+Nick Maroulis Those speed guns sucked balls, bro. New Zealand "speed guns" always low-balled until 2002. Waqar beat NZ batsmen through sheer pace in several of those deliveries that were "clocked less than 140 kmph" in NZ in 1994. Those deliveries very clearly looked 145-150 in reality.
1996 WC will be remembered for Ajay Jadeja's batting against Waqar's bowling - 2 overs for 40 runs. against a reversing old ball, at 150 kms an hr. without the modern heavy bats. Damage could've been worse.. he got out caught right on the ropes. Waqar will never forget that bashing!
His spell till the last 2 overs was sensational 8 overs 1/23. The ball was changed due to going out of shape, there was no reverse swing and Jadeja played a blinder! Not to mention, Kumble got a few boundaries away as well. It was India's day for sure.

Amir had never captained before, when he got chance it was quarter final against India . He just missed a trick when he gave Waqar 6 overs straight at end. When Waqar was tiring in his last 2 overs Jadeja took advantage. Amir just needed to give Waqar 2 overs in middle of innings

" He truly was the enemy of the middle stumps, those endless Yorkers and toe crushers that annihilated batsmen, at the time when waqar was the most feared bowler in the world, it's true jadeja hit all over in that world cup series for the first time, it was a bit like the Mike Tyson vs buster Douglas when Mike suffered his first big loss, same with waqar he suffered his first big loss to jadeja, but waqar never quits he always comes back stronger. But it didn't change the fact! He still remained a threat through out his career. His later years he lost his pace but he reinvented his self and proved his critics wrong, waqar was dropped many times with injuries and controversies against him, but he overcame the odds and come back stronger, once again proved his critics wrong. I have never seen a player with so much passion and charisma, he was an icon he inspired a generation of fast bowlers, there will never be another like him trust me on that.

Great bowler. Speed and Swing. But not a good worldcup for Waqar to remember. He had a bad game and it happened to be a knockout quarter final against India in India. He conceived 67 runs in 10 overs during that game.
That innings from Jadeja was so heartbreaking. I mean we as Pakistan fans never knew that aspect of him and he showed us in one of the hottest and important games.
Waqa was better than washim. For this reason washim always tried to destroy waqar's career ,and finally succeeded to do that in colaboration with Injamum -ul-haq. Inji made only 27runs in his six innings! Can you beleve ? But Inji was made captain and Waqar was made scapegoat by the corrupt P C B though Waqar toot more wickets than any other bowlers in the then pak team.
Waqar Younis was a great fast bowler. Deadly yorkers and late swing. However, he was past his prime in 96 WC. He was thrashed for 40 runs in 2 overs by Jadeja.
This is the last series waqar had the extra pace and zip . After this he just played as a ordinary medium pacer who had very less impact . His place was in doubt for 1999 world cup and was just place holder till 2003.

Best bowler for Pak in 2003 WC where team politics ruined his few years when he was reaping his experience. The time you mentioned he relied more on early swing and got success so often.
They were few and far apart . That even ordinary bowlers achieve for eg ishant sharma too bowls well on occasions but not a consistent "great" fast bowler . That was the problem with waqar post 1996. He never had the extra bit of zip to trouble the batsmen consistently. Even 2003 world cup he was best bowler among bad performances it was no match winning impact any of them . Just average performance of 7 wickets from 5 matches . Important matches against ind and aus he got hammered for more than 7 per over.

I highlighted only those tours which were extraordinary and bowlers on their peak cant even achieve that. You have cricinfo, please bring out one series, tournament which he played and was useless for his team.
