  • This is a real fun one for more advanced players. I love mixing in some minor blues lines even over major scale tonalities, since it gives your improv a lot of flavor by - blues - being very familiar to most listeners. And resolving such a flavorful line back to the major landscape makes everything instantly funky and fresh.
This line in particular is very typical for how George Benson throws his funky blues vocabulary over almost any situation. Just fresh!
Here the follow up to a video I did on my favorite George Benson line. This takes the line through all possible positions on the fretboard of the guitar and also provides slow and medium tempo practice-along workouts:

Thanks for that, Frank! I just published another video on this line - in all positions: ua-cam.com/video/z5AyvA3aXyQ/v-deo.html. I remember working this out for several weeks so many years ago. Very valuable experience!

Thanks for sharing. One thing that puzzles me is that almost every guitatist that demos JB does it in C and bases everything around box 1 blues shape.

Thanks for pointing that out! You are absolutely right about that. As I have to admit that this 'box' position is my favorite position to play this line in, I actually did woodshed it in all positions of the fretboard as well as in all keys. And that alone was a great workout. So, stay tuned: I will upload another lesson on this lick through all those positions shortly.

It was C Mixolydian blues ... C major would clash with it.

@Hans Fahling all it is is C mixolydian with an added flat fifth and minor third used as blue notes. There is no C major pentatonic in the lick.
