Go Big!!!
Great work people. Getting children outdoors for any sport is a huge achievement. When we do our trips into Africa, we get adults asking us how to make fire. It's time we all unplugged and got connected with nature!
They can't find similar community and support by playing soccer or skateboarding? Both sports are much less expensive to participate in and don't require traveling to a crag.
Climbing or bouldering is pretty much free once you get some shoes and a harness (not unlike any other sport) Just get out there an do something you like, is the message here.
Dave Hause why don't you stay home and sit on the couch? Much safer there! Seriously though - just because they're poor favela kids doesn't mean they all want to play soccer or skate (which is close to impossible in the favelas anyway).
these kids play soccer, some of them surf, a couple of them are enrolled in martial arts. I think you're missing the point a little. Climbing provides them with just one more tool to broaden their horizons, and a fairly unique one at that since, not only does it teach them how to use a resource - the cliffs - that have traditionally simply walled their communities in, it also teaches them a lot about trust, fear and reliance on each other. These lessons are not unique to climbing but they are prominent and skills worth having. As far as access is concerned. These rocks are WAY closer to most of the students houses than soccer fields or skateable streets. I hope this answers some of your questions.

Many crags and boulder areas are located inside Rio and in walking distance from these neighborhoods (Favelas)

There is more than one sport in the world. I love rock climbing but it isn't the end all, be all.
