
Every German vehicle isn’t bad, bought my Touareg brand new in 2015 (3.6L V6), still rides and drives like new (96k).
Had a 2001 Suburban, absolutely loved it.
With only 120K on the clock, it began running rough, throwing misfire codes with the check engine light. Bad lifter? Perhaps, more likely defective camshaft. The engine design requires removal of both cylinder heads to extract the cam. Sold it to someone who would be putting in a new engine.
I have to tell you this story. I bought a 2005 Ford f250 with the V10 engine and from the very first day I heard nothing but bad things about the V10. Well 307,800 miles and other then tune ups every 100,000 miles it has never been into the shop. 13 miles to the gallon with or without a load and it just keeps going. at 30,000 miles the transmission started to go out and the Ford dealer told me to bring the truck back in and they were going to install a new not rebuilt transmission in it. The mechanic came up to me and said he was going to fix a few things in the transmission that would make it go for ever and guess what I don't know what he did but the same transmission is in the truck today and it does not miss a beat. Love my Ford V10
Seen rainman ray repairs take out a bent pushrod after 17000 miles on a GMC truck. Totally unacceptable for a modern vehicle

At the end of the day the ONLY way to resolve the problem with these poor designed and engineered vehicles is not buy them. When Mercedes , BMW, Audi and Land Rover can no longer make a dime from selling vehicles because of their reputation of selling over priced junk they will do EVERYTHING possible to keep that from happening. So long as people keep foolishly handing their money over to them, knowing the poor quality reputation of these manufacturers they will keep getting junk in return. Imagine if for one or two years the sales from these manufacturers was next to nothing with constant customer reviews coming in it is due to poor quality...do you think they would get the picture and change their ways?

Not to mention having lots full of their used vehicles collecting dust because they are unwanted and now possible money pits is not a good look...as consumers who are more aware on the pitfalls of these cars are staying away. All it takes is improving the engineering to make these things more reliable, certainly not a big thing to ask for you`re $50k-$80k.
Some are listening and improving. Anyone with any actual mechanical knowledge has agreed, BMW has made massive improvements in the last 4 years. The B series engines have done away with all the shortcomings of prior N series engines and the 8 speed ZF transmission is widely accepted as super robust and reliable. Toyota quality tested both the B58 and B48 for over a year before signing off to use them in the Supra. It's funny Hyundai has such a god like reputation among internet trolls, but drive by any dealer and there are pallets of replaced Theta 2 engines stacked up. But you know, there's reality and then theres the internet world. 🙄
@@mr.c3939 Internet world is world - Reality is USA. Maybe the problem with KIA/Hyndai reputation (in the US of A ) is that outside the USA mostly smaller, less powerful engines are used that are maybe more reliable than the US "zero to 60 in more than 3 seconds is crap" - world.
As someone who more or less drive daily on the german "Autobahn" (you know Lightspeed, Fast&Furious, yeah) I have no problem with 10+ seconds to 60 as long as the car can handle 100+mph in a curve.

5.3 is a great engine! It’s the fault of the fuel management on 2007 and newer motors, pre 07 they are probably the most reliable small block v8 ever produced.

British automobiles are the worst. I knew a guy with 2 Jaguars . One he drove ,one he kept in his garage for spare parts and Range Rover SUVs I wouldn't use them for scrap metal . If you buy ANY British automobile better be your own mechanic and do ALL repairs yourself as that's the ONLYway to have them . The unltimat9 MONEY PUTS .

Yep....my 2014 550i ended up being garbage...overheated, ate oil by the bucket load, melted turbo coolant lines, etc. So I dumped it. N63tu but was still very problematic.
A sad state of affairs when GM makes an engine with a valve train that wouldn’t hold up within 10000 miles. My wood floor guy owns this model for his business, he had this problem
I tell you what I'm a car dealer at the auctions the dealers are fighting to the end paying top dollar for those 5.3 and 6.0 ,, there has to be a a very small percentage of them that had to lifter problems is my guess,, based on what the dealers are paying for those Tahoe suburbans and Silverados those things go through the roof so they really can't be all that bad , if I had to guess I would say maybe 1/10 of 1% which is really nothing you can excuse that as bad maintenance Walmart or changes and low quality oil and filters,,,. i m h o
I beat one of those range rover’s in a fiero with a 3800 supercharged motor it was a pretty easy race….I hope the range rover driver didn’t break his engine in that race
In normal circumstances I would never invest my money in those vehicles. Only Lexus and Toyota in my driveway and peace of my mind. I forgot the adresses of the repairmen and shops.

I've owned 4 Cadillac Eldorados. Over the years I've heard so much bad press about the Northstar engine, but I guess I've just been lucky because those engines have always kicked ass. I have an ETC now with a Northstar, and it has performed great.

The earlier northstars had issues with head gasket leaks. Overheating exacerbated that problem. The bolts were stripping out of the aluminum blocks.

Yes, every northstar I've owned has had an oil leak. I read that the early ones had trouble when the antifreeze got old, it had a chemical effect on the head bolts & aluminum block, subsequently the bolts eventually stripped loose. I actually like the performance of those engines though. They wind up very quickly. 😎👍
Engines/Cars have been made for over a Century .... Yet this Century of the Automobile is marred with catastrophic failures & Class Actions by ALL Manufacturers . It is hard to justify the CEO's salaries of Car Manufacturers when they seem so qualified to fail & trash their reputations ....

You forgot the VAG /Audi 2.0 tsfi turbo. Piston Rings, Timing Chain, Turbo failure. And, at least, Mercedes AMG 6.3 Liter V8. The worst Engine you can by for money.

I had a friend who bought a used Range Rover. He had fun driving around in it for awhile, then the electrical systems and the air ride suspension went wonky. It spent the last 7 or so years of his life sitting in his yard as a lawn ornament. No, the car didn't kill him, old age and cigaraettes did that.
Had a customer with a land rover, he laughed as he told me about having a bank account with $10K set aside just for repairs on it!

@7:30 That’s not what knock sensors do. “Knock” can refer to rod knock, but what these sensors do is detect vibrations in the engine that come from pre-detonation of fuel/air in the combustion chamber. Lots of things can cause this, usually it’s fuel related, some fuels combust at different heat points and speed, etc. knock sensors detect this and adjust ignition timing to compensate.

You forgot the BMW n20 engine which were used in ALOT of vehicles. Timing chain guides would literally become brittle and fall apart causing catastrophic engine failure. Major class action lawsuit just recently in 2020, extended warranty and reimbursement for past expenses to owners.

With all the complaints I have read about GM's 3.6L V6 I fully expected it to be on this list. Also expected to hear about a certain BMW V8 product which has a rep for bearings going away earlier than one would expect.
My 3.6 Saturn Aura has 265k and going strong. Timing chain done at 180k and will change it again at 375k or so.
The 3.6 was in EVERYTHING gm made for a while. its a pretty much bullet proof engine. certain models got a bad rap due to different cooling arangments, and airflow through the engine bay causing warping of the intake manifolds, and heads eating gaskets.
