IUI, or intrauterine insemination is a fairly common fertility treatment. It can help maximize your chances for pregnancy. As a doctor who sees fertility patients every day, one of the most common questions I get asked is “Why didn't my IUI work?"
It’s a great question because there are many factors that come into play with intrauterine insemination. If you're my patient, we'd start by checking the fallopian tubes, uterus, and sperm quality first.
But let's say you've done the #TUSHYcheck, the tubes are clear and everything else looks good. So why doesn't IUI work?
The answer I share with my patients is: because you're human. Yes, it's really as simple as that.
To put IUI into perspective, 90% of the time it doesn't work.
So if your IUI didn't work, I want you to know that there's nothing wrong with you, and you're normal and human. It's that simple.

Great info as always. My IUI failed but I didn't know that the success rate is only 5%! I spent my time and money for nothing. I went straight to IVF afterwards and I'm currently 34 weeks pregnant! Love your videos! Please keep on posting.

I had my 1st iui two days ago. The procedure itself was fine for me, but had terrible cramps after. Took two pain killers and drank water before procedure and this helped a bit.
Hi Dr, I have multiple fibroids, my FS has wanted me to take 50mg clomid per day for 5 days before IUI treatment. Does this increase the size of the fibroids? I don't have any ovulation problem. Do I really need to take clomid to help IUI treatment? Thank you so much for your answer!

Thank you for posting. I had an IUI that was successful and another that ended in a missed miscarriage. I just wanted to know why. If I should even keep trying IUI at 39. My Obgyn will do IUI, but I can’t afford a fertility clinic/IVF. I’m a single mom by choice.
my doctor suggested to have relation on day 10 ( iui will be on day12) , is it good to go for relationship? my another question is, from many videos I've seen that everyone sex a lot after iui, is it recommended?
Jaymin Patel my recommendation is to have sex even every day leading up to the first follicle check and then based on what we see we can decide if we should wait and abstain or not. There’s so much fear about sex and mis-information about “saving up.” I strongly suggest having sex at least the night before the follicle check. I’m definitely in agreement with your doc.

We just have a 5th failed IUI all tests normal including no blocked tubes.... I was so discouraged and thought maybe something was wrong. But this made us feel so much better so thank you. Taking a break and hopefully after that we will get a positive test💚

Hi Dr. Aimee, what fertility pills are you referring to? Clomid?
I prefer femara (aka letrozole) over clomid. Clomid has harsher side effects
Hi I’m tara and I’m 25 will be 26 in September My HSG test was good hormones are good and husband has perfect sperm and I’m supposed to have IUI soon but I will be taking progesterone for 10 days then when I start my period on the 2nd day I start letrozole and then have the procedure so with my age and things do you think this is a good option to do?

Do you know why my Sperm Morphology shows under strict Kruger, 3% normal morphology (poor) - strict normal,
Although the regular Semen analysis my other Doctor ordered showed 10% normal morphology ? Which value am I to believe ? Had repeats of both with similar results.
Would fertility herbs interfere with Femara? Such as vitex, maca, primrose oil and royal jelly?
I know not every doctor has the same opinion. I generally ask patients to stop fertility herbs when they are in treatment. But as your doc. See what they say! I have an herbalist I work with. I share the names of herbs with her and the manufacturer info then she tells me what she thinks as to whether they are safe to continue or not.

i just finished my 3rd IUI insemination yesterday and onmy 2 week wait. i did workout on my 1st and it failed. on my 2nd just did brisk walking and failed. I want this time to be succesfull as possible. I have been working out all my life . Can I ask if you are allowed to workout like brisk walking on a treadmill for 30 mins or 40 mins but in an airconditioned room and do pilates 30 minutes. And also do you advise to drink a cup of coffee in the morning while on a 2 weel wait? thank you
Barbie Lee hi Barbie. Thank you for asking these questions. I typically tell patients that one cup of coffee a day is safe and won’t harm your pregnancy chances. Same for low impact and low intensity exercising. Walking on a treadmill is the exact type of exercise I tell patients to consider during the two week wait. If you are very bloated from ovulating then perhaps take a break. The best thing to do is to listen to your body and if something hurts then stop doing it. I think you’re doing things safely

Thanks for the informative video. I am 32 years old, but difficult to have intercourse due to husband's ED. As far as I know, there are no other fertility issues with us, the only thing stopping from getting pregnant is ED which makes intercourse very difficult. Do you think we have a good chance with IUI?
Has he done any testing yet? Testosterone, semen analysis? I would recommend that he does if not done already
@@EggWhisperer Thanks for your reply. He did a blood test to check for testosterone a few days ago, we have not heard results yet. He can produce semen no problem, it's the actual intercourse we struggle with because I think he has severe performance anxiety. I understand there is therapy etc. but the thing is we both would really like a baby soon, that is why I am looking into IUI. I figure if we can at least try to start a family we can figure out the other issues later because after all, I am not getting any younger. I believe we may have a good shot with IUI because as far as I am aware, there are no issues with our fertility.

Why would you want a patient taking progesterone immediately after the IUI? Wouldn't you want to confirm ovulation has occurred first before taking it?

Dr. Am 42 yrs desiring to have another child but my ovarian reserve is very low, my AMH is at 0.46 and a prolactin levels at 539. Can I still get pregnant when my levels are low. Waiting for your timely response. Am also diabetic though controlled.

I know you do. I want it just as badly for everyone who is here on my channel. I would say, it really depends on your age and how many kids you want and your hormone levels. Consider an HSG if not done already as well. I don't have any grants. I hope I will in the future.
I had all my testing. Fertility clinic says im fine to have a baby. Used a donor with 3 healthy boys. Just got another negative at 11dpo 😔☹️. My period is due in 3 days

took Letrozole 5mg cd3-7 on 2 cycles both with IUI and were unsuccessful. I now been told to take combo of Letrozole and Clomid. will this give me a better chance? diagnosis is unexplained infertility. thank you!!
That's one option. The other is to go up on letrozole to 7.5 mg instead! less side effects that way.
Hello, sorry if this May be a silly question; should progesterone be initiated the night of the iui? For example; IUI completed in the morning and starting progesterone same night? Thank you for your help!

Probably spent enough to pay for IVF on doing multiple rounds of IUI because my fertility doctor requires at least 6 rounds of IUI first. Super uncomfortable each time. Wish I knew some of this prior.

Probably the most expensive service for no guarantee. What else do we pay thousands ofdollars for, with only a 5% chance of getting something out of it?
I'm mainly concern about the risk of having birth defects or Down Syndrome etc because of IUI because of the absence of natural barriers that helps eliminate the weaker sperm cells..I've searched online for more info about this but there aren't enough ...does it all come down to luck then? Or what about egg quality in IUI? How can I be sure the egg that's released is of good quality or not? Compared to IVF where the eggs are tested, right? Is IUI not a good option if I'm concerned about birth defects, Down Syndrome etc? I'm 39 and hubby has a mild motility issue... I hope you answer my question doctor, thanks in advance!
If you are concerned just do genetic testing at 10 weeks or ivf with preimplantation genetic testing!
How much more does cost go up for a double IUI?
I know couple of people who have had 2 IUIs and 2 pregnancies (of which one live birth, currently pregnant). Talking about beating the odds! The other one younger the other one 40+ 42 (coincidentally fellow redheads!).
I am 38, really wanting 2 kids but trying first time IUI just to see how it goes. Letrozol & Pregnyl right from the beginning. It feels annoying being this drugged but hey the things that you do.. I'm on a public clinic and they won't automatically check the fallopian tubes but then again I am super healthy and everything. This whole thing is practically free so I am sort of in no position to demand staff. 🤔 My follicle was obviously checked and IUI with trigger shot simultaneously and I ovulated sharply 24h later.
IUI itself was super uncomfortable (just like the Pap check) - almost to a degree being traumatic. I drove the 256km journey to the University hospital myself, we got first snow on the very day (North Finland) and this elderly gentleman crashed my car.. you could say that not a perfect setting for a calm procedure.
Anyhow, doctors really need to start taking women's pain seriously! Traditionally this hasn't always been the first priority.
After my terrible IUI day I have had my own fun(masturbating) almost daily to create tiny bit normal conditions and much needed oxytocin (vital in implantation, ). I am a Choice Mom using donor sperm currently on my 2 weeks wait.

I just had my first IUI and it was a fail. Planning on the second round. I'm praying it works out this time. Don't give up. I cried for 5days prior to going to the fertility clinic for my HCG test because I tested at home and it kept coming up negative. I just knew I wasn't pregnant on day 14 DPO IUI. I prayed about, cried to God and I'm much better now with loads of hope and faith that the next one will turn out positive. Sending baby dust your way and my way as well ❤️

1. Today we received a follicle check. Left side 27 right side 23 and lining 10mm. Is there a certain size that a follicle reaches and ovulation occurs?
2. IUI is scheduled for Monday with a trigger shot on Sunday is this too late? I'm scared that I'll ovulate before Monday.
3. Does the trigger shot take control of the ovulation? My husband has low and slow swimmers so I just want don't want to miss my window.

I just did my IUI on Oct. 17th and i took my blood test for my pregancy test and my test was negative as of Nov. 1st so my IUI failed and this was my first one.
So why fertility clinic even start with iui if the success rate are so low? It's a waste of time, so stressful and pricy. I'm doing this solo and it's hard on the mental part as well.

I’m 29 and want to do IUI. My husband passed away from cancer but I have his sperm frozen at a sperm bank in case we wanted more children. Do you think IUI would work. Everything with me is fine I’ve never had any issues.

Can your tubes become blocked after an HSG sonogram says that one tube is open? Like could that one open tube become blocked?
I don’t know but on my first IUI , I got pregnant but later on I missed carried at 10 weeks. I just finished my 2 IUI but I believe this one failed.
I'm really sorry. If you haven't done the steps in: tushymethod.com or angelmethod.com talk to your doc about what they think you should be doing to understand better what you can do differently next time.

So if each IUI only has about a 5% chance of success, why do we expect results after 3-4? Is the success rate cumulative so that by IUI 4, you would have a higher success rate by then?

40 so the iui is less successful than say a 22 year old
Some of us can’t afford a double IUI, meds, and monitoring. So it’s not that simple to “just ask your doctor” I’m a lesbian so nothing is covered by insurance. So I’m paying for the procedure plus an extra $800 for sperm. Per cycle.
Sadly nothing is covered by insurance for a lot of people. My companies insurance offers zero coverage

My age is 29. Should I go to iui? I have regular periods and my tubes are open.
Do you know the rest of your tushymethod.com results? Sperm is good? If Sperm is good and your egg counts + hormone levels are good too, then do consider IUI. My approach is diagnosis before treatment. Be sure to look closely at sperm and confirm with your doc that the sperm is in a good range for IUI. ballsmethod.com may help you too.

Had my first iui on the 13th and my husband has an antibody disorder on his sperm. My doctor seems very hopefully how would you guide your patient with this?
Great question Caylee, if antibody binding is > 50% then I would suggest not spending time with IUIs.
My hormones are good, tubes are open, partners sperm is good.. I had a laparoscopy 6 months ago to treat mild endometriosis. My consultant has recommended IUI... do you think this is a good idea or go straight to IVF? I'm 28 and my husband is 30.
Jules Smith if you’re tubes are open and sperm is good then you could hold off on IVF however if you’re symptomatic from endometriosis then I would go right to IVF. Endometriosis can get worse over time and especially if you have been trying more than 6months it might make sense to go right to IvF
Im 26 years and had cystectomy of left ovary for severe endometriosis in feb... Now trying to conceive, having letrozole for 5 day now, and waiting for iui process done. Hopefully it will ll work for me

1. What is the success rate for some one with one tube only? 2. Will the tube always pick up the egg even if it is on the opposite ovary?
I just did an iui on Tuesday. Took clomid && triggered on Monday. When I triggered I only had 1 follicle which was 19mm && my lining was thick . Can I still get pregnant ? We didn’t get to baby dance before or after iui . && his sperm count is great !

@@aliciajackson8229 I'm really sorry :( what is your AMH? I would make sure you know for sure both tubes are open with the HSG test. It sounds like these two tests could be the most helpful with what you're describing. Ask your doc too if there's something they can do to increase the # of eggs ovulated to 2. Egg Whisperer Show I would have to ask what is my Amh . && I had a hsg test done . No tubes were blocked. They found a polyp in the cavity of my uterus, so I had to get surgery to get it removed. I’m thinking about ivf. I don’t want another failed iui. But my doctor said she would have to do the frozen ivf because they want to test the embryos. I guess since I had a miscarriage && chemical pregnancy . I don’t have Instagram . I wish I could see it .
I had a scan that showed endometrial hyperplasia what's this mean my doctor is away I'm stressing
Endometrial hyperplasia is a diagnosis based on a biopsy done from the uterus. Make sure you have your accurate diagnosis so you can find out your prognosis and treatment

I have unexplained infertility... I ovulate every month and my cycle is like clockwork every 28days.
I am on my 6th IUI coming up this week... I always trigger w/ovidrel 24hrs before the IUI per my doctors instructions. I have an IUI at 24hrs and a 2nd at 48hrs. Whenever I take the trigger shot I feel like I am ovulating right away, within a few hours.... I have mentioned this to my RE and he insists that is not possible, I have even asked if I can trigger closer to the 1st IUI and he has said no. I know my body and I feel like we are not timing the IUI properly, what is your experience with this? Could I be ovulating sooner than expected? I am very sensitive to medication.

lima viswam I would have him see a urologist if he hasn’t already for a complete work up and if the motility is low and you can’t improve it then do ivf. Likelihood of success with low motility is very low but I’ve seen it happen before!

Hi dear, what was the result?
I'm a 30 year old that has been trying for 6 months now with no luck. Last month, I did go through a chemical pregnancy for the 1st time. I went to a fertility clinic at 3 months of trying and did all the standard tests along with my partner and everything came back normal range. The only thing left to do is do something called a sono histogram so they can check my tubes. I also have a regular 28 day cycle. I'm thinking if I should do iui to speed up the process or not.
Sounds like they are doing all the right things. Checking the tubes is the best next step
I feel so heartbroken and discouraged. We had 3 mature follicles(20-22mm), both been on supplements for months and months, naturally had an LH surge, and trigger shot. Yet it didn’t work. :(
Camille Swartzendruber you’re only human, remember that. You are resilient and strong. Talk to your doc about why your treatment didn’t work and make a new plan. Make sure you know your diagnosis too.
Did you do IUI?
My cycles are regular but span from 30 to upto 40 days. I got my follicles , progesterone,thyroid checked and all are normal. My AMH is 1.8. Both husband and I are 34 years old.His semen analysis also came out fine. We never took any contraceptive pills nor is there any infertility in the family.We tried to conceive for a year in vain.There after we tried twice with just medication and hcg shots also failed. The second cycle of treatment with hcg, my doc gave me 5000 mg of hcg..but i did not ovulate within 48 hours.Then she gave me another shot of 5000 mg and I ovulated. But again I got my periods this month. My doctor says we are both healthy and should be able to conceive naturally.Its now been almost 2 years. These frequent visits to the clinic and pills are making me feel like I have some kind of disease. My eggs are growing normally. What do you think is the reason of my unexplained infertility? Do you think I would have a good chance at IUI?

This is very high time to look into your lifestyle. Completely avoid fast foods...maintain correct BMI and do regular exercise...have more plant based proteins...you will get soon
@@gopikakrishnan2942 i don't eat fast food, aerated drinks etc...also my bmi is perfectly within limits.. I did one attempt at IUI also which failed ...I don't want to go through it again as it is terribly painful

Really depends on the dose of meds used and your body size.

@@lifewiththestones1435 more than 3 isn't a good idea. You are right. You could over stimulate. There are some situations where I do try to get more than 3 to ovulate: if there's a tubal blockage, really low sperm counts/patient age is over a certain age. It seems like over 3 in your situation could be too risky.

Just "no one explained it"......By doing your TUSHYcheck, you should be able to talk to someone about the possible issues could be. I'm not sure where you live, but I could possibly provide you an opinion if you'd like one.

chances are still good but ask your doctor: 1. what is my diagnosis? 2. what are my chances of pregnancy with this treatment? 3. Will I reach my family size goals in this way?

It depends on your fertility levels. If you aren't perimenopausal yet, then it could be worth trying.

Statistics depends on your age: if 40 for example chances are around 5 percent

My doctor said the same but for the six month period of trying 3 IUI’s? Up to 10% chance each time with using Clomid. Cumulative 25% chance. Maybe that’s what your doctor meant?

Why do you suggest double IUI to your patients? The overwhelming majority of the existing medical literature on this topic shows no benefit of double IUI compared with a single IUI, and double IUI certainly increases treatment costs for the patient.
Dear Manai. I don't suggest it unless indicated. There are some very clear indications as who double IUI could help aaaand :) the literature supports it too. @@herhairfetish1 I have patients consider it in cases where sperm quality may not be good, there are issues in the bedroom, you’re using donor sperm or you want to try something new. I don’t think it really increases chances by thus much though. The egg age isn’t something I take into consideration when discussing double Iui. Great question!

Consider taking fertility pills to help you ovulate on the open side. See your doctor for a follicle check too so you know if you have a chance that cycle.

@@helenaankamah4263 no, IVF is how you get pregnant when tubes are blocked. If you do get pregnant naturally it means the tubes weren't really blocked. So it's not possible sadly to get pregnant without IVF when you have tubal blockage.
