Thank you! This video helped me out SOOOOOO much!!! I've been getting confused on how to OC with this mobo. Just tried my first OC now, years after your upload.
Can't thank you enough for this, got a nice stable overclock to 4.3, I backed the voltage off from 1.25 to 1.2 as it was a touch hot on my system but running very stable now! Thankyou!!!
Vaibhav Negi make sure you disable turbo boost....it's under the frequency settings then scroll down to advanced, open that and you'll see the turbo boost, it should be on auto just disable it
Hello der8auer, Can I use your Haswell OC-Frame with a delidded 4770K and is it compatible with AIO cooling like Corsair H115i? And most importantly, is it worth it when using AIO cooling or is this for LN sessions only? Thanks.
From much reading and testing and watching videos like this it even says this in some BIOS "the uncore frequency NB should be equal or at most be 100mhz less", otheriwse you will get juttering lag spikes in games like Fortnite, many of the overclocks you see are 4.5ghz with a uncore probably not set correctly so temps are lower, IMO the 4th gen I5 max out around 3.9 - 4.3 for daily use with with both clocks set equal and good air cooling but maybe you could get more with water. The max safe temp 72c on intel site, so say 73C anything over 75c is some risk, i've got my 4670k to 4.0ghz i delidded cpu at 100% use on a cool/warm day i'm getting 68-69c max temp, so still to hot for summer when the room temp goes up. so max 3.8 or maybe 3.9 after fine tuning in volts. in winter maybe better but i'd rather have it max safe speed all year. this is still a £60 cpu in 2020 so not the end of the world if you brick it but annoying.
Hello, I really like your tutorial, I only have one question about it. Is it possible to overclock the processor (I have the same motherboard and i7 4790k processor) so that the idle processor has a reduced clock speed, and only in games, or during rendering, to what processor was it overclocked (in my case 4.7 GHz)? best regards
I am in a situation where I have no display during the bios setup. Just to be sure, how exactly do you navigate between menus and set things correctly?
i followed your video and find it very helpful... i have a i7 4790k @ 4.6ghz with Vcore 1.254 the temp im getting is 86 degrees after 8 hours of aida64... is this fine or should i increase my Vcore or lower my multiplier?? Please help...

thank u 4 this video ...... and i need ur help ... i got 2x8 gb ram and thy run at 2400mhz .... but 2day i bought a new kit as the same old 1 ..... so i have 32 gb of ram and the same MHZ ....but they all runs at 1333mhz .... so my question is ( how to make all RAM run at 2400mhz ? ) .... FUI my reg is : MB ( GIGABYTE G1.Sniper Z97 LGA 1150 ) .....CPU ( i7-4770K, 3.5 GHZ, 8MB Cache ) ... RAM memory ( 2 kit Kingston Hyper X 16GB DDR3-2400 mhz ) ..... cpu cooler ( corsair H100i GTX ) .... VC ( gtx 980ti ) .... and my OS is windows 10 64bit
Followed everything, however when I key in a certain multiplier it doesn't follow the Core Voltage that I want to use. In example, I want to run 4.3gHz at 1.000 Volts and I set it up that way when I load up Windows it goes to 1.112V or something higher. The issue is I want it to follow my Voltage so my cooler can handle it. Just a Hyper 212.
I think what's holding me back is the poor TIM used on this generation, also I think I'm lucky with the Silicon Lottery. I don't need high voltages. BTW I prefer the older/classic bios vs the new UEFI. Got my hands on a review sample for a Noctua NH - D15S Here's what I got. 4.2gHz 1.020Vcore Average Idle: 37 °C | Average Load: 68 °C 4.5gHz 1.120Vcore Average Idle: 38 °C | Average Load: 75 °C Due note that the results are done in a tropical climate with no Air Conditioning so results are really warm. Average Room Temperature is around 35 °C, test was done during the hottest time of the day.
hi @der8auer This video of yours is great. I tried it on my setup i5 4690k with GIGABYTE z97x GAMING 5 and 8gb(4gbx2) KINGSTON DDR3 1333MHZ using AIO liquid cooling I set my multiplier to 41 x 100 = 4.1GHZ with manual VCORE 1.120v. My MAX temp went to 85 during 10 minutes prime 95 test with no error. I stopped it because I worried of the temp is too high. I just stop at this setup but want to go up until 4.3GHZ, and wanted to reduce the temp not reaching 80. Can you give me tip on how to attain 4.3GHZ with below 80 temp. Also, How can I OC my KINGSTON 1333 MHZ, I dont see any xmp profile in my mobo BIOS. Thanks in advance
+christian D Hey! Your memory modules don't have XMP. You can try to increase the DRAM Voltage to 1,65 Volt and set the memory clock to 1600 MHz and see if it works. Maybe even 1866 MHz. Temperatures seem very high for AIO. What thermal paste do you use? Maybe adjust fan speed to run higher?
+der8auer thanks for the reply. you mean to say, i can still adjust the MHZ of my RAM from STOCK1333 to 1600MHZ? but just add the voltage of RAM from 1.5 to 1.65? In regards with my temp using AIO, i used the paste inclusive in the AIO it self. How can I adjust my FAN speed? Thanks in advance
+der8auer hello sir, I tried to lower my VCORE from 1.25 which you shown in video to 1.100 and up the MULTIPLIER to 42 making it 4.2ghz. I am a bit worried with the temp which hits 85. Is it still ok?
+twan duvigneau You can probably increase a lot of your CPU is running at those temps and stable. The reason people get water cooling is so they can clock their CPU's much higher than the air cooled method. I personally started with the 212 evo, it's an amazing beginners CPU cooler and for a mild clock it works very well. Just be careful when over clocking because you can lower the life span of your processor if you clock it too high and even damage it. He should have warned people in the beginning of the video that his viewers should be aware of what can happen if they mess around too much with the voltages and speeds. I did enjoy the video, though.
Why do you put Memory Clock to 2400 MHz if you're stock is 1600 MHz? At the end you say "Check if it is stable, if not increase the voltage". What do you mean with "it" ? Do you mean stable temperatures? (Thank you! I'm new(b) to OC'ing :p)
+Matthijs vd Poel 1600 MHz is the stock without loading XMP :) If you have XMP memory (my kit was 2400 MHz) and don't activate it, it will run at 1600. With "it" I meant the CPU. If you overclock too high, the system will become unstable. So you have to test for stability/instability :)
+kttiger666 Try 4.4 GHz OC please. 4790K can go up to 4.4 GHz with Turbo multi. So depending on the current TDP it could be that your CPU was running 4.4 in unigine. Maybe try to compare with Cinebench (Multithreaded performance)
Did not work for me with my i5 4670K @G1.Sniper Z97 cooled by Prolimatech Megahalems rev. B. Also: in this video and your linked guides you totally run contra to what you say in your guide posted on PC Games Hardware forum - that one could keep the power saving options [Enabled] - why? I'm not mocking this video, i just think that 7 minutes are not enough to skip the 'trial and error' part and maybe get a 1 hour prime stable setup - i just started overclocking my cpu again after i sent my air cooled Q9400@4GHz into retirement. Maybe you should consider showing all the important bios settings instead of only the main settings? Consider this constructive critics, i love good video tutorials if i can avoid reading tons of text and pdf documents ;)
+der8auer I already did that - optimized default settings loaded, SATA is set to AHCI, boot loading order is set up and i keep getting INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE BSOD...
thats idle temp, highend haswells are 4 or near 4 by default, you should aim at least 4.5 imo i personally think haswells are best like very polished and efficient, so oc it to the max
Hello, your guide helped me alot but i have few problems. I have i5 4690k with gigabyte z97x-SLI with Cooler Master Seidon 120V water cooling and my temperatures always hit above 90*C. I set my OC on 4.1 GHz with 1.116V, any thoughts on this ?
+iress22 sounds pretty high indeed. Did you check the cooler-mounting and thermal paste? Maybe you have to consider to delid the CPU and swap the thermal paste.
+iress22 Try Prime 95 v26.6 it is the best Prime95 for Devil's Canyon CPU's (4690K and 4790K). Makes the CPU run cooler but does the job for proper stability test. You may want to re-mount the water block to the CPU, that seems a bit high for only 1.16v.

Have the exact same motherboard and CPU, but when i save and exit, i cant even turn on my pc?
you need a cooler heatsink and fan. prob using stock fans.
If it went to 91 in an hour should I scale back down the over clock or increase core voltage?
Or decrease it?
how do you set your memory on this Motherboard.

RAM memory ( 2 kit Kingston Hyper X 16GB DDR3-2400 mhz ) ..... cpu cooler ( corsair H100i GTX ) .... VC ( gtx 980ti ) .... and my OS is windows 10 64bit
I got stable 4.4 and temperature i get on 4 cores is like 64-67 max when i testing can i go more then/ how more this i5 4690k can handle max ?
Unclle Crappy4K What's the voltage?
Nice one my PC start to be a little bit old
Followed everything, however when I key in a certain multiplier it doesn't follow the Core Voltage that I want to use.
In example, I want to run 4.3gHz at 1.000 Volts and I set it up that way when I load up Windows it goes to 1.112V or something higher.
The issue is I want it to follow my Voltage so my cooler can handle it. Just a Hyper 212.
It wont be stable at 1v, at least 1.115v. Tried the other bios and take out the auto option from cpu voltage
I think what's holding me back is the poor TIM used on this generation, also I think I'm lucky with the Silicon Lottery. I don't need high voltages.
BTW I prefer the older/classic bios vs the new UEFI.
Got my hands on a review sample for a Noctua NH - D15S
Here's what I got.
4.2gHz 1.020Vcore
Average Idle: 37 °C | Average Load: 68 °C
4.5gHz 1.120Vcore
Average Idle: 38 °C | Average Load: 75 °C
Due note that the results are done in a tropical climate with no Air Conditioning so results are really warm.
Average Room Temperature is around 35 °C, test was done during the hottest time of the day.
How do you change from auto to manual
+Dr.Epiforce Games use + and - on your keyboard :)
hi @der8auer
This video of yours is great.
I overclock my i5 to 4ghz. 1.200v. Is it good?
Wich one are u using? U can set to 1v to run at 4ghz. if doesnt go well increase 0.05v untill work
Hi. Is 2600k possible?
yes
Just a tip, i5 4690k at 4.3ghz runs really good at 1.125v, dont need to increase above 1.130v
Vielen Dank nochmal ;)
When I go to change the xmp the option to do it is not even there..
Theres only system memory multiplier and memory frequency. Help please
Is it possible to put in the multiplier manually, and what should I put it on in that case?
+Klump Bauer some memory modules don't have XMP :) In that case just skip this step and move on.
der8auer ok, thanks!
would my cooler master hyper 212 evo be enough to stay under 90???
+Ray-Tube i also have a i5 4690k
+Ray-Tube Should be fine for 4.3 GHz yes :)
+der8auer I just had the time to overclock, running prime95 right now. temps are around 65 c° with the settings you used :)
+der8auer same cooler to, but i'm using another mobo: gigabyte gaming 3
+twan duvigneau You can probably increase a lot of your CPU is running at those temps and stable. The reason people get water cooling is so they can clock their CPU's much higher than the air cooled method. I personally started with the 212 evo, it's an amazing beginners CPU cooler and for a mild clock it works very well. Just be careful when over clocking because you can lower the life span of your processor if you clock it too high and even damage it. He should have warned people in the beginning of the video that his viewers should be aware of what can happen if they mess around too much with the voltages and speeds. I did enjoy the video, though.
Please I knows its old but how u disable secure boot
well disable it
I7-4790k at 4.5ghz and max temp was 89degrees, is that ok?
+Low Top sounds good :)
+der8auer if we want to put our i7 4790k at 4,5ghz, we have to use the same voltage and parameters that we can see in that video?
no its not, i did play at 84-86c with lga775 but i think cpus with boosts should run under 80c for optimal perf
im not sure since ive never had k series intel, so check yourself
I have the same mobo and cpu ,but it wont let me change CPU Base Clock to manual.
Did you figure it out?
@@Pr3mierez Hi yes to change values you use the + and minus keys on keyboard.
i got my i5-4690K to 4.8GHz on Z97X- gaming 3 MOBO 1.325v
Great, my I7 4790k can't do more than 4.7GHz but I am also really happy about it because it needs just 1.264v and stays cool :)
still working?
Why do you put Memory Clock to 2400 MHz if you're stock is 1600 MHz?
At the end you say "Check if it is stable, if not increase the voltage". What do you mean with "it" ? Do you mean stable temperatures?
(Thank you! I'm new(b) to OC'ing :p)
+Matthijs vd Poel 1600 MHz is the stock without loading XMP :) If you have XMP memory (my kit was 2400 MHz) and don't activate it, it will run at 1600. With "it" I meant the CPU. If you overclock too high, the system will become unstable. So you have to test for stability/instability :)
i dont have XMP setting in the bios, can i still OC? my ram is running at 1600
i follow all steps, but my performance go down (5-10% benchmark test) , i have a i7 4790k and i put it to 4,3gh like u (4,0ghz stock)
my ram in running 1866mhz and 1,5v, my gpu is 970 g1 :S
+WalkandPeace i didn´t see the temp. i will check. Ty man
+kttiger666 which benchmark exactly?
+der8auer ungine valley, i get 132 fps with stock value, and 126 fps with 4,3ghz oc
+novocainDaimon These videos are for those who don't want to read text and don't want to do trial and error :)
well, thats why i watched it - currently trying to fix the mess that tutorial left for me (cant boot my windows even at stock settings)... X_x
+novocainDaimon Just load optimized defaults :) Also make sure the AHCI settings are correct
+der8auer I already did that - optimized default settings loaded, SATA is set to AHCI, boot loading order is set up and i keep getting INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE BSOD...
😂
When Asrock Skylake guide? :(
+Domino0441 working on it :) Hopefully tomorrow. Well at least a Skylake tutorial. Only have ASUS Boards here so far. Still waiting for the others.
+der8auer Ok, thanks! Your guides are veeery useful!
Hi i have problem bcs dont have xmp
Should i set memory multiplaier to 16 ? Bcs my ram frequency is 1600hz
Mine crash with those settings
Is 40 cpu temperature (in bios) safe enough to overlock it from 3.5 to 3.8 or 4ghz ? And what voltage would you set for 4ghz, like 1.2v ? Thanks.
thats idle temp, highend haswells are 4 or near 4 by default, you should aim at least 4.5 imo
i personally think haswells are best like very polished and efficient, so oc it to the max
My CPU temp is stable at 75°C is that a safe temp to be at? Thanks for this btw.
In general, for most PC parts, try not to go over 84-90 C.
yeah i would keep things under 80c to make sure cores run optimally wo throttles, but not sure every board are different
i have i7 4770k
m1 sniper m5
and on bootup my pc crashed
+Osher Kalifa Try a lower CPU multiplier first and see if it works. Set CPU Clock Ratio to 41 or 42
Hi, for some reason i cant change the voltages you know why?
I7 4690k? LoL?
You mean I5?
+tom hill Btw, Not bashing video. Good Vid, simple mistake, and might wanna fix, can mislead some people hehe.
Yep works ok, but my PC didn't change. It's still slow!
Hello, it doesn’t let me to change some settings like cpu base clock, it’s on auto and can’t change it... any idea ?
Please make sure your motherboard supports overclocking, it requires a Z chipset and K cpu.
