That just seems incredibly lazy from GW especially since half the cost of the book is apparently for all the lore/art and the rest for rules.

a lot of the 10th ed starter models are adaptations of old models. the neurotyrant borrows heavily from the 2nd edition zoanthrope, the shooty dread is an update and upscale of a classic metal model, terminators are a direct update of old marine infantry designs, which we haven't really seen since primaris were introduced, the termagants bring back some 2e weapon options, etc.
They talked about this theme a lot on the website, but they reslly should have thrown in a separate book or pamphlet in the box itself talking about the history of the game and evolution of the models over time leading up to these designs and connecting them to their classic inspirations.

My personal issue with 40k is simply that theres too much focus on Space marines, imo the xenos are just more interesting but get so little attention.

      @georgewright9223 10 місяців тому +8

I read official GW stats of people who collect and play 40K 60-70% collect Space Marines. So it makes sense from a business perspective. If people stopped buying Space Marines, GW would focus more on Xenos and other factions. I personally hate Space Marines, I think they are boring, lame and too religious TBH. My armies are Aeldari and Tyranids, go figure haha. Playing Tyranids in 10th though as fate dice completely ruined Aeldari.

@@georgewright9223the problem with that is that as soon as they, spot light another army those armies increase in sells. Necrons got boosted with 9th edition. So if they focused on other armies from the start they would have more sells but they still don't. Even then many space marines are flavored not generic space marines and they don't make any flavor just generic. We arnt seeing the old school faction specific space marines with their extra stuff just a cheap sprue. Feels more like space marines are cheaper to make new designs so they push that. All the new primaris are the same guy just a different gun. Hell blaster intercessor, assult, infernus, jump intercessors

For me, the major lore/art shake up happend in 8th edition, new space marine designs brought about a general shift in scale for all factions, there was a 200 year time skip, alot of the stuff you mention you wanted from 10th edition. I think that editions of 40k tend to be hit or miss affiars, they aren't equally impactful. Some editions are like 9th where nothing really changes, GW just wants to bring out a new starter set they know will sell out in hours and some are like 8th where the whole universe is split in half.

I keep hoping for an imperial civil war with 1 faction being more traditionalist and zealous and the other being kind of an "imperial enlightenment" that works with friendly aliens to survive and that pisses the purist faction off.

This does exist already in the lore with quite a few of the books covering various groups "cleansing" or "returning to the Emperor" a wayward planet or system.
From a game point of view that can be used as "justification" for an imperial on imperial (i.e. Space Marine vs Imperial Guard, etc) match-up.

    • @lawrencejones1517

One of the things that got me playing Warhammer Fantasy Battles back in the 80s was the fluff. When Rogue Trader came out, again, the fluff was epic! If you are as much into the background as the game, the current fluff is working in that direction. The Primarch of the Ultramarines has been brought out of stasis and been cured, and he is appalled at what the Empire has become. Cadia has been destroyed, and with it the Rift that has split the Galaxy. There's the shakeup with the Eldar, now identifying as the Aeldari, along with indications that the Chaos god Slaanesh is going to be destroyed by them. and last but certainly not least, they brought back the Squats! There is quite a bit going on with 40K, if you look at more than just playing. Now if they would just bring back void weapons.....

For me, the biggest problem with GW is the 'give us your money - NOW' mentality. I tried to keep up with the Kill Team releases but there was never any advanced notice of when the boxes went on sale, you basically got 1 week warning and could not budget for the release. Even if you had the money to spare you then had about 30 seconds when the product was available. Limited release is fine as a marketing trick but core rules (like the recent Necromunda Book) and season box sets (as with Kill Team) should be available for at least the whole of the season. Dictating when we spend our money is not the way to run a business. GW is basically becoming the Imperium of Man - they want to eliminate the Xenos/Chaos (read competition) and control the populace (tell us what we can buy and when we can buy it). As with an increasing number of people I am looking at other systems and from a painting point of view (my main interest) I prefer the less detailed/fussy minis made by companies such as Mantic/Corvus Belli/TT Combat. I will still be buying Necromunda stuff though. (And one day I may get my Core Rules paid for pre-order).

9th edition also introduced a new visual aesthetic for peripheral stuff like the logo and the box art which helped it feel more “new”. The biggest shake up for 10th are the rules which are invisible to most people.

I've been feeling a similar fatigue with GW models, at least with 40k. I've been collecting since 5th edition, and recently I just don't care that there's new scouts, or jump pack primaris, or slightly upscaled terminators. I'm glad there are new genestealers models, but I already had 72 (that I can only field 30 now?). The new Pyrovore doesn't interest me, especially at the cost.
However, I have taken the plunge to finally collect Skaven, and I'm enjoying the building and kit-bashing process. Different aspects of the game and universe interest me at different times.

I picked up the leviathan box and really love it, as i imagine most people do the first time they get their first box. I love the painted army displays, reading about characters for the first time, etc.

I think for me it's how rushed and undrafted rules wise things have been for 10th. My brother and I both have painted armies - we love to paint, but no idea how to play. 😅 So we decided that 10th was when we were going to buckle down and learn. I read the physical data cards for my army (Drukhari) and was appalled at how much was missing, from obvious keywords (forgetting that aircraft should have fly was a bit daft, or that one of our leading characters needed her unit type) to entire weapons. The kicker was when my brother bought the space marine data cards and paid nearly the same amount of money to have a pack a good inch thicker than mine. Okay, Drukhari haven't got anywhere near as many units as Marines, but they could at least have given a substantial price difference considering the difference in the amount of the cards.
The launch honestly feels like it was handed to the work experience kid to do.

The thing with GW's current business model (< heh, "model") is that if you're the sort of person who just wants to paint their miniatures, then you could arguably say you're living through a veritable golden age of aesthetically pleasing products to choose from - golden in the sense of sculpt quality and golden in the sense of how ruinously expensive they are ;p
However my heart goes out to anybody who actually plays any of GW's games, especially 40k, and especially anybody who plays competitively, given the breakneck pace they update some of heir systems for reasons that are almost blatantly money-grubbing. The fact those 10th edition space marine data cards came out in June, and then GW "legended" a significant chunk of the units represented therein in July, demonstrates either breath-taking incompetence or wilful lack of long-term planning on the companies part.
*EDIT:* You putting those 9th and 10th edition rule books side-by-side demonstrates everything I hate about release cycles now, and why I'm incapable of allowing myself to get invested in a lot of mainstream games anymore. It's one of the evident examples proving that the likes of GW and WOTC aren't so much interested in making new editions as they are making their customers pay recurrently for the same stuff.

What makes me interested in buying GW minis tends to be if I feel like I can use them outside of their intended purpose. The new humans they're releasing for AOS would make amazing city guards in a DnD campaign, lots of the Killteams would look awesome exploring Space Station 0. I'm not great at actually using them for ANY purpose outside of Bloodbowl, but I'm far more likely to care about buying and painting something new if it's got some cool unique sculpts and I feel like it'd have more than 1 use.

I agree with a lot of this. I feel like one of the reasons there hasn't been a large shake up of lore is because a lot of 40k fans, like GW themselves are afraid of change and doing something vastly different. Honestly, it's the models and lore that keeps pulling people in, so changing that would be like switching out your only scoring player in a match of sport. They've been making the rules "more accesible" for years now, and that seems to work. More people seem to be getting into Warhammer.
Change also doesn't really work for 40K. It's about perpatuating war, where no one faction is ever gaining ground.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and very interesting comments. I am 90% a painter and player of historical minis. Most periods I am interested in (Ancient Rome, Dark Ages Europe, American War for Independence, US Civil War) have been covered by multiple rule sets and manufacturers. So historical players do not depend as much on one rule set or manufacturer. However, I find that as I grow older, I get interested in new periods or models. That gets me into new companies or back to old ones that had lines that I did not learn about when they first came out. It is troublesome finding minis for games that have gone out of print 5 years ago.

I think that because of the success of Vermintide and Total Warhammer games, GW is trying to get some of that Old World grime into AoS. But its totally valid that Age of Sigmar appealed to you because it was so different. I hadn't really thought about it before but it was a strength that AoS was quite different from 40k. Hopefully they can still remain distinct.

I get excited every time your new vid pops up in my recommended feed. I was still on the fence about Leviathan, so I appreciate your perspective on it. Space Marine person, but I think I'd also like to have some more variety. Definitely Starcraft vibes. I felt this box was was underwhelming as well though. I imagined there'd be a special anniversary edition box or something. I also regularly want better from GW, but I still love Warhammer.

My group has also been feeling fatigue over GW. We love the models, but the fact they have not embraced digital for codex and army books blows my mind. Had warhammer Plus subscription unlocked all the rules and books, paying $70-90 a year would have been a no-brainer... but dropping 3k per edition on books that copy and paste a good chunk of fluff just is not a sustainable model.

I totally understand what you're saying for years. I strictly bought GW, and over time, I just didn't feel it anymore, and then I found Rackham models, and I was blown away, and I was all in. I still like GW it's just not my 1st choice. I look at other models 1st, then gw 🤔

I’m glad you mention the melding of the two game’s artstyles, the new cities stuff was something I was really looking forward to but the aesthetic drifts closer to 40K than I’d like. I’m working on ways to convert the models to be a bit more like the old aesthetics but the story changes still create some dissonance for me. Just glad that someone else has a similar view when I’ve largely just heard people enjoying the changes (which is totally fine btw, just for me some changes lose elements of what I liked about the faction)

i'm more of a fan of the new aesthetics than the old (PLEASE give humans armor), but i agree that the overall vibe gets way too close to 40k for no good reason. i got into AOS because it felt lighter than 40k or WHF. Stop making AOS like 40k.

It is really bad how the corpo part of GW is affecting the game. You can usually tell when a choice is made for investors. For the story, I guess it feels a lot more dynamic when you are just starting but I love the universe too much to step away.

Last year I said no more. Stress levels are down. And my hobby has become fun again. I love the old world setting however frankly TOW hasn’t even got my juices going as I know it’ll be too expensive and stressful.

Retro set would be awesome! Some old style retro terrain ruins and trees or something too would be sooooo good!! What I really want from gw tho is Mordhiem! I hope they don’t ruin it tho and do it justice with one big rulebook containing everything needed to play with every every faction, then have some cardboard buildings (to save on making it super expensive, but plastic would be great too) and 2 factions to play with, of course would need some dice and wippy stick rulers too 👌🥰

Absolutely agree. My AoS 3rd starter is unopened as I pre-ordered and was totally underwhelmed by the rules. I MUCH preferred 2e. 40K had such potential at launch of 8th. Then 9th. Then I gave up because it’s just the same unbalanced mess with more paint slopped over top. Sadly, I find OPR to be a bit TOO rules light. 3e of that is sounding promising, but we’ll see. Reasons I’m fiddling with my own adaptation…

Equally I became a dad wight around the time Dana started her channel ( so it's cool to see my baby grow as well as Dana's channel grow). But Injust don't have time to game anymore 😊

Did not get super into the hype of 10th edition recently because I started playing T'au during the 9th and I don't really enjoy their new rules for 10th so I started a turn towards AoS, which is bringing me a lot of fun with the recent Seraphons and Gitz new models!
But I didn't hear of the Combat Patrol "battle ready" lists before! And I think this is a huge improvement from before, because list building in 40k is really really hard with the different weapons for each model/unit! I think it's gonna be good to be able to test a new army by buying their Combat Patrol and starting with that only!
Also for the profit driven part, it is obvious and not very good for us overall, but I like to point out the fact that the entire rules of 10th edition are available online for free for small budget players, and that is great in my opinion!

All rules should be free. The books should be only about art and lore. The game. The game should be extensively game tested, simple to learn and reasonably balanced and focus on war-scrolls or data sheets…

They probably should have waited four leagues of votan and the lion for 10th edition. Having the lion shake things up at the same time as the leagues of votan showing up, and having them interact would have been exactly the shake up you wanted. Possibly even along with vashtor. For some reason though they did all of that during 9th. I love the new Tyranid models but they would have made more sense either during 10th or during 9th not as the new box.

No dice. That's what makes the Leviathan box feel so underwhelming. Your inner dice goblin is sad.
About combat patrols - totally agree, it's nice to be able to access so many factions. Also because the lists are fixed, you've got more room to proxy models with something else on the same base size/footprint. You can actually play a bunch of the SM patrols with models you probably already have from previous editions. For Sororitas, I think you're just missing the Rhino, any tank around that size would do.
Save those precious canuck bucks for companies that put their customers first!

I could see you potentially getting excited for Necromunda. Stylistically, you could position it somewhere between AoS and 40k, more to the grimdark, weird, and satirical side. The lore is fun and even hilarious at times, and it frequently hits that niche appeal you mentioned when talking about Kill Team warbands. Plus, the game itself is a whole lot of old-school, chaotic fun, and is currently my gaming group's favourite of all the GW games. We've been playing our campaign (the best way to experience 'Munda, IMHO) for over a year now, and it's incredible what a great story generator the game is. Also, there's a reason why #everymodelisanecromundamodel exists.

I feel the same way as you do about combat patrol about Kill team.its why I have SEVEN Teams.
I like the small form factor of the game model wise but since unlike you list building is one of my favorite parts and I like the fact that a kill team roster is 20 models no more
I've got 20 slots to fill and I'm going to do my best to fill those 20 slots then I'm going to name each operative and give them their own backstory and fluff and then I get to track their battles in my custom spreadsheet that I made for that purpose.

i loved the settings, still find some new changes interesting, but have dropped out of love with gw for rules and even to some degree newer lore/releases and am enjoying other systems and settings, as well as feeling less bound to specific models and the power creep that exists in the game. the most interest i have had in recent years was the made to order valhallans and the upcoming made to order older fantasy miniatures, like the old marauder giant.
the 2 things gw related i am looking forward to is playing older aos rules and necromunda at some point this year, if games group can meet up :D

You make so many good and fair points in this video. I can’t go hard against GW because they have a place and are a huge market share of this hobby space. However, I’m so happy that you have been willing to give other games their paces. I just want people to feel empowered to take control of their hobby. No one can own it except for you.
