Peter's grandparents are from Czech republic and as such he came to visit them from time to time. Grandparents of my friend knew Peter's grandparents so ... one day my friend came to our local park, Stvanice (Prague, where Mystic skate cup is held annually) with Peter Smolik. And our group of skateboarding friends end up as Peter's local guide for a few days. Truth to be told, we didn't skate much these few days he was in Prague. We spend most of the time in pubs, drinking beers, smoking joints. Having good time. Nonetheless, a few weeks before he arrived we finished our DIY project. We fixed old concrete, water tank (4 meter deep hole in the ground with banks all around. You can find it even today, it's on the Vitkov Hill. When you visit Prague, it's the hill with the huge statue of a man on a horse. The water tank is near the actual military tank which is in front of national military museum located on that hill.) with a little bit of concrete here and there, cleaning it up etc. , but the thing was still extremely steep, rough and dirty. The best of us could do fs ollie and that was pretty much it.
One afternoon, Peter wanted to skate and we thought, maybe he can do something there. So, onward. We arrived at the spot, he tried to cruise around, a few olies. And then? He did nollie bs flip, 360 flip, fs flip and a few more tricks in just a few minutes and he was satisfied and we returned back to the chilling in pubs. It was probably the most insane showcase of skateboarding skill I could see with my own eyes to this day.
Peter is a great guy in the every aspect of the word.

True story: circa 2004 I was like 13 years old and skating with a friend outside a local surf/skate shop when a couple older guys walked up to us. I was skating a Brandon turner board and one of the older guys was like "your board I know that guy brandon turner.. I know all the shortys guys.."
I didn't recognize this guy at all but I knew of peter smolik and had actually seen at least one of his video parts around this time and was impressed so I asked him if he knew peter smolik too..
He was like "I am peter smolik!" He looked so disappointed haha he was still cool and gave us sk8mafia stickers. I had those for a long time after that. My friend gave me so much shit the rest of the day for not recognizing him lol.

Man I can’t think of shortys without thinking of my dude Adam.
He was a huge shortys fan and is who got me into skating around 99 and we skated until about 03-04 until his untimely death
He was my best friend in the world.
Sadly he got schizophrenia and killed himself.
He was all about Osiris shoes and shortys boards and hoodies.
I’d give anything to kick it with him one more time
RIP buddy. I hope you’re up there still skatin bro!

Man, I was in high school 1999-2003 and I had the Peter Smolik shirts board with him rolling the dice and the pigs behind him. Best board I ever had my dad bought it for me. I also had the Peter Smolik Osiris shoes. Dope shoes. So nostalgic it's crazy. I was a Shortys ride or die skater. I remember meeting Smolik at United Boards in Long Beach way way way back. He was working the registers. There was always pros hanging around there and was so stoked to have met him.

I was way into skating from the mid 90s to the early 2000s, and I can say that of the few Retro Ripper videos I've watched of yours that what you say is both accurate and insightful. You also do a great job reporting in an unbiased and respectful way. Please keep up the tremendous work. What you do is greatly appreciated!

In the same respect how does "tweaked" really make sense? Because the lingo s so deeply embedded in the skate lexicon. If you think about it it really makes as little sense as boned. Its just lingo of a different generation.

Great work! A Steve Olson (shortys) episode? He had a Chrom Ball interview not too long ago

Can you discuss age and skating, more specifically in relation to how long people will be be able to skate in the future? As skating continues there's more skaters, better technology, and people are going more towards low impact skating. I think it would be a dope topic to explore, and even athletes in sports like basketball and football are playing longer. Hopefully I can still skate in my 30s and 40s.

I met him at a demo once . I just happened to be skating his pro deck and I didn't know it . He went and took the trucks off his deck and gave his board to me . It was like a 8.25 and I rode a 7.5 so I never could use it , but it was cool

it would be soo sick if shortys got revived and started a new team in 2020! i seriously think it would be a success partly because of a nostalgic aspect, but holy shit,if they put together a sick team with these new insanely good skaters nowadays, it would take the fuck off!!!

I owned a skate shop/skatepark in the late 90's and I remember selling the Peter Smolik shoes. I had a pair and I still have two pairs of those velcro cargo pants in storage. It was cool at the time but I hated the shoes. They were like wearing blocks of wood on my feet. No heel cushioning at all. Loved Smolik's style though.
