Our hognose turned one year old in November. We didn’t want him to burmate because he is a popular guy in our house. Unfortunately he has quit eating for about two months now. He has lost two grams of weight. He isn’t very active right now either but he does come up from his burrows for a little but each day. Today we bought him a new UVB and a different brand of mice. Hopefully that helps him wake up and eat. I knows gray and dark and cold so I really don’t blame him.
He’ll feed again soon. It’s common for males, mainly, to go off feed this time of year.
i live in florida and just cover my hogs in a black tarp and reintroduce water every week leave for 150 days

Great information
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed. 👍🏼
So you just leave them for 2 months? No food, do you ever weigh them, give them water every 2 weeks or so, anything to care for them? Getting more moisture in the substrate? Just any sort of care you do during the process i would love to hear about, im a upcoming owner and would love any feedback, im big on routine and being consistent with times, for expample how often to circulate air every day like you said was amazing, but what about checking in on the snakes? I personally would be scared to let them sleep for 2 months😂 nerve racking
@@Pnda_Bear it’s natural. They go longer than that in the wild.
Are there any specific steps you follow for bringing them out of brunation?
I do. Fast warm up over 3 days. 54 degrees to 64 degrees in 1 day, next day room temp around 72 degrees then all heat source on to 84-86 degrees.
Do you have proof that they died because of the substrate being too dry?
How do you know that it wasn't because of other factors?
Were they the only snakes brumated on this dry substrate?
I mean I agree with you that coco coir probably is one of the best substrates to use.
Proof? From the breeders that told me this has happened. Each snake is different when in Brumation. No water/moisture to hydrate tells you this can happen. It’s science.
@@clarity5323 I heard this from 2 breeders, as it was stories from customers. Both just used normal bedding, no water and no moisture for 3 months of brumation. There could have been other factors. I agree with you, as it was a precaution and story I was passing along. I did state that your snake might die, not that it will die. I want people just to use caution when brumating. Thanks for this post. I appreciate it 😀
Hey Joe! Thank you so much for the video!
My baby hoggie rejected her first meal yesterday, she was eating fine 2 times with me and 11 times before with the breeder. I will try to feed her again once more but I wonder if she wants to go into brumation, which I was not planning to do as I heard it's not mandatory. If she wants to brumate, is it okay to brumate at room temperature? I don't really want to breed her but I wanna do what's best for her
I would keep trying to feed her every 3-4 days. I don’t brumate my babies or sub-adults. You can, but it’s not needed. You can brumate at room temps below 70 if you want for a couple months. Some breeders actually prefer that method when breeding.
I'll do that then. Thank you so much!! 😊
