One of the favorite things my coach taught me. It's like bullying your opponent with the jab. One of the ways I kinda think about it is putting "intent" behind the jab, instead of just snapping it back into place immediately.
Why are we still caring about what style this is from or that comes from? Does it work? is it practical? Does it suit you? Do you like it? Practical technical and those that you love. Styles can stick it. Love the video and the share. Thank you.
This is actually like the best video ever. The lubed jab is awesome, and I've had a similar thought with that vertical fist jab adding a little distance/power but I've noticed it with just normal punches ending in a bit of a wrist curl using the forearm muscles in the same way.
So glad you did the jab video, it feels at times the jab is slept on. 3:28 I use that same stiff lunging jab and it’s Really helpful when you’re the shorter fighter in the room. It definitely a irritating shot to your opponent. Oh and I’ll play the Kung Fu nerd lol! Yup the vertical fist with top two knuckle contact point(Chun chuie)is a WC punch some lineages use. I like how you’re applying it to your boxing...effectively.
I didn't think you were literal about lubing up that big stiff jab... that's a delightfully sneaky one. Very creative too! [Edit: also, I'd be curious to see how you differentiate snapping and flicking (@~ 3:40). It looks quite similar to my novice eyes.]
look up bruce lee's diagrams from his unfinished Tao of JKD book. Or if you search for Ninja Nate's JDK channel, he'll talk about a flick punch and a snap punch. In JKD and Wing Chung it's so exagerated that I worry about breaking bones in my hand, so I wouldn't suggest doing it to that extreme. It's basically about the way your seratus and elbow snap out the trajectory of your fist at the very end. It's better to really look at the punches in a video than reading it (I feel like I already messed up in trying to write it out), because talking about snapping your elbow and shoulder or flicking your knuckles could lead to injury if you don't do it right. Icy mike is right that those little micro movements at the end make the punches feel a little more different if you're throwing them with power.
I’ve seen Floyd throw the vertical jab like that in his earlier days when he was “pretty boy”. He would throw multiple jabs and slip that in and I’ve gotta say it’s super effective! I watched this video a month ago and tried it when I sparred, it definitely works💪🏼
6:55 is like a jkd jab, except we snap the bottom knuckles upwards instead of top down. In boxing gloves, snapping down definitely gives you that extra range, I like it! With no gloves, i think it might be pretty hard on the wrist, and makes it harder to get under an opponents jaw so it is maybe more dangerous for bare fist but works great in the gloves!
Mike as a beginner I really love your channel because everything that I’ve been told not to do has the right application at some point in time. Most old-school boxing trainers will say Everything you are doing is wrong. Instead of adding to the toolbox and saying hey try it like this or this is another way you could do it they just say wrong wrong wrong there’s only one way to do it and this is the way to do it and then you go to another coach and they say wrong wrong wrong there’s only one way to do it and this is the way to do it thank you for adding to my toolbox and making my arsenal stronger!

Mike: "Cliff do a sponsored spot with me" Also Mike: "This video is brought to you by erectile disfunction, we'll be showing you how to properly lube up your jab, make it stiffer, and get better penetration"
I was told to think of an attack like a ball on a chain The power is in the body (pushing in with the hips)not the arm/leg But that doesn’t mean you don’t need any arm/leg strength and power at all Which most people think when they’re told not to use their arm/leg (Learning how to dance has helped me so much with the hip thing)
Thing about the sweet science is that there’s nothing sweet about receiving a combination of inhumane strikes to the face from someone who punches 1000 times a day all year ... I love boxing btw just being honest lol
To give a small amount of extra distance and a little more power on your jab you can pivot on the ball of your front foot and extend your shoulder forward, almost popping your shoulder into the punch. I don't know if I explained that well but hopefully it makes sense
Cool vid. Ive been planning on doing a video about just jabs. I personally like vertical jabs, cuz they can be quicker, and they can slide through guards as you've shown. Also, and you can do that vertical jab with the top or bottom knuckles. But you gotta extend those knuckles forward, just like you showed for the top knuckles and thumb, do the same with the bottom knuckles. It essentially works like the 1" punch, but actual jabs.
Mannnn now this is HELPFUL. What i wanna see your take on is how should shorter and smaller dudes fight? I know me, a 5'6 guy, is never taking a 6' 200 pound guy, but maybe i could take a tall lean guy? So like what's your advice for smaller dudes to learn or focus on?
These are 💯% valid. That's how they taught straight punches in Bare knuckle Boxing back before gloves. The wrist snap too, Joe Louis used it if you watch his Highlights. If a push kick works why wouldn't a push punch? It's like teeping with your fists and the pushing keeps your hands from shattering.
The push punch is 1/3 of a real punch. You just broke it down in a step of in correctness, but still realitvly needed and useable. I've learned this way back in 03. Glad to see the art evolving in the U.S.
I agree with Cliff on throwing a stiffer jab with substantially more force. I'll just concentrate on using my arm muscles to propel my fist at my opponent as fast and with as much power as possible.
I know this has been out for 2 months but there is another "spicy way" to throw a jab that I'm curious what you think of. Basically when you are throwing jabs, while the arm is extended, you turn your hip and you extend your shoulder with it (you turn your shoulder more, bringing it forward as well), extending its reach. PS be careful with punches that overextend your arm (eg the one at 6:53), it can hurt you, like my elbows are clicking because of overextending my arms with my punches and now sometimes they even get "stuck" (cant extend them without making them click and it usually hurts) when doing pushups. I hope I wasn't pretentious, I just want to be part of the community and maybe get your opinion.
That lube up technique I've seen before. A dude at a amature boxing match I've seen a few times did it. He did it differently tho! He would quickly whip his forehead sweat but doing it in a uppercut way (normal no that vertical way you did the jab) and he would really get in that upper cut shot. He would also do that with his jab to his opponents eyes and yeah the jab would hurt but sometimes his sweat would get in there eye and moving to the left was much easier for that dude
So...I will be the kung fu guy, the vertical fist is seen in a lot of kung fu systems. But what isn't talked about often is the wrist extension. I only know two people(now 3) who mentioned that. That extension reinforces the arm, similar to the turning over the shoulder. Anyway, great vid. The 2nd way, ya BOI sets up the stiff jab is similar to the riddick boxing smash punch. You can set it up similar to throwing a lead shovel hook or uppercut. Thanks again mike!
@hard2kurt yeah with the vertical punch, what they do is use the bottom 3 knuckles , keeping the fist basically level(like you're holding a hot mug of coffee, trying to keep the liquid level) while the arm extends outwards, towards the end of the extension your fist naturally scoops upwards, with the 3 knuckles on impact. Your way of doing it seems a lot more comfortable, your way will be safer to do bare knuckle too with those top 2 knuckles. That little bit extra definitely translates into more power if it lands properly, critical hit chance +1.5% ... I'm a nerd. I dig it.
That thing with your wrist at the end of your stiff Jabb is totally Kung Fu. We call it turning the wrist towards the point of impact. Never seen it in boxinggloves though. Totally gonna try that next sparring session
thats crazy actually when i did JKD uses the wing chun method of cranking the vertical fist upward and driving your bottom 2 knuckles for some reason. your way is way more efficient when i tried it.

Though we don't lock the elbow and the school I came from the first is held in a 45 degree angle vs. vertical. It's all about structure power.
