How Horsepower Is Measured In Cars

- Torque and horsepower are both ways of understanding force where torque describes the capacity of a force to twist an object and horsepower describes that capacity over time. We'll examine how horsepower improves a car's ability to perform "work," and how an engineer uses a dynamometer to measure horsepower and torque curves.

How Horsepower is Measured In Cars
suddenly business insider has so much interest in cars
Probably because there's a lot to talk about, and it gets them a lot of views.
That's good imo
I just watched a video criticizing their obvious agenda against Tesla . Not surprised to see them trying to promote more vroom vrooms.
It's their business, too, probably!
@@adamkimmV and a lot of hate
You forgot to mention how stickers add 100hp each.
Dary1k can’t forget the fart can that adds an extra 50hp
You forgot the racing stripes
Alex Stroud we almost forgot the quadruple wing
This reminds me of rgb jokes on pcs
And racing flames and go-faster stripes
You guys forgot to mention the racing seats add +50 horsepower.
Lemon yeah and each sticker you add, it's an additional 5hp each
Nah, a spoiler cuts it.
Racing seats are lighter... Its not +50 but hey its something

“This car is spinning at 8,000 RPM “ ,,
not a good start
car be like "WEEEEEEE"
Not to hate on you but on dynos car are dyno’d in 4th gear to have a 1:1 ratio of engine rpm and transmission so therefore yes the car is actually spinning at 8000rpm
@@shadi_vq2246 dont think you get the point
@@shadi_vq2246 wooosh
@@shadi_vq2246 it is supposed to be the wheels are rotating for that rpm
Short answer: it is measured by how many horses can pull the car for 10 meters
Long answer: the video
3:08 where the video actually starts
Jokes Oops thank you
Good looking
And still goes nowhere in relation to the title.
Okay... So what's that in Camelpower?
1 Camelpower = 700 Horsepower
We Americans want to make it harder because we're a bunch of d#cks
And now we just abandoned Miles/hr and changed it to
Budweiser Per Freedom Eagle
Welcome to America
Chi chan their torque is measured in humps!! 🤣
You're everywhere
For mustangs, horsepower is how fast you will hit the wall, and torque is how many people you will drag with you.
4:24 ...(HP and torque) those number are the best one we have for telling how capable a car really is.
0-60: Am I a joke to you?
thank you, business insider, for providing me with the knowledge that I never knew I needed, nor questioning it and present it in a very informative, easy to understand and interesting way
Who is watching this after a minute this video was uploaded.
"Those numbers are still the best ones we've got to tell how capable a car is" 4:23. Just look up 0-60 and 1/4 mile times, there are a lot of better ways of looking into a car's performance.
As a car guy I can speak for all car guys and say thank you for explaining things that matter to us to other people. But you forgot a few things like that some other manufacturers hp and lb-ft are measured at the crankshaft rather than the wheels. Let’s say that 707hp Dodge Challenger hellcat you showed actually has about 650 to the wheels. Basically wheel hp is just crank hp after taxes. But great work on the research
As an engineer, I loathe the fact that they omitted the torque-axis in the last graph. The graph they used had a vertical horsepower line and a horizontal RPM-line. If you're going to plot two lines in one graph, make sure to include the proper axis!!
Yes! That was dumb
*Greta: How dare you*
I thought you died
i regret seeing this video now.........
Most high end and high powered cars aren't driven that much due to depreciation, maintenance and impracticality. So their net co2 emissions are equall or less than ypur average family car which is driven way more

You don't measure horsepower, you calculate it.
Well, manufacturers usually advertise Brake horsepower (bhp). This is measured at the crankshaft just outside the engine, (with the engine outside the vehicle and no auxiliary components [alternator, water pump, etc..] attached) before the gearbox and drive train.
The Wheel Horsepower (whp) numbers are ALWAYS lower than what's advertised.
The Challenger Demon is advertised at up to 840HP but only puts out around 700HP at the rear wheels.
Certified motorcycle mechanic here. Fuel doesn't explode inside the combustion chamber. It burns. The dynamometer load is applied by the rollers and not the straps. Please get your facts straight before misinforming the general public.
*Me thinking what is horse power in my mind yesterday*
UA-cam: Here's a video telling you all about horse power.
Soban Shahid look up donut media’s video on horsepower it gets a little more detailed
Lemme guess, they measure power in watts and divide by 746?
Flame decals on the side of the vehicle increases horsepower by 200hp per decal
The dyno sheet you showed is wrong
Hp and torque curves ALLWAYS cross at 5252 rpm, the one you showed dosent
I always thought you just count the number of tiny horses inside.
Buisness insider suddenly turning into Donut media
Maybe mention that factory horsepower ratings are measure at the engine crank not at the wheels like the video implies.
Not always
A very helpful lesson on the subjects of torque and horsepower!
They didn't mention drive train loss. Crank vs Wheel Horse Power. I can already see the clickbait they can do with it "CAR DEALERSHIPS ARE LYING TO YOU ABOUT HP!"
How horsepower is measured in Teslas: G-Force
Only 59k for this thing. In The Netherlands we would have to pay >200k due to emission tax. I hate my life.
@@MisaloSloe how is that good
@@MisaloSloe Cars are a small fraction of global emissions
Torque is how you ran over people with your Mastung while Horsepower is how you drag those people behind.
how did you do it can you share with me , thank you
3:54 didn’t realise that readout lines crossed at 6500rpm now? 😂😂
Thank you so much
You broke this down instead of just the words being mentioned! Commercials prey on people with big words and imply you are stupid, but of course THEY got your back, your money too!
Power to weight ratio is underrated.
Well I thought you would ask a Horse how fast is the Car
How about accelaration ?
Like how many seconds can a car goes from 0-to-100 km/h.
Oughta be a good overall benchmark ?
Acceleration is important. So is chassis rigidity. Brake distance. Handling. HP and Torque are only a small part of driving enjoyment. That’s why Miatas are considered one of the most fun cars, despite having less than 200 hp. Which isn’t much in today’s sport cars.
@@angelgjr1999 yep they don't have alot of HP but they are also very light, low and have good aerodynamics which makes up for it.
@@angelgjr1999 no one really cares about miatas like you say please never mention them again
Horsepower isn’t measured by a Dyno. Dynos only measure torque and rpm. Horsepower is a mathematical equation but simplified horsepower is torque times rpm divided by 5252.
"क्रिकेट पिच की लंबाई कितनी होती है" ? 1Horse power कितने watt का होता है" ?
How much hp do u have Mr. Narrator ?
Almost every time he said horse power (HP) he meant brake horse power (BHP).
0-60 mph and the 1/4 mile test are better indicators

I have to keep remembering this video is highly dumbed down for regular videos, I literally didn’t learn anything and most manufacturers use engine dynos
The mustang is still much cheaper than other cars in the same category.
Lorenzo and??
You forgot to add that RGB adds another 100+ horsepower
Any car heads know why my Mercedes m111.970 engine is only rated for 71 HP when other m111 engines are rated for over 100 HP? (It's in a diesel MB100D)
You were showing the speedometer and NOT the tachometer!
How am i supposed to know what a torque wrench is if i don't know what torque is... didn't learn much...
Thank you
This is the first time I am seeing UA-cam not drunk in an early video. Strange.
Does this apply to cars painted red?
Thanks a lot for this earlier I thought that they race with horses 😁😁😂
You neglected to mention how much better electric engines are re torque versus combustion engines.
The way he explains us hilariously dumbed down 😂😂😂
you didnt explain how the companies mislead you with the power numbers, they rate it at the crank, not to the wheels of the car so really its not 760 horsepower to the WHEELS its to the CRANK which is misleading
If you play the video at 1.5 speed its more enjoyable to listen to.
This video isn’t very accurate! Torque is measurement of how much force is needed to rotate something. In this video, BI used a crank shaft as an example when in actuality, if you bring your car to your local tuner and dyno it, the torque and horsepower figures reflect how much power the car made to the WHEELS not the actual engine it’s self. The average rear wheel drive car suffers a 15% drivetrain loss but that figure varies depending upon which dyno your using. The example used in this video is what some techs refer to as flywheel power or crank power and thats when you dyno the engine by itself which requires the engine to be pulled from the car. Their not wrong but showing a car on a dyno then using crank torque instead wheel torque is a little confusing!
Greta Thurnberg dislikes this video
they tie a string to a horse and see how much power the horse has to use to pull the car. thats how they check for horsepower
So how much is that in duck power again?
Man this guy tells it clearlllllyy....
412 horse power. So that is like 12,000 ducks.
If car's engine produces 400 hp then can one put in big commercial truck?
The quickest....not the most quickly
That’s a cool Honda
>physics
>imperial units
pick one
An average horse has 14 horsepower
They should have put a Camaro ZL1 on the dyno instead
V tech kicked in yo
I know nothing about cars I get ripped off when I buy one and when it needs repairs.
I thought they measured the cars with actual horses on a race track
Am I the only one wondering what this has to do with businesses?
Dude. It's a SHELBY MUSTANG GT 500 . Don't call it Ford Mustang. Shelby models, Shelby tuned cars are whole different game.
how many horses were sacrificed to the car
Better tell us what is the torque
the unit makes me confuse
“This car revs up 8200 RPM!”
Wrong.
Skullcrusher Gaming no he’s not
Alex Gerber I’m just being an asshole. It does rev to 8,250 though.

What's up with the bold tags? 😂
If everyone stops buying new cars manufactures will start making used cars.
I failed physics in school 🙆🏽♂️
Noone thinks horsepower means velocity
a car losses power as it ages
Pls use metric
I honestly expected more Information... :/
If your play eurobeat you add 200hp
When the world measures in watts instead... Ok....
The name mustang adds 100 horse power
So no horses?
Should of talked about wheel hp and crank hp... lol
When I saw them took apart the things of a Tesla motor I felt they r very knowledgeble about things but when I felt they r good and deep in something I felt hard to stand the Tesla side I think go took apart engines r good and knowledgeble too u dont have to do that
So it all depends on TORQUE
No they make 200 horces race in a relay against a car and ad 1 more everytime the car wins until the car looses
as a car guy and business man i feel sexually attracted to your channel lately
Kilowatts = 1 horsepower 746 watts
what i see is just car in dyno and a chart also price tag that make my wallet run
