- Hi everyone! In this video, I explore the quaint village of Baardskeerdersbos (known to the locals as 'B-bos' or 'B'bos', and translated as 'Beardshaversbush') in the Overberg district and Western Cape province of South Africa. It is situated around 180 kilometres from Cape Town and just over 20 kilometres from Gansbaai.
The video starts with me walking towards the village from the entrance on the 'Gansbaai' side. I give information about the name, farming in the area and the paved (or tarred) road that linked the village to other towns in the region in a profound way.
I mention about why this village is so special for me on a personal level, and give more information about the town and some notable people who sought opportunities elsewhere. I note how much development takes place in the village.
The next stop is the central business district or 'CBD' of the small village, which consists of the legendary B'Bos Winkel. This was the shop of the late Manie Groenewald, known for being the singer and guitarist of the Baardskeerdersbos Orkes. I also show footage of my earlier visit to Marietjie's Pub and Grill, including the huge breakfast I had. Next I show the information board of the village including the various streets and places of interest.
In the village itself, I visit the Dutch Reformed Church where I give a tour of the inside and outside, as well as Forage, an art gallery and coffee shop. I then walk towards the area in the village where the garden used to be, and give more information about the origin of B'bos. I also talk about the significance of water and stroll in various parts of the village to get an idea of how people live. In the final parts of the vlog, I visit the old school which is now a pub and restaurant called Ou Skool, and give a tour of my accommodation.
Throughout the vlog, I also share stories of the village and how people lived in the past. It is memories such as these that really summarise the heart and soul of Baardskeerdersbos.
