What a lovely journey on a beautiful day. The murals & plaques around town are useful & interesting. I love the mural at 15.24 showing Noddy Holder at an anvil. Great video, thanks.
Great video which nicely captures the atmosphere of the West Somerset Railway as well as the beautiful countryside through which it passes. Watchet looks a gem and obviously takes a pride in its historical associations. The former tramway looks well worth an explore. Very enjoyable and informative. Thank you.

Thank you Ron! Sorry I have been late to your video this week - a batch of videos to edit, as well as a lot non-UA-cam things to do recently too. Yes, the WSR is well worth the trip down the railway from Ashchurch to Taunton (and bus to Bishops Lydeard) or that horrid M5. Unfortunately, it was the dreadful M5 for me this time. I was waiting at Cam & Dursley Station for my through train to Taunton, but I noticed that the Worcester SH bound train on the opposite platform was stuck there for ages, and no other trains were going through southbound. The driver got out and started shooing sheep off the line!! The line was closed for ages, and my through train to Taunton (it was going on to Penzance) was cancelled, and all the others were very late, so I drove and claimed my money back for my ticket. I wonder if GWR will claim money back from the sheep!! As with all these preserved lines, the volunteers do a fab job. Thanks for watching and commenting Ron - always a pleasure to hear from you. Paul.
Hi Paul, well it was called Watchet, so the least I could was ...... watch it!! And what a place it is to visit too. You captured so many interesting details like the memorial to the poor goose Derek who met her grisly end there (apparently Derek was female!!). And the statue to the ancient mariner, I was aware of the rime but had never read until today and it's very long but an interesting story. Given the rimes link to the Albatross, when you went for your ice cream I hope you asked for two choc ices!! (Monty Python). The sound of steam is always powerful even when the engine comes coasting in. It came across really well in the video. The story that you recounted in the comments of sheep blocking the line is incredible, especially given how well fenced railways normally are. Yes, I saw Mike Dan's (The Admirals()Corner Channel) video about it, and the unveiling of the statue which wasn't universally popular if I recall! I have no idea how the sheep got onto the mainline - it was blocked for nearly two hours! Not aware of that happening before - but a cow did get on the other mainline near me, because someone wedge a gate open on a pedestrain foot crossing (doh!) . I am a bit daunted about the military railway one! Hope I don't get arrested by the MOD Police! I am not planning to go anywhere that I shouldn't - just show in the video what you can see from roads and footpaths, as well as the history and some photos that I have. Well done for participating in the charity match - brilliant! Take care David, Paul.

The audio on this needed a lot (!) of work in post production - glad to hear (!) that the final version was fine though - thanks Louise. I was talking far too quietly walking around Watchet - it was very quiet there - I think since the road closure (landslip) it gets a lot less visitors and traffic - which is both a good and a bad thing for the town. It is a super town though, and that mural was most impressive. Glad that the sheep on the line earlier in the day did not put paid to my plans entirely. Thanks again Louise, Paul.
Hi Paul. Good upload. It's nice to see the stations are in pristine condition while retaining the colour scheme of the old GWR. I am dying to go back here and ride this line between Taunton and Minehead, a few years ago they trialled re-opening the connection between Taunton station and Bishops Linyard for 6 weekends I think (the hope to make it a permanent weekend thing (or at least in the summer!). Not sure if anything ended up coming from this though. Lovely video though which has captured the beauty of the line!
Thank you Jesse and thanks for your kind words. Yes, Norton Fitzwarren Station is an oddity. The WSR spent a lot of money rebuilding it (and the associated turnback triangle) but it very rarely gets used, and you can't visit it, because it only has rail access (no road or footpath goes near it - maybe because of the nearby MOD depot?). I think that there is a train coming from the Severn Valley Railway down to Bishops Lydeard next Saturday though, which will use it, and the connection from the mainline at Taunton. It is such a shame that there aren't regular trains from Taunton to Minehead over the line, in addition to the steam and diesel specials. The bus journey, although frequent, is rather bumpy and takes a good while, and there are far too many cars on the A39. Thanks again for watching and commenting. Take care, Paul.
Thank you Paul for another lovely video. So relaxing and interesting to watch. Have travelled on the railway a couple of times. You've captured it well.
Thank you Paul. I enjoyed the first part...easy watching with the steam train journey and beautiful scenery. Then I enjoyed the history of Watchet. Yankee Jack made me think of the American Civil War and the fight against slavery. Those who ran the blockade prolonged the war but also brought out cotton. I thought of the Lancashire famine...and families in England depending on work. How interrelated it all was. Finally I thought of Robert Livingstone (son of David Livingstone) who fought on the Union side and died in a Confederate prison camp. Funny how our brains work🙂
Thank you Cathy! Yes, a lot of history around that little port in Watchet - I loved that little town! Lovely and quiet too (although probably not best for businesses though...). Take care, Paul
Cathy That's an interesting fact about David Livingstone I wasn't aware of having a son dying in a Confederate Prison He didn't seem to have held it against welshborn Henry Morton Stanley who had himself fought in the Confederacy
Stephen, that's interesting. I don't think David L knew his son was going to join the Union. It was done secretly. I read a book about David L and I think I read a sad letter from Robert to his father....something about the son feeling he was a disappointment. We are going back soon to ride the length of the line and are so looking forward to it, the history of Watchet is fascinating, I love the information boards around the harbour, I would love to see more of that across the UK.
Yes, the information boards in Watchet were quite new and extensive as well as helpful too. Some places have a few, but others nothing. Thanks for your kind words - yes, it is a super place to visit. Take care, Paul.
Some of the opening sequences at the beginning of this video could have been filmed in black and white and you would have believed you was watching an old film from yesteryear. Such a shame the WSR has never properly linked up with Taunton. Another well filmed video Paul.
The volunteers do an excellent job in recreating yesteryear. Their dedication and hard work never ceases to amaze me. Yes, the WSR's (non) connection to the mainline at Taunton! I don't understand why that hasn't happened. There is even a spare bay at Taunton Station which could be reopened for a DMU shuttle to/fro Bishops Lydeard. They spent ages building the turnback triangle, and a new station at Norton Fitzwarren which hardly ever gets used too! I really don't know why. Such a waste in a way, as it forces visitors into their cars, or onto the unreliable and uncomfortable Minehead busses, which get stuck in traffic too. Maybe one day! Thanks again, Paul.
Somewhere familiar that I can comment on! Well a bit familiar as I have never been there! But as you know I am subbed to ‘ Admiral’s Corner’ & he makes brilliant videos of the WSR. I was hoping he would be down at the station when you visited but no such luck,as he lives in Watchet. I am aware of 'The Admiral's( )Corner' on YT (my mum and dad are big fans) - I have seen a few, but I never seen his face on his videos, so I have no idea what he looks like! Watchet is an absolute gem - I should not say this, and the businesses in the town won't be happy, but in my opinion it is all the better for the road closure. Less traffic makes for a much pleasanter and happier town. It has a very good 30 min bus service from Minehead and Taunton - shame it hasn't got a Park & Ride Bus Service in or near Bridgwater though to serve this super area. I do hope to visit the other stations on this lovely line on my channel - next will either be Crowcombe Heathfield (which I may combine with a Quantock Hills walk, and I understand that Crowcombe has a great church too) or Dunster and its beach, if this very warm spell continues. @@westcountrywanderings i loved the sound of the steam engine's echoing through the valley when we stayed. Watchet is a lovely place, we also went on the Witherslack Hall 6990 into Minehead, Great day out!
Another excellent video Paul. We were on WSR today and it was hot! I bet WSR will be getting some more visitors due to your high quality and professional videos. As Diana said Admiralscorner is definitely worth a look at - he's called Mike Dan. He and his lovely wife Val are often seen on WSR. Quite the celebrities! Some great videos on there. If cooler, I will alight at Crowcombe Heathfield next time, and combine it with a Quantock Hills walk. @@westcountrywanderings Fantastic! Would be great if you had a look around the castle at Dunster - get Louise along too. We love her channel too. Would be lovely to see you both do Dunster in the summer rather than Dunster by candlelight! There's also a beautiful garden near the castle called The Dream Garden. It's full of dahlias which were Lady Alice's favourite flower. Keep the WSR series coming - you so do it justice. Xx
Looks like a warm day. The last time I visited the WSR was late April this year. ua-cam.com/video/nZqBxAhp7XE/v-deo.html It was a foggy start to the day, and I started at Williton then. It stayed a bit misty all through the day - not possible to see across the channel, nor even as far as Hinkley Point from Watchet.
I must admit a prefer a bit of mist and cooler conditions to heat - summer is my least favouite season. It is a shame many of the heritage lines aren't open in the winter months (apart from santa specials) - I would enjoy it far more then. Thanks for the link! I see the great man Admiral (Mike) gave you a comment too! Take care, Paul.
@@westcountrywanderings Many of them have a quiet period in the Winter - during which they often do a lot of maintenance work, so quiet to the general public. The Gloucestershire Warwickshire one usually runs between Xmas and 1st January; choose a suitable weather day. In 2020 I went there on 1/1/2020, which had the bonus of the road traffic being light.

I love the Quantock Hills nearby too, and hope to go back in the autumn to film another walk there.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Take care,
Paul
@@westcountrywanderings i loved the sound of the steam engine's echoing through the valley when we stayed. Watchet is a lovely place, we also went on the Witherslack Hall 6990 into Minehead, Great day out!
@@Somersetmanwalking Yes, the WSR is a wonderful day out!
Let us know next time you are down - it would be great to say hello in person. Very Best Wishes Sam and Jeremy. 👍👍
Hi Sam & Jeremy,
Thank you for that lovely comment.
Yes, I have seen a few of 'The Admiral's Corner' channel before, which, I believe, is named after his and Val's house in or near Watchet. Some great videos on there.
If cooler, I will alight at Crowcombe Heathfield next time, and combine it with a Quantock Hills walk. If still hot (I am not a fan of the summer!), I will go to Dunster and its beach.
Thanks again!
Take care,
Paul
@@westcountrywanderings Fantastic! Would be great if you had a look around the castle at Dunster - get Louise along too. We love her channel too. Would be lovely to see you both do Dunster in the summer rather than Dunster by candlelight! There's also a beautiful garden near the castle called The Dream Garden. It's full of dahlias which were Lady Alice's favourite flower. Keep the WSR series coming - you so do it justice. Xx
@@samchant-summers5382 Thank you - we have a few joint videos planned for the future! I will be back on the WSR.
