The easiest way would be to start with swapping in a 3500 v6. If you're keeping the 3100, you will want to upgrade to the 2000+ 3100/3400 heads/intakes, 65mm TB, headers, and a camshaft will get you there or more!

Hey man you seem really knowledgeable about these motors. I have a 3100 sfi in my 02 Malibu been taken solid care of, Do you think I’d manage to turbo and get a worthwhile power increase without replacing the cam+other internals? Given other outer engine upgrades are present
Yes, '02 3100 is what I have in my truck in the other videos. Before I did the heads and cam it was making around 240hp on 6-7psi of boost and It still had more left in it!
would this work with a 98 grand am gt? im trying to find any performance mods before deciding to 3400 swap it as im not sure if it would be a bolt-in swap or not.
3400 would be pretty much a bolt in swap. The 3400 56mm throttle body would be a bolt on for the 3100. I would wait to do the 65mm throttle body until you have large port heads/intakes of a 3400 swap.
So I have a 95 Grand Prix with the older 31OO so small port and 52mm throttle body; is it possible to put the newer 31OO plenum on with the bigger ports and a 56mm to have a bit better air flow plus the notch for the idle air is already there, or would the ports on the lower intake be small like the old intake meaning the lower intake would need to get swapped for any sort of difference
Yes you would need to swap the lower intake to match the upper intake. Also the 00+ 3100 and 3400 only use 6 bolts to bolt the plenum to the lower intake. You would see the best results upgrading to the 3400/00+ 3100 heads that have the larger intake valves... if your going down to the lower intake! I would start with the 56mm TB and see how you like it. The gain is noticeable!
Depends on what Olds you have. The Ciera got an oddball 3800 based throttle body and does not have a simple upgrade. But if you have a w-body Cutlass you should be good to get one from something like a Montana van!
What turbo would be good for a 3100 v6 or would I have to change the intake manifold to a 3400 to even fit one ? (It’s for a 2004 Buick century). Also would I need a bigger throttle body?
Larger throttle body isn't necessary but dose improve power. I have a 3100 in my 1993 Chevy truck with a turbo from 1995 Chevy 6.5l diesel (t3t4), its making around 235-240hp on 6-7psi of boost! That turbo would be fun on a 3100/3400 in a car, or a even a Ebay gt3582! You will want to stay away from anything with t25 flange because most will be too small unless you get into the high dollar specialty stuff.
Is it possible to do a full 3100 to 3400 swap on a 98 malibu? What needs to be done? Majority of Used 3100 has lifter failure. Even maybe a 3500 bottom swap?
Yes you can. The simplest would be a 3400. You will need to get a 99 and older plenum to match your EGR mount. Same with the 3500, but you will need an external crank trigger to make it work. You can use a newer plenum but you will have to make an adapter for the EGR or I believe re-wire a newer EGR valve to work.
Around how much hp difference from doing pretty much a 3400 top end on a 3100, is it a small difference? Is it worth it?, and another question is, is there a cai for these motors, like too where you can completely get rid of some of the vaccum lines and have a straight pipe from the tb to the filter?
@@modeverything1 what about doing a cai on it ? I've seen pictures of a pipe being ran straight out the tb, but do they delete the 2 or 3 hoses that connect to that regular pipe or whatever?
@@modeverything1 and when I watched the video I could barely hear but so would changing the intake manifold to the 3400 do a difference? Is it both I have to change or just the top one
@@Yofatahhhmomma heads, lower intake, and plenum are all the same between your 3100 and a 3400. Only difference is that your plenum says 3100 instead of 3400. The 3400 stuff is an upgrade for the 1999 and older 3100's.
@@Yofatahhhmomma you will still need to drill a hole in the pipe for your intake air temperature sensor and for the breather tube comming from the rear valve cover.
Yo, I got a Toyota Yaris 2010 1L ... Im looking to do some mods however I’m a student in England and obviously in lockdown due to COVID19 and therefore looking for something I can do without going to the shop (I may go if I think it sounds good and gives me something to do) and something cheap. Is there any mods you think I can do. Thanks
Don't know much about the 1L, or what tools you have available... but simple stuff would be to bypass the TB heater hoses (if equipped) don't recommend it it you are in a colder climate, or maybe add a override switch to turn your fan on whenever needed like on the return road at the dragstrip! Hope this gives you some ideas!
so i have a 2003 3.1, do i need to put the 3.4 intake manifold on it? or is it already the larger ports? also i can just swap a 3.4 throttle body on it?
Hey just stumbled across your video on the 3100 ,I just bought a 2002 Chevy Malibu , looking forward to doing some 3.4 upgrades....what's the best place to start?
I would start with the larger throttle body and a higher flowing muffler or a full 2.25"-2.5" cat back. PCM tuning goes a long way on these vehicles, too!
Thanks for the response,I just picked up the throttle body great video btw, thanks again, you being a GM guy you might be able to answer my question as well ,what gives the GM v6 that infamous grumble sound, I love that sound, seems more in Pontiac it seems,I got the Malibu to have that sound
Think its mostly the firing order and the exhaust/exhaust manifold design. I think in stock configuration the 3400 sounds best in the torrent/equinox! But I think the intake design might be part of their sound.
Hey I figured I'd ask a question so I was at the junkyard stumbled across the Pontiac firebird with 3.4 in it , will that upper and lower and plenum fit in the 02 Malibu, Orwell that entire engine drop right in, will it bolt to my transmission
I've commented before, and had a thought after seeing this video. With 3d printers becoming the norm, what could a printed LS style intake do for this engine? Any ideas?
I have thought about this myself.. as for gains it's hard to say. I want to try modifying a lower and upper intake and see if it works any better, but I have a few other projects to finish before that!
I have heard of guys using the large port upper and lower intakes on small port heads, think they had to use large port gaskets. But you will see the best results using the large port heads as well!
I would consider 250-300,000mi to be getting high. Most of the higher mileage ones I have seen the engine was still good, but the vehicle body or electrical issues sent them to the scrap yard. Maintenance is the key to make them last.
A 3400 would be almost a direct bolt in. If your bottom end is still good I would rebuild the heads. If you want more power you could look into doing a 3500 swap!
@@modeverything1 thanks! I've watched a few vids on how to change the gaskets and I think I can do it... Then I guess just take the heads to a machine shop hand have them fix anything broken or out of speck? Engin only has 81k and it's an 01. I could smell coolant a few years ago when I bought it but it passed buyers inspection some how. I figured it would just be a radiator or hose or something. Shoot. Shoot. Shoot. Main problem, I have no shop. Ugh
Yeah working outside sucks, especially when it's cold lol They will most likely do a valve job, change the seals and machine the headgasket surface so that it is true again. Check out the head porting video if you want to get a little more power out of them while it is apart!
Reading my own comments and thinking hey, me too. Welp almost have it back together. $230 for the heads to be resurfaced, $200 for the gasket kit, $160 for a power wrench cause I deserve it taking in this job, hand some odds and ends. The shop wanted 4700. Wasn't too hard with UA-cam, Chilton's, and the right tools for the job. 2-3 days of work with the one man team.
So all I have to do is go to a local salvage yard and remove the tb from a 3400 rendezvous or grand am and it'll bolt right up to my 3100 Buick century without any fabs?
Yes! If your car is a 2000+ you will need a throttle body from a 2000+ 3400. If your car is 1999 and older you will need a 99 and older 3400 TB. There are a couple variations of throttle linkages but I think that is only on the '99 and older!
Sounds like you may possibly have a vacuum leak. Did you use a throttle body from a 2000+ 3400? Maybe try swapping to the sensors from the old throttle body if you didn't re-use them? Was the battery disconnected when you changed it?
Wot tech is the only one that offers them, but you should be able to contact some of the cam manufacturers and they should be able to grind one for you if they have blanks/cores
@@modeverything1 Thank you for taking the time to respond. What are some budget mods I could do to get a little more outta the 3100? Lookin to top out at 200hp just to have a little fun with an old buick.
What year Buick do you have? If you have a 99 and order, the best way to get near you 200hp goal is to change the heads/intakes out for the 2000+ 3100/3400's along with some mild porting (like I did in my porting video!) Headers, 2.25"-2.5" exhaust, 65mm TB and a custom pcm tune/calibration. If you can't find headers for your car, you might be able to use 3500 LX9 (04-06 malibu 05-06 G6)exhaust manifolds with a custom crossover Other than that you would be looking at a cam swap/engine build or a turbo build. I have a near stock 2000+ 3100 in my truck and its making approximately 240hp with 6psi of boost!
@@modeverything1 Thanks for your response, I have a 2000 and I put the throttle body from the 3400 engine to my 3100. I also have a drop in K&N filter, I was looking into a CAI but the stock intake is already by the front fender so I feel like there's no point. I could try a custom tune with what I have now and probably get some more gain. You seem to have much valuable knowledge about these engines, as long as I got that century I'll probably be back for more help with future stuff, thank you! Also, do I have to port out the intakes on my 3100 to accommodate the larger holes on the 3400 head?
I have not dyno or track tested the 56mm or 65mm on a 3100 but it is a noticeable improvement. If I had to guess the 56mm would get you 2-3hp and the 65mm maybe 5-6hp...
Just noticed that someone posted this morning that they picked up 11whp going from 56mm to 65mm TB on a modified 3400! I don't think that it would pick up that much on a stock 3100 though.
@@modeverything1 one more question, are there any other mods that are fairly easy to do with the 3100? I’ve got a 2000 Grand Prix SE and a lot of the work I want to do on it requires custom work
This is very interesting because I don't think "performance" when I think of the GM 3.1. Do you have any dyno numbers to us the before and after effects of these mods? I do love it when anyone takes a nontypical ( example, everyone plays with ford 302s and Chevy 350s) motor and makes it better. I'm curious because I have this motor on my back up car that rarely gets driven (1997 Oldsmobile "under" Achieva)
Sorry no dyno numbers lol, maybe one day in the future! It is a noticeable improvement over the stock 52mm. I would guess that it would be around 5hp... These engines have potential, considering the heads on a 3400 flow better than a 302 ford or a 3800 v6! Lol just not much after market performance unless you're thinking outside the box!
the small port 3100 definitely runs out of air flow around 5800-6200 rpm . if you went from a small port/small TB...... to large everything..... ~15HP (thats what GM rated the large port at over the small port) maybe with the large TB also on the large ports.... maybe 20HP . but going from 160HP to 180 is a noticeable change and it sets you up for larger cams, higher comp, ETC ETC ETC
@@modeverything1 ok I didn’t think it did but was making sure I’m currently chasing down a misfire I think it’s the cheap no name injectors I put in when I re did the head gasket but wanted to ask someone more knowledgeable on how these systems work hopefully the name brand re manufactured ones fix my misfire I’ve got good spark to the cylinder and all my other readings like fuel trim and o2 readings look good
You would need to swap the heads and intakes too. A performance cam would be a good idea too, because your compression ratio will be around 11:1 if you don't use 3400 pistons!
Not much is shared with the 3800 other than the bellhousing bolt pattern and a few things like coil packs. The A-body 3100, 94-96iirc used a 3800 style throttle body and had its own plenum just for that throttle body.
I had an 03 intrigue gls. It ran straight up with my cousin's 02 Monte SS with the 3800. It had more hp and torque. That motor in that car was no joke. I know I'm late with my comment but I wanted to throw my experience with the intrigue out there.
Love the old lined 3100 beretta z26 super easy motor best to keep em stock and just change the muffler to flowmaster super 44 slowest fastest sounding car ever 🤣
Depends on what intake/throttle body you have. I think the century/Ciera got the 3800/3300 style throttle body that has the mass air flow sensor built in. If that is what you have then no, this will not work for you. You can upgrade but it will be a lot more work!
Yes you can use a 3400 throttle body on your 3100. You can use the 65mm too if you wanted but it's more custom to get it to work and would not see as much improvement as the 2000+ 3100

I got a Buick century and it sucks on gas what do you recommend
I would start with plugs, wires, fuel/air filter, o2 sensor and go from there. What kind of mpg's are you getting?
So for my 95 olds 3.1 I just need one from around that same era or what can i use?
Great video!!
Thanks!
Around how much hp difference from doing pretty much a 3400 top end on a 3100, is it a small difference? Is it worth it?, and another question is, is there a cai for these motors, like too where you can completely get rid of some of the vaccum lines and have a straight pipe from the tb to the filter?
I'm not sure if any one makes one still or not, but if you find one listed for the same year Grand Am 3.4l then that will work for you!
The 2003 will have a large port, so you can swap a throttle body from a 3400 of the same year with the same style linkage!
@@modeverything1 thank you bro!
You would have to use the iron heads with that intake and it would make less power than stock.
Can I put the large Port intake off a 2000 Chevy Malibu 3100 onto my 98 Chevy Malibu 3100 with the smaller ports
Lower and upper ?
I have heard of guys using the large port upper and lower intakes on small port heads, think they had to use large port gaskets. But you will see the best results using the large port heads as well!
What would you say is high mileage for the 3.1 and how long should I expect it to last
I would consider 250-300,000mi to be getting high. Most of the higher mileage ones I have seen the engine was still good, but the vehicle body or electrical issues sent them to the scrap yard. Maintenance is the key to make them last.
Guys, my 01 century blew the damn head gasket behind the timing chain cover. Would it be worthwhile to get a replacement motor? Any suggestions?
Ugh
Yeah working outside sucks, especially when it's cold lol
They will most likely do a valve job, change the seals and machine the headgasket surface so that it is true again. Check out the head porting video if you want to get a little more power out of them while it is apart!
id personally do a 3800 swap
@@modeverything1 awesome. Just to clarify, any 2000+ GM vehicle with a 3400 motor/tb will be interchangeable on my 2004 century?
Yes. As long as it is cable operated 3400!
@@modeverything1 thanks for the quick responses!
You're welcome! Let us know how it works out for you!
I did this in my 03 century and now my idle is weird whenever I put it in gear, any thoughts?
Sounds like you may possibly have a vacuum leak. Did you use a throttle body from a 2000+ 3400? Maybe try swapping to the sensors from the old throttle body if you didn't re-use them?
Was the battery disconnected when you changed it?
Where would I get a performance camshaft for one of these motors
Wot tech is the only one that offers them, but you should be able to contact some of the cam manufacturers and they should be able to grind one for you if they have blanks/cores
I have a 1997 Malibu 3.1l ima get that 3.4 Throttlebody . Need information for cam?
Info for the linkage?
Could I take the throttle body from a 3800 instead of a 3400 for same year?
Unfortunately the 3800 throttle body is different from the 3100/3400, and won't bolt up without some customization.
If you can't find headers for your car, you might be able to use 3500 LX9 (04-06 malibu 05-06 G6)exhaust manifolds with a custom crossover
Other than that you would be looking at a cam swap/engine build or a turbo build.
The 2000+ 3100 heads are the same as the 3400 heads, so no difference in port size!
This might be a dumb question, but what kind of power change can I see from this mod?
I have not dyno or track tested the 56mm or 65mm on a 3100 but it is a noticeable improvement. If I had to guess the 56mm would get you 2-3hp and the 65mm maybe 5-6hp...
@@modeverything1 cool, thank you!
Just noticed that someone posted this morning that they picked up 11whp going from 56mm to 65mm TB on a modified 3400! I don't think that it would pick up that much on a stock 3100 though.
@@modeverything1 I’m hoping illl get a little more out of it when I get done building the new exhaust
Lol just not much after market performance unless you're thinking outside the box!
the small port 3100 definitely runs out of air flow around 5800-6200 rpm
.
if you went from a small port/small TB...... to large everything..... ~15HP (thats what GM rated the large port at over the small port)
maybe with the large TB also on the large ports.... maybe 20HP
.
but going from 160HP to 180 is a noticeable change
and it sets you up for larger cams, higher comp, ETC ETC ETC
Will blocking off the EGR cause a misfire
It should not, but it will set a code if the EGR is not disabled in the PCM
@@modeverything1 ok I didn’t think it did but was making sure I’m currently chasing down a misfire I think it’s the cheap no name injectors I put in when I re did the head gasket but wanted to ask someone more knowledgeable on how these systems work hopefully the name brand re manufactured ones fix my misfire I’ve got good spark to the cylinder and all my other readings like fuel trim and o2 readings look good
Doesn’t the entire 3400 intake bolt onto the 3100 with no mods?
Yes, the 00+ intake manifolds are the same between the 31/3400's except one says 3100sfi instead of 3400sfi 😆
Modeverything... U have a video on how to switch out the throttle bracket for your throttle cable??
Sorry I do not. If I can find an older TB i may make one!
That would be great man. Little nervous on doing it with out a guid lol.
What can I use for my 1991 firebird 3.1 v6 which one
You would need to swap the heads and intakes too. A performance cam would be a good idea too, because your compression ratio will be around 11:1 if you don't use 3400 pistons!
Are there any compatibilities with the 3800?
Not much is shared with the 3800 other than the bellhousing bolt pattern and a few things like coil packs.
The A-body 3100, 94-96iirc used a 3800 style throttle body and had its own plenum just for that throttle body.
@@modeverything1 thanks for the video and reply. I really liked the 1990's gm cars with the 3800 like the Bonneville ssei
Cool video man. Where did ya get the 60mm T.B. from?
Thanks! The 65mm TB is from a 3.5L Oldsmobile Intrigue. They were made for a few years around 99-03 I believe.
I had an 03 intrigue gls. It ran straight up with my cousin's 02 Monte SS with the 3800. It had more hp and torque. That motor in that car was no joke. I know I'm late with my comment but I wanted to throw my experience with the intrigue out there.
Literally the 3400 and the last 3100 produced only was a 5 horsepower difference, cuz of the displacement I'd say.
Yes they are pretty much identical, just a larger bore on the 3400.
Will this work for a 2005 century ?
Yes, you will just need to get a TB from a 3400 around the same year or make sure the linkages are the same!
Will this work for my 2001 Malibu 3100?
Yes this will work for you!
@@modeverything1 what about a 1993 Buick regal
If your 93 regal has a 3100 then this will work. If it has a 3.1v6 then you will have to get the stock TB bored out at a machine shop.
Love the old lined 3100 beretta z26 super easy motor best to keep em stock and just change the muffler to flowmaster super 44 slowest fastest sounding car ever 🤣
Can i do this with 2000 lumia?
Yes, if it has a 3100v6!
Can i do this on my 96 buick century 3.1
Depends on what intake/throttle body you have. I think the century/Ciera got the 3800/3300 style throttle body that has the mass air flow sensor built in. If that is what you have then no, this will not work for you. You can upgrade but it will be a lot more work!
@@modeverything1 ill check that out and let you know.
All this would work for my 98 cutlass?
Yes you can use a 3400 throttle body on your 3100. You can use the 65mm too if you wanted but it's more custom to get it to work and would not see as much improvement as the 2000+ 3100
@@modeverything1 awesome, thanks for letting me know.
I'm trying to learn more about my car, what all I can do with it, and how to properly maintenance it. There isn't much around UA-cam or even the internet about it, so anything helps.
@@modeverything1 also, would the 3400 upper intake manifold fit?
@@stirfrysuicide8913 you would need the lower intake and heads too. I have read about people using a the 3400 lower intake on the small port 3100 heads but I have not tried it myself!
