All About Stag Horn - Is this the most traditional material for buttons and kilt Pins?

We also offer the option of REAL stag horn for custom items. But why would you want them? Stag horn is technically antler from Scottish red deer - it is harvested in the fall after the rut. What makes these natural items popular for embellishing kilt outfits?

Spring for the bling! They had cylindrical saws all the way back to the 1500s. No Problem to make that button.

The composition of an antler is not the same throughout, the exterior portion is harder and more durable - if you cut straight through an antler, especially in thicker areas the "marrow" is more friable and more likely to degrade over time. As that is where the holes to secure the button would be, I would think not ideal to use as a button long-term and still retain it's function. If you look up antler "splits" for dogs you can see what that interior looks like - a bit spongey.

Drill presses were invented in late 19th century. I imagine circular bits were invented shortly afterward if not before
